World-renowned furniture and home accessories designer, thespian, and woman activist, Laurie Boquiren speaks against Female Ge***al Mutiliation (FGM).

“An estimated 200 million women and girls have undergone female ge***al mutilation in 31 countries, according to the United Nations. This can have serious and long-lasting physical, psychological, and social consequences for those who undergo it.

In the Philippines, female ge***al mutilation is practiced in some communities particularly among certain indigenous groups. While illegal it still persists. We need to raise more efforts aimed to raise awareness about the rights of women and girls and work towards the abandonment of FGM within affected communities.

End violence now.”

Zonta Club of Cebu II holds WOMANDAUE painting competition 2023 exhibit

To highlight the contribution of women to the development of Mandaue City, the Zonta Club of Cebu II holds a 10-day exhibit of some of the entries of the WOMANDAUE painting competition.

“Today marks a significant occasion. We come together not only to celebrate the painting competition with the theme ‘A Landscape of Women Who Move Mandaue,” said Dr. Elsa Basubas, chair of the Abay Sa Kahayag Committee of Zonta Club of Cebu II. “This theme encapsulates the essence of recognizing and honoring the invaluable contribution of women to the cultural, historical, and societal richness of our beloved community.”

Dr. Basubas, speaking during the exhibit's launch on Friday, December 8, 2023, highlighted how women, through their resilience, creativity, and unwavering spirit, have woven themselves into the very fabric of Mandaue. They have enriched the community with diverse stories, traditions, and experiences.

Atty. Regal M. Oliva, Zonta Club of Cebu II Internal Vice President, emphasized the club's commitment to turning this theme into a visual reality through the medium of visual arts.

“Women play a vital role in the formation and movement in the development of Mandaue city and we give tribute to them. Without women, nothing would have moved; there’s no movement, no oil to move the engine of Mandaue City. Even in our council, almost half of the positions are women,” Atty. Oliva said.

This initiative is part of the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women, spanning from November 25, 2023, to December 12, 2023. The competition awarded P100,000 for the first prize, P50,000 for the second prize, and P25,000 for the third. Jerson Calo's "Empowering WoMandaue" secured the first prize, followed by Rolando Yakit's "Tigluto ug Lamiang Bibingka sa Mandaue" in second place, and Aedam Javier’s "Panahi ug Trapo" claiming the third prize.

The seven finalists were each awarded P10,000. These include "WoMantawi Climbs To the Top" by Roxanne Normandia; "The Heroines of Mandaue City" by Genevieve Carumba; "Bingka sa Mandaue Vendor" by Virgilio Ybanez; "Subtle Influence: A Delightful Legacy" by Ruena Fat; "The Silent but Powerful Force behind Mandaue City" by Lordzell Perez; "Unity through Women's Organization to End Violence Against Women and Children" by Alfredo Bitoon Jr.; and "Kababayen-an: Suga sa Pinuy-anan, Dan-ag sa Dakbayan" by Wilfredo Canete Jr.

Ms. Karla Victoria Cortez, Mandaue City public information officer who represented Mayor Jonas Cortes, noted the importance of the activity.

“Today’s gathering not only celebrates past successes but also serves as a reminder that gender-based violence still threatens us. Surrounded by paintings depicting our ongoing fight, we acknowledge that violence against women of all ages persists. So today, and every day, let’s tap into the core of our activism, recognizing that the power to end violence lies within each of us,” Ms. Cortez said.

“Our collective commitment has led to the success we achieved. Rooted and upheld in the intrinsic worth of our womanhood. We define it ourselves, not allowing others to dictate our narrative,” she added.

Mandaue City Councilor Cynthia Remedio noted that the city under the leadership of Mayor Cortez, with the Zonta Club of Cebu II through its Abay sa Kahayag program, continues to work together for a peaceful, resilient, and violence-free Mandaue.

“May these artworks serve as a reminder that each brush’s stroke carries a message of resilience, empowerment, and a collective goal to end violence against women,” said Zn. Marietta P. Malinao in her closing remarks.

Maristela Rallos, who helped organize the painting competition, said over 100 artists joined the competition. The basis for judging includes creativity, relevance to the theme, and impact, among others, she said.

The competition was open to everyone and the artists who joined included senior high school student and even professional artists. The paintings were identified only through numbers.

The board of judges includes Maris Holopainen, owner of Qube Gallery; Prof. Javy Villacin, a UP Cebu Fine Arts faculty member; Allen Arvin Tan, fair director of Tubo Cebu Art Fair; Edwin Ao, fashion designer and faculty member of CITU College of Arts, Sciences and Education; and Ms. Maia Franco, external vice president of the Arts Council of Cebu Foundation Inc.

Zonta Club Cebu II’s Teen Summit promotes transformative leadership, gender equality

Students can be a potent force in the campaign to end violence against women and children in schools and the promotion of gender equality through positive youth action.

This was the objective of the Teen Summit, organized by Zonta Club of Cebu II in partnership with Z Club of Childlink High School Cebu and MOVE Mandaue, held on the first day of the commemoration of the 18 Days of Activism for the Elimination of Violence Against Women . DepEd Ecotech Center was the venue, of the one-day session, that comfortably accommodated 100 student participants from Mandaue City Science High School, Mandaue City School for the Arts, St. Theresa’s College, Our Lady of Joy Learning Center and the host school. on November 25, 2023. Accompanying teachers from participating schools were visibly seated among the well-behaved, cooperative, very bright high school students.

The inspirational message by Dr. Salustiano Jimenez, DepEd Regional Director, Region 7, underscored hard work, dedication and commitment, as necessary elements of success. He hopes that he is able to inspire others by his teachings, with a quote, “I will aspire to inspire before I expire”.

According to Childlink director Zn. Ma. Teresa Tio, an activity, such as a teen summit, necessarily brings out leadership, team-building, problem-solving skills, creativity and open-mindedness. Such goals are in consonance to the aims of Z Club, namely,
character building, leadership, and lending a helping hand to others.

The speaker on “Transformative Leadership”, a professor at Cebu Normal University, Ms. Janet Mananay, expounded on the elements of Inspirational Leadership, with the acronym
V-I-C-E. Visionary (clear direction of the future), Inspiring (optimistic, inspired daily), Considerate (caring, concerned), Ethical (has integrity, promotes trust).

Dr. Rhodora Bucoy, former Chairperson of the Philippine Commission on Women, discussed “Transforming Gender Inequalities, Changing Lives: Towards a Gender-fair, Violence-free Inclusive Society.”

“Gender transformative education unlocks the potential of learners in all diversity, contributes to ending harmful gender norms, attitudes, and practices, and transforms institutions to achieve a just, equal, and inclusive society”, she added.

That inequality in the home, in the community, and institutions exist should be recognized, and must be addressed, she said.

Dr. Bucoy then cited the need for transformative thinking and achieving critical consciousness to recognize the truth in society.

“Use your talents and idealism to help change misogynist norms and promote values founded on respect for human rights, respect for diversity, inclusivity, and democracy,” she said. It is time to realize and translate into action the legal imperatives aimed at ending discrimination and men’s violence against women and girls, Dr. Bucoy said.

“Be part of the challenge to rebuild a more equal and inclusive world “where no one is left behind,” she added.

The workshop output demonstrated the beginning transformation of the young leaders, as conduits of change towards gender equality, as seen through their composed song, original dance, poem composition, and paintings.

A job well done Z Club of Childlink High School, Move Mandaue, and Zonta Club Cebu II.

Art is a powerful catalyst got change, and women around the world have harnessed its transformative potential to amplify their voices as activists. Through painting, poetry, music, and more, women have painted portraits of resilience, sung anthems of empowerment, and sculpted narratives of equality. Women in ARTivism isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s a bold declaration of rights, a mirror reflecting the strength and spirit of women. It transcends borders, cultures, and languages, inspiring movements and shaping societies. Support women using art as a force for change. Untile the violence stops, our expressions continue.

IMEE: COLLATERAL DAMAGE RISK RISING FOR FILIPINO SEAFARERS

Senator Imee Marcos pressed the Department of Foreign Affairs and Department of Migrant Workers for a long-term strategy to negotiate the release of abducted Filipino seafarers as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict expands beyond the Gaza Strip.

Filipino seafarers were again among the hostages in Sunday's hijacking incident in the Middle East, just a week after Yemen's Houthi rebels seized an Israeli-linked cargo ship.

Marcos, who chairs the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, said the lives of Filipino seafarers now face higher risks as Israel's attacks in Gaza could draw in more militant groups seeking to avenge the deaths of thousands of Palestinians.

“There's no end in sight to this conflict and more Filipino seafarers could become collateral damage. The ongoing truce to release hostages on both sides is temporary," the senator explained.

She also warned that the pro-Palestinian Houthi rebels have threatened to target more ships with links to Israel.

Filipino seafarers comprise 25% of those employed in the global maritime industry, with almost half a millon serving on cargo and cruise ships.

The sea hijackings took place in the Red Sea and the adjoining Gulf of Aden - a crucial shipping route connecting Europe with the Middle East and Asia.

Marcos also urged the DFA to take great care in its diplomatic positions, especially as a member of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The Philippines' abstention from a UNGA resolution calling for a humanitarian pause in Israel's attacks in Gaza "has not gone unnoticed" among Arab nations and could affect future negotiations on the release of Filipino hostages, she said.

"Our alliance with the United States and its foreign policies in the ongoing conflict complicate our own. But Filipino interests come first and must be upheld," the senator emphasized.

Women ARTvism highlights concerns, issues

Zonta Club of Cebu II shares women’s universal stance on various gender issues through different types of stage arts to commemorate the 18 Days of Activism against gender-based violence.

Women ARTivism (Art+Activism) is described as an artistic uprising - a celebration of the beauty and strength of empowered women through a mix of art and activism. The entire production was adopted by Abay sa Kahayag committee of Zonta Cebu II, as a major activity in the calendar of the 18 Days. The stage was the lawn in Oakridge Garden Plaza, at sunset, on November 26, 2023.

Zn. Sarah Mae Enclona-Henderson, chair of Women ARTivism 2023, explained that the production uses the power of performing arts to convey messages about the advocacies. The performances could be. a song, a dance, a poem or a monologue, which I can amplify the voices of women.

“The performing arts can call for transformational changes among the audience”,
Ms. Enclona-Henderson said.

We’d like those attending (the Women o ARTivism) to pick out the different advocacies that we have,” she added. “Women who want to share their advocacies need not go to the streets. They can use their art to send a message.”

The concerns include climate change, women empowerment, gender-based violence, and life as an activist, among others,

There were three monologues – Ang Rebolusyon Nagpuyo sa Akong Lawas by Riza Binarao, Ami Lavadia and Richel Ann Basiga, Woman by Sheng Pestaňo Gemperoa, and Movie Stars by Charlene Virlouvet. Ms. Virlouvet explained that Movie Stars highlights the effects of climate change.

Zn. Chona Tremedal & Zn. Marilou Cañizares, Zn Flor Miel, Zn Mildred Simolde, Zn Hazel Espina, and Zn Betty Veloso performed Say Her Name A Tribute to Female Performing Artists who Fought for Women’s Rights. The 2TinCans Theatre Company did a dramatic reading of Trafficking.

Apple Abarquez performed the Fight Song while Mikee Amagsila, Richel Basiga, and Davelyn Cuenco delivered two songs, Stand Up For Love and the Strong Women Anthem – Power/Born This Way/Edge of Glory mashup.

The audience also witnessed a short play, "Mga Misteryo sa Kinabuhi ni Maria” while the University of the Philippines Sayaw Evolution performed Babayeng Mag-uuma, Pangunahing Pwersa, a contemporary dance revolution against land industrialization and militarization.

Zn Enclona-Henderson explained that the human trafficking piece is based on real-life stories from interviews of trafficking survivors in Cebu.

The goal is that through the different stage art forms, the message pierces the hearts, and that the emotions of the audience start flowing to create empathy and commitment to help STOP THE VIOLENCE!!

Zonta Club of Cebu II launches 18 Days of Activism vs VAWC at Women’s Summit

The campaign to end violence against women and children (VAWC) in Mandaue City continues through the joint efforts of the Mandaue City government, the Zonta Club of Cebu II, and other concerned sectors.

The Women’s Summit organized by the Zonta Club of Cebu II, in cooperation with MOVE Mandaue, and the Citizens Lady Lawyers Association Inc. (CELLA), highlighted the various concerns on the efforts to stop VAWC. The launching of the 18 Days of Activism for the elimination of VAWC was also held during the summit.

Ms. Michelle Yu, Mandaue City gender and development (GAD) focal person, discussed the city’s efforts in addressing gender-based violence. According to Ms. Yu, the Mandaue City Council had approved several milestone legislation on GAD from 2003 to 2023. These include the Safe Spaces Ordinance, Revised Gender and Development Code of Mandaue City, and amendment to the Solo Parent Welfare Ordinance creating the Solo Parent and their Children Task Force, among others.

The other city projects in relation to GAD include the replacement of sodium lamps with LED streetlights as a deterrence of violence against women.

Lawyer Noemi Truya of the Children’s Legal Bureau shared her efforts in the fight to stop abuse among women and children.

Dr. Rhodora Bucoy, former chairwoman of the Philippine Commission on Women, discussed her experience as head of the commission. Under her leadership, the Philippines was recognized as top 10 in mainstreaming work in the world and Asia from 2008 to 2016. However, the country slid to the top 20 in recent years partly due to other countries stepping up their GAD efforts.

Ms. Tisha Ylaya, lead convenor of Cebu Pride, then discussed the learnings beyond Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression of the LGBTQI. Ms. Ylaya noted the discrimination suffered by the LGBTQI. She noted that a survey on the plight of LGBTQI found several pressing issues they face. These include financial insecurity, the absence of affordable housing, the impacts of COVID-19, and the absence of someone taking care of them.

Atty May S. Aguilar of the Cavada Law office discussed Back to Basics: A Woman's Perspective on VAWC cases.

Republic Act 9262 or the Anti Violence Against Women and Children Act approved in March 2004 includes various acts such as physical, sexual, psychological, and emotional violence, according to Atty Aguilar.

She noted that a study published by BBC in 2020 found that 90 percent of people all over the world have a bias against women. According to a gender study covering 75 countries, 50 percent of men think they have more rights to jobs than women.

One-third of men also thinks it’s acceptable to hit your partner while 50 percent of men and women think that men make better political leaders. Also, 40 percent of the world population think men make better business executives and women are less likely to be in senior executive positions. Even women also have a bias against women, Atty Aguilar pointed out.

She then urged women to stand up against abuses of their partners. “A man can hit their partner but women can remain stronger against abuses.

Lawyers Fiona Bojos and Magdalena Lepiten focused on the topic of Safe Spaces while Ms. Charlene Virlouvet her journey and her involvement in addressing gender-based violence. On the other hand, Ms. Rain Villagonzalo stressed that transgender women are women.

Zn. Dr. Elsa Basubas, chairperson of Abag sa Kahayag, said the collective efforts of Zonta Club of Cebu II, the Mandaue City government, and non-government groups like CELLA have resulted in improvement in the efforts to end VAWC.

Dr. Basubas noted that based on the report of Ms. Yu the VAWC cases in Mandaue City have gone down. She added that their advocacy to promote awareness of abuses against women and children may have contributed to the decline in VAWC cases.

The other activities during the 18 Days of Activism for the Elimination of VAWC are Women in Artvism on November 26, Roll on Reels to be posted on Zonta Club Cebu II’s page, the Awarding ceremony for Women who moved Mandaue and the Painting Exhibit Competition opening, and Zonta Club Cebu II gift-giving during the jail visit to the Mandaue City jail dorm.

Take a break at Virginia Foods’ District V Café

If you happen to be in the northeastern town of Compostela, Cebu, take the chance to visit the District V Café, another innovative endeavor of Virginia Foods Inc. (VFI).

Located at the VFI Manufacturing Plant, Guimbal Road, Compostela, District V Café is a harmonious blend of tranquility and convenience. It provides the perfect retreat for those yearning to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

Step into the world of District V Café, a recently unveiled haven that beckons with an enticing array of hot and iced coffee beverages, frappes, and blended drinks. But that's not all—this hidden gem in the northern part of Cebu goes beyond the usual café offerings, boasting a delectable selection of rice meals, snacks, and desserts.

“The main vision (in opening the café) is to become a premier place where people can meet with their friends and colleagues. At the same time, the objective of this café is to showcase the Virginia products that we have,” said Hazel Tanya D. Jumawan, manager for VFI business operations and development.

From the tempting Beef Bulgogi Skillet to the savory Bacon Waffle, the flavorful Vinta Spaghetti to the zesty Saucy Hungarian, District V Café offers culinary delights at pocket-friendly prices.

Jumawan explained that the letter V of the café’s name is derived from Virginia as well as its location, which is the fifth district.

Stanley L. Go, VFI vice president for sales and marketing, said the café is another innovation for VFI.

Go explained that the café will showcase the unlimited possibilities of what can be done with Virginia products. He noted that VFI’s simple products being prepared for breakfast like the hotdog, bacon, sausages, and bulgogi can be transformed into something creative and beautiful.

VFI did not anticipate a very positive response to the café when it opened. So, the café staff had to work double time to serve the customers who were willing to wait in the long. lines for their order to be served.

While they see that District V Café has bright market potential, Go explained that the team handling this endeavor still has to learn how to perfect the system before they can think of opening branches or offering franchises.

To make visiting the café more attractive, Jumawan said they are looking at offering monthly specials.

Go added that VFI will be offering District V Café customers a taste of the new products being developed by the company’s research and development team, such as the liver pâté which they plan to be exclusively available at the café.

So, if you're craving a break from the mundane and a tantalizing journey through Virginia's culinary delights, make your way to District V Café. Immerse yourself in the rich flavors of both coffee and non-coffee beverages, paired with mouthwatering Virginia dishes. It's not just a café; it's a celebration of culinary innovation and cherished traditions.
