He urged EU member states to avoid becoming "vassals" and to increase defense spending. Macron emphasized the need to understand China's perspective on Taiwan and called for de-escalation of tensions. He also met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, hoping to persuade Beijing to play a larger role in ending the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Chinese state media praised Macron's visit as an opportunity to boost China-Europe relations.

The deal is considered a critical component in worldwide efforts to safeguard 30% of the world's land and water by the end of the decade, a target known as "30 by 30." Greenpeace estimates that 11 million square kilometers of ocean must be safeguarded each year until 2030 to reach this target.

The United States has given government agencies 30 days to remove TikTok from government-issued smartphones. Canada has also banned TikTok from government devices, citing privacy and security concerns. However, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has warned against additional attempts to ban TikTok for the general public. The House Foreign Affairs Committee is expected to vote on a measure that would give President Joe Biden additional authority to ban TikTok for all citizens.
The app has been accused of being a breeding ground for harmful content, cyberbullying, harassment, and child predators. TikTok has also been accused of collecting data from its users en-masse without their consent, and sending it to China and the Chinese military. Additionally, TikTok has been proven to have a severe impact on attention span, focus, self-esteem, body image, sleep quality, and can lead to addiction.

European leaders have been debating the need for greater autonomy for several years, as a part of this, the EU's defence and security sector has been increasingly prominent. Discussions around Europe's autonomy have included raw earth and magnet value chains, energy supplies, medicinal devices, and electric vehicles.

The US military has shot down a flying object over Lake Huron in North America. This marks the third object to be shot down in North American airspace within a week. It is unclear whether the new occurrences are linked to China's surveillance balloon, but it is noted that the high altitude objects can be used for various purposes. The mechanism used by the US intelligence community to track China's balloon fleet was only found in the last year, which helps explain why previous administration officials have denied knowledge of China's balloon flights over US territory. The size of China's spying operation remains unknown but is believed to be large and conducted globally. The object shot down on Sunday was flying at 20,000 feet above Michigan and was deemed a safety hazard due to its possible surveillance capabilities. Further investigation is ongoing to determine what the object was.
