LONG-TIME ELLIS COUNTY FUGITIVE CONVICTED OF 2012 MURDER

Ellis County and District Attorney Ann Montgomery announced today that long-time fugitive Jennifer Samantha Puente (30) of Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, pled guilty to Murder and Tampering/Fabricating Physical Evidence with Intent to Impair a Human Co**se for the 2012 offenses. She was sentenced to 40 years in prison for murder and 15 years for the tampering charge.
On March 17, 2012, a witness found the burning body of Moriah Gonzales (15) on the side of a road in Ennis, Texas. After investigation, the Ennis Police Department secured an arrest warrant for Puente for Gonzales’ murder. An Ellis County grand jury indicted both Puente and Joe Alvarado for the murder and tampering with Gonzales’ body. Puente, however, fled from Ellis County and could not be located. In 2014, Alvarado was convicted of Murder and Tampering/Fabricating Physical Evidence with Intent to Impair a Human Co**se for his role in Gonzales’ death. He is currently serving a thirty-four-year sentence in prison in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
In 2016, believing Puente was in Mexico, Ellis County prosecutors and the Texas Rangers began working with United States Department of Justice officials to request arrest warrants and extradition from Mexico. In October 2022, Mexican authorities located and arrested Puente in Mexico. Months later, Puente waived extradition to the United States. On February 10, 2023, a team consisting of members from the Texas Rangers, the Ennis Police Department, and the Ellis County and District Attorney’s Office returned Puente to Ellis County and booked her into the Ellis County Jail.
Murder is a first-degree felony punishable by between five and ninety-nine years or life in prison, and Tampering/Fabricating Physical Evidence with Intent to Impair a Human Co**se is a second-degree felony punishable by between two and twenty years in prison or probation. On July 2, 2024, Puente pled guilty to both charges and was sentenced by Judge Cindy Ermatinger of the 443rd Judicial District Court to 40 years in prison for the murder charge and 15 years in prison for the tampering charge. The sentences will run concurrently.
“Many former and current Ellis County prosecutors, investigators, Ennis police officers, Department of Justice officials, and Texas Department of Public Safety peace officers worked tirelessly to find and bring Puente back to Ellis County,” stated Montgomery. “I am proud that this case has concluded, and we could bring justice for Moriah and her family.”
Felony Chief James Zaleta and Assistant County and District Attorney Sherry Roeder handled the case for the County and District Attorney’s Office, assisted by Investigators Todd Woodruff and Dennis Morris. The police investigation was led by Detective Sergeant Paul Asby of the Ennis Police Department and Captain Jason Bobo of the Texas Rangers.

Ennis Capital Murderer Convicted and Sentenced to Life without Parole

Ellis County and District Attorney Ann Montgomery announced that Dontriel Alexae Perry, 24, of Ennis, Texas, was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole on June 23, 2023.

On December 4, 2020, at about 7:40 p.m., Caleb Clark, Rodney Dent, and a third man were seated in a parked car in front of their grandmother’s home in Ennis. A white SUV drove by, and the killers shot multiple rounds into the parked car. Caleb Clark and Rodney Dent were both killed—each man sustaining thirteen gunshot wounds. Hours before on the same day as the shooting, two witnesses observed Perry loading fi****ms with another suspect, and Perry stated he was “going to take care of business”. Both Perry and the other suspect were angry. Police investigation showed that Clark started seeing Perry’s ex-girlfriend weeks before the murders, which caused a rift between the two men who had been friends. About an hour prior to the shooting, a surviving witness saw Perry drive by and angrily yell out of the passenger’s window of the white SUV. Later in an interview with police, Perry admitted to handling a firearm (the same caliber that was used in the shooting) and riding in the SUV past the house where the shooting took place. He denied being a party to the murders.
The jury returned a guilty verdict for capital murder. As required by law, Judge Cindy Ermatinger of the 443rd District Court sentenced Perry to life in prison without parole.

“This was a heinous crime that shocked the conscience of the community of Ennis and Ellis County,” declared Montgomery. “I pray that this verdict provides some comfort and peace to the victims’ families of this senseless and cruel act of violence.”

First Assistant County and District Attorney Cynthia Walker and Assistant County and District Attorney Garett Smith tried the case, assisted by Investigator Joe Aguilar and Victims Assistance Coordinator Jamie Morales. The case was investigated by lead investigator Detective Sgt. Jason York of the Ennis Police Department. The Waxahachie Police Department also provided support during the initial investigation.

A QUOTE FROM A CBS ARTICLE ABOUT MISSY BEVERS' UNSOLVED MURDER 7 YEARS LATER "We have and will continue to go wherever the case takes us," said Brown. "We still receive tips from across the globe and we follow up on all of them that have even the slightest legitimacy. Best guess is we received over 50 tips from various sources in 2022-23. Many of the subjects of these tips are local, but some are not. In the past 18 months we have visited several locations and interviewed several people outside of the State of Texas in connection with the case."-Assistant Police Chief Scott Brown

On December 31, 2022, The Waxahachie Police Department responded to reports of a shooting in the Walmart Parking lot. Upon arrival, officers located one 18-year-old male victim who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. It was found that two suspects dressed in all black and wearing masks approached the victim and demanded his car keys. When the victim reached into his pocket to retrieve the keys, he was shot multiple times. Both suspects fled the area on foot.

WPD detectives began working diligently to identify the suspects. After many hours of investigation, detectives were able to identify both suspects. One suspect has been identified as a juvenile male, and due to his age, his information cannot be released. This suspect has been charged with Attempted Capital Murder in connection to this offense. The second suspect has been identified as one Ledarius Jordan of Waxahachie. Jordan is being charged with one count of Aggravated Robbery in connection to this offense.

During the course of this investigation, detectives discovered evidence which may link these two suspects to numerous other recent offenses within the City of Waxahachie, and further charges could stem from this arrest.

For further questions regarding this case and subsequent arrest, please contact Detective Starkey at 469-309-4437, or [email protected].
