As many of you know, I have travelled solo for a few years now, going to countries like Guatemala, El Salvador, Mexico, Canada and more. Many of these countries have "bad press" and are seen to be "too dangerous" to travel alone, especially as a female.

Well I have started a new series on IG, where I speak to other solo travellers and find out how they have been staying safe while they explore the world solo. We talk first experiences, safety tips and travel stories.

I remember the first time I realised that a lot of men really have no clue at how unsafe women feel at night. One night I was walking home with a guy I was seeing at the time. He wanted me to come to his and I just wanted to go home. Anyway, we had a small argument about it and I ended up walking home by myself. I put one headphone in and put my music on quietly, so I was listening to something but I could hear what was around me (as I'm sure most females do). I had my key in my hand so that I could get into my place quickly. As I was walking, I heard someone call my name but I couldn't see them. So I carried on walking, just a little bit faster. I could feel someone behind me. All of a sudden I felt hands on my shoulders. I screamed. I have never screamed so loudly. So many things went through my head at that moment. I turned around and it was the guy I was seeing at the time. He came after me because he felt bad about our fight and wanted to surprise me. Instead he was surprised by how frightened I was. He didn't understand why I was so scared and he asked me "I called out my name and I was just with you, why wouldn't you know its me?" And that was the moment I realised, he has never walked home scared that is was too dark or that someone was behind him or that if someone was to grab him suddenly that they probably would hurt him.
All males out there please talk to the females in your life, find out what it is like for them. Learn. Educate yourself. Make this world safer.
