Thanks for listening! That's a wrap on Season 3!
Did you have a chance to listen to the full season? Did you have a favorite episode??
Even though Dr. Mike is referring to the chair of his dissertation committee that he had to work very closely with, I love this quote because it can be applied to so many different situations.
Not everything has to be perfect all of the time, but there has to be a mutual level of respect in any relationship, and you have to be willing to put in the work!
He does continue that he had a great working relationship with her, and they would still take a few minutes during each phone call for âgossipâ! Itâs important to infuse some fun into the serious!

Nicole raises such an important point: When we think of university employees, we often think mostly of the professors - the faculty, and we forget how much the administration plays an integral role in the college students experience.
I also loved her point of college being that middle ground between living at home and moving out on your own, but we know that isn't true for everyone.
This semester I have several students in both of my classes that are non-traditional, returning back to their undergraduate studies after spending decades in the work force. I have appreciated the diverse perspectives that they all bring!

Leaders need to be mindful with understanding the impact that their decisions will make, not just in the immediate but as well as long term.
Being mindful of the impact that their decisions make is a powerful and important tool, and leaders must possess that awareness and understanding.
This quote really hit me when James said it during our recording. It's true that trust has to be earned and it's not automatic.
And if you think about it, he's right that if you have built trust with a leader over time, that if they slip up, it could be viewed as a small withdrawal from "the bank of trust".
Another excellent example of how we should continue to humanize leadership roles, continuing to be empathetic towards one another.

Donât be late to class!
In this episode, Sarah talks about how she had a different approach than her fellow design school classmates. She wasn't interested in pulling all nighters, and she wasn't interested in working insane hours for a New York firm after college.
She continues that she was working in branding but the best part about her month was when she hosted Wellstruck Round Tables.
Sarah had found her "zone of genius" and built a business that would bring her and others joy.

Liz has strategically put together a team of contractors located throughout the country. In this episode, I ask her if her role working with her clients is more leadership or team based.
The conversation evolved to talk about her team, and I thought she brought up an excellent point.
That her team works with her and not for her, because being a leader also means being part of a team.

I recorded this wrap up in January, the week I started teaching at Temple.
"This week I started teaching Team Processes and Leadership in Organizations within the Education Department at Temple University. I always thought if I went back into teaching, it would be the hospitality sector, but the universe had another plan for me."
It SURE did. I kicked off 2022 open to new possibilities. As you'll learn in Season 3, Spring semester went VERY well!
With the start of Fall semester this week, I'm excited to be teaching the same two classes, but also TAKING my first PhD level course "Intro to Qualitative Research". While I haven't applied to the PhD program yet (applications won't open for another month or so), this is the perfect way to dip my toe back into the world of research (and being a student again!).
This is SUCH a great lesson! I will absolutely be sharing this reminder with my students this semester!!
At the end of this incredible episode with Olivia, she explains that she had to realize that she wasn't failing in her early 20s, but that she was growing.
She had to learn that she wasn't failing herself, she wasn't failing the people she worked for, and that "The best thing you can do for yourself is recognize that itâs not failure, itâs growth and thatâs a huge step in my life."
Listen to Olivia's full story in this episode, featuring her experience hiking the Appalachian Trail last year. Talk about growth!!
Bringing it full circle before kicking off Season 3!
Connor was one of my favorite student leaders to work with while I was in grad school at Temple, and he shares in this episode that he went to Temple for education with a dual degree in secondary education and social studies. He got his certification....
And now he takes his clothes off for money! (See more details on that below)
He continues that everything he learned from his educational career he's been able to apply to his day job, his night life job and how he deal with people.
Connor said "The education department at Temple, I canât praise highly enough. Itâs such a well rounded curriculum that you can learn so much and take it all to any career. Temple is a huge part of me becoming who I am."
Based on the classes I'm teaching, I can absolutely understand that!
As for Connor taking his clothes off for money, get the full story in this episode about the creation of "Bearlesque" (now called CaBEARet) which was the next piece of the puzzle that helped Connor create a more complete image of himself.
And check out CaBEARet live - 2nd Friday of the Month at TABU! Follow Connor on IG for updates about all of his performances!
Not everyone gets the chance to have an exit interview when they are leaving a job. But in this episode, Will admits that he should have been more honest and transparent about why he was leaving a previous job. They had asked him to manage two restaurants, and it became too much. Hello burnout, it's me Will!
Of all of the jobs that I have held over the last 15 years, I have always been very clear about why I was leaving and what changes I would make based on my lived experiences working for that company.
Even though I knew my feedback would not likely change anything, since most of these places were "the way it's always been done" kind of establishments, it felt great to share my truth in a professional and non-bridge burning manner.
Maybe there's a good lesson in here for my leadership class!
P.S. It's been about a year since recording this episode with Will, and he's still crushing it at Emmy Squared!
James and I have a mutual appreciation for empathy.
SPOLIER ALERT - Empathy shows up A LOT in Season 3 of Beyond the Venue Podcast. New episodes start Friday, Sept 2nd, 2022!! You'll recognize some guests from Seasons 1 & 2, including James!
In this episode, James refers to a questionnaire that asks how you would respond to certain situations when everything is great vs when everything is falling apart.
Through James's role working with small business owners (like me!), he's able to gain more insight to the ups, downs, challenges and successes that we go through. Especially over these last few years!
I thought he posed an excellent question "When things are out of your control, how are you going to behave?" I think it all depends on your level of Emotional Intelligence, and to learn more about that, you'll want to tune into Season 3!!
In this episode you get to hear two perspectives - one from Grace, a student in Drexelâs Food and Hospitality Management Department who was a freshman in the Spring of 2020 when the lockdown began and one from Paul, one of Graceâs professors in the department and a long time friend and colleague of mine.
The statement that "there's going to be pushback" refers to how the hospitality industry has had to shift over these last few years. Inflation, supply chain and staffing issues have caused a shake up.
But the "silver lining" for Paul's students is that they get to be on the ground floor of something that no other generation has experienced. These issues are forcing a shift in the industry and for many, it's a very positive shift.

We recorded this episode almost a year ago, when Ben was gearing up to start the Fall semester. He's an associate professor in the College of Education and Human Development, and when I asked what he would be teaching that semester, he told me he would be teaching "Interpersonal Communications" for the first time. In this episode, Ben explains that we donât know each others stories and thatâs how heâs approaching this class - How to tell other people our stories and have them tell theirs. "When we donât know things, our brain fills in the gaps which comes from knowledge that we have or donât have". He said they would be "doing a lot of talking in this class, and understanding peopleâs body language". And thanks to Ben, I had the pleasure of returning to Temple as an adjunct professor this past Spring (returning for Fall 2022 in less than a month!). I would have several students in my classes that took Ben's Interpersonal Communications class, and they truly appreciated the class and Ben's style of teaching. Worlds will collide when I pair up Ben with some of his former students in Season 3 of Beyond the Venue Podcast!
Managing expectations (both your own and that of your clients) comes with time and experience, and Liz has had plenty of experience working with clients over the years. She explains in this episode that her mentees would enter into a business relationship with a client without a contract. That's something you don't ever want to do, because the contract is there to protect BOTH parties. Most importantly, the contract is your tool to establish boundaries. Liz goes into more details as to how she's had to learn along the way, and can in turn mentor others with everything she has learned!
I was far from the only one who had to get creative and navigate Beyond the Venue when everything fell apart in 2020. Season 1 was recorded in the Spring of 2021 to elevate stories from my friends in the hospitality and entertainment world whose careers and businesses were impacted by the pandemic. Listening to Season 1 was like stepping back in time, remembering what it was like before we were fully vaccinated, having zero clue what the rest of 2021 would look like. Season 2 features several of my colleagues from the hospitality and event industry, as well as teachers and professors from a variety of disciplines. I interview other podcast hosts, storytellers, bartenders, parents and everything in between!
Olivia had no shortage of advice from previous Through Hikers (people who have hiked the Appalachian Trail). She was lucky to have several friends in our circle who could provide advice, including our friend Julia who is also a petite female, just like Olivia. Olivia shares in this episode that part of her preparations were trips to REI, and she spoke with a Through Hiker who worked there. His advice - walk around in the rain and drive below the speed limit. Life is going to go at a completely slower pace when youâre walking for the next 6 months. The advice would pay off as Olivia and her tramily had some very rainy days in both hot and cold temperatures, as well as having to walk through water crossings. The Philly Chefâs Conference has been a major event for Drexelâs Food and Hospitality Management Department, gaining national and international recognition over the years. I had the privilege of being involved with the inaugural years, and it has been incredible to see how much the conference has grown both in size and reputation. Based on the nature of this event, it just made sense to not even attempt a virtual version which Paul explains more in this episode. Not only were people Zoomâd out, but the demos and tastings are an integral part of the conference. And Paul confesses that the tech would have just been too much (if you havenât seen the âIâm not a cat, Iâm a lawyerâ Zoom filter mishap, you have missed one of the funniest things to come out of these last few years!). As of right now, they are still planning on hosting the 2022 conference at the end of February 2022. Follow them at @phillychefconference for the most up to date details!
In this episode we learn about the work that Lauren and Kerri do for Bldg 39, a wedding and events venue here in Philly. Both as a wedding planner and venue coordinator, Lauren knows first hand how much the trends have changed. She says that our reality is that Covid is not going away, so people are either looking for outdoor venues or cutting their guest counts. And she explains how booking trends have changed. Itâs either, letâs do this right now or letâs book this for 2 years out. Couples are also faced with the realities of venues requiring proof of vaccination, which can either fall on the couple or the wedding planner to collect. I think this is going to be a new trend of online RSVPâs where in order to RSVP yes to a wedding, all guests in that party need to upload their vaccination card to the online form. Iâm curious to see how the next year progresses in terms of weddings and events, because we know the situation is constantly fluid.
One of the other classes that Ben is teaching this semester is one that he created. Itâs a class centered around examining race and class within rap and hip hop. I appreciate the way that he stated, kids can have their beliefs but they need to learn whether or not those beliefs are useful in creating community. His lesson plans include a discussion around the song âWAPâ, which he says should be an uncomfortable class for all of us, but should be good nonetheless. Ben further states âit makes white men uncomfortable, I can tell you that muchâ. Itâs an important lens into examining this culture shift, and who is saying what is bad and what is good, and having these crucial conversations with his class.
