Florida ranked as the top economy in the nation in 2024, for the second year in a row
Following Florida is Texas, Tennessee, North Carolina and Arizona.
“In 2024, we reduced spending, cut taxes, raised teacher pay, paid down record amounts of state debt, generated a huge budget surplus, ranked #1 in education, allocated record funding for Everglades restoration, and accelerated road and highway projects,” Gov Ron DeSantis said.
Florida’s economy has grown at roughly twice the rate of the nation’s economy since 2019. While Florida was top for economy, CNBC’s “overall” ranking took other factors into effect, such as infrastructure, workforce, quality of life, cost of doing business, technology and innovation, and business friendliness.
Florida ranked 2nd for workforce, 16th for tech and innovation, 25th for cost of doing business, 28th for business friendliness, 35th for infrastructure and 38th for quality of life.
Overall, Virginia topped CNBC’s list for the best states for business in 2024, followed by North Carolina, Texas, Georgia, and Florida at 5th.
The state with the worst economy was Mississippi, preceded by Hawaii, New Hampshire, Louisiana, Kansas, Kentucky and Rhode Island.

A Florida man from Ocala that served as an American soldier in the U.S. Marine Reserves has been fighting for U.S. citizenship after being denied several times.
He shared that during recruitment a military recruiter told him if he served that he would be granted U.S. citizenship when he got out with honorable discharge.
He got married here, had kids, paid his taxes, and even voted in U.S. elections until a trip to his local DMV to renew his driver’s license a few years ago gave him the news.
“It was kind of a shock,” he said. “I figured somehow, somebody had forgot to push a button or do something. I didn’t think it was going to be anything. I just thought here’s my paperwork, here’s my military service and it was going to be done,” he said.
According to federal immigration law, foreigners who serve in the U.S. military are eligible for expedited naturalization if they served during what’s known as a period of hostility.
He enlisted during the Gulf War in the early 1990s, but he wasn’t called for active duty for another seven months. By the time he became active, that period of hostility had ended two weeks prior.
According to his attorney, US Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) is denying his legal status because he wasn’t technically on active duty until after the period of hostility ended, something he had no control over.
After being denied multiple times by USCIS, including on appeal, they filed a case in federal court last year but still have not had the first hearing.

A second person was bitten by a shark in knee-deep water, making it the second shark attack within a 24-hour period in New Smyrna Beach, Florida
The incident occured around 4:15 p.m. on Friday when a visitor from Sarasota was at the beach near the 4300 block south. Officials said the 26-year-old was bitten on his left foot while wading in an inner tube of five feet of water.
The man’s injuries are non-life-threatening and he was taken to a hospital for treatment. On the fourth of July, a man visiting from Ohio was playing football in knee-deep water near Flagler Avenue around 4 p.m. when he was bitten by a shark.
He was also bitten on his foot and had non-life-threatening injuries, officials said. The beach has been busy throughout the holiday week, as lifeguards have reported 400 rescues since Wednesday.

Hurricane Beryl has strengthened into a Category 5 Atlantic hurricane and makes history as the earliest on record.
It is only the second time an Atlantic hurricane has reached Category 5 status in July, after Hurricane Emily did so on July 17, 2005. Beryl is also the strongest known hurricane to pass through the Grenadines, according to US data that goes back to 1851.
It made destructive landfall as a Category 4 Monday on Grenada and is expected to bring ‘life-threatening winds and dangerous storm surge’ on a path towards Jamaica.

FLORIDA NEWS— Jacksonville rapper Julio Foolio has been sh*t and k*lled at a hotel in Tampa, Florida
The Tampa Police Department said it received a 911 call regarding a shooting at 11606 McKinley Drive at approximately 4:40 a.m.
Social media posts show him advertising a pool party at an Airbnb and other images posted promote a birthday party at Teasers, a gentlemen’s club in Tampa.
A release said officers observed two vehicles that had been sh*t at in the parking lot of a hotel. Three other victims were injured and treated at a local hospital.
Police are investigating what led up to the incident and working to identify who is involved. Anyone with information related to the event is asked to share with Tampa PD.

FLORIDA NEWS— A couple vacationing in Florida with their 6 kids drown after getting caught in a rip current 🙏
The family was at Stuart Beach on Hutchinson Island Thursday afternoon when the parents and two of their teenage children were swept out in the current. The teens were able to break out of the current and attempted to help their parents but it became too difficult and the teens had to swim to shore.
Martin County Ocean Rescue located the parents and began life-saving measures. Despite efforts by family members, Martin County Ocean Rescue, paramedics, and doctors at Cleveland Clinic North, the couple did not make it.
Martin County Sheriff’s Office reported that one of the children tried yelling to instruct them that they needed to swim parallel to the shore. Following the drowning, flags were double red and the beach was closed for swimming.
The sheriff’s office said they assisted the six children, who are mostly teenagers throughout the day until other family members from Pennsylvania could arrive in Florida.

Rapper Travis Scott was arrested early Thursday morning in Miami Beach after allegedly yelling at people on a yacht and admitting he had been drinking, telling officers “It’s Miami” 🤷♂️
He was charged with trespassing on property and disorderly intoxication. He later posted bond, which was set at $650.

In a recent Forbes Advisor study ranking cities that would be the worst for summer travel, Jacksonville was rated the worst city to visit in the United States, scoring the lowest score of 100 out of 100.
It scored the lowest for walkability and had the third lowest access to public transportation. Jacksonville International Airport has the second-highest percentage of disrupted summer flights, with an average of 28.9%.
The city has the sixth-fewest parking lots and garages, with just 1.49 per 100,000 residents. Jacksonville has the eighth highest crime rate, at 63.99 crimes per 1,000 residents.
It also ranks eighth for the fewest restaurants with four or more stars on Trip-advisor, tallying 728 establishments.

Several parts of Florida are under a Flood Watch through Wednesday night. That watch could be expanded or extended over the next five days as long periods of showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue throughout the week.
Rainfall totals will be highest across Southwest Florida, in the Fort Myers and Cape Coral areas. Amounts could exceed a foot, with around 10 to 15 inches of rainfall expected.
South Florida, including Miami, will get up to 6 to 10 inches of rainfall this week. Central Florida will see lower totals, with anywhere from 2 to 6 inches.

Disney & Florida $17 Billion agreement in the works 👀
Under the deal’s terms, during the next decade or two, Disney would be approved to build a fifth major theme park at Disney World and two more minor parks, such as water parks. The company could raise the number of hotel rooms on its property from almost 40,000 rooms to more than 53,000 rooms and increase the amount of retail and restaurant space by more than 20%. Disney would retain control of building heights due to its need to maintain an immersive environment.
In exchange, Disney would be required to donate up to 100 acres of Disney World’s 24,000 acres for the construction of infrastructure projects controlled by the district. The company also would need to award at least half of its construction projects to companies based in Florida and spend at least $10 million on affordable housing for central Florida.

A 30-year-old Florida man is in critical condition after he set himself on fire inside a Publix in Plant City, Florida
Shortly after 6:30 p.m., the Plant City Police Department was called to a disturbance at the Publix Supermarket in the Walden Woods Shopping Plaza. A caller told police the man set himself on fire inside the store.
Several people rushed to the man’s aid and worked to put out the flames while waiting for Plant City Fire Rescue to arrive. The 30-year-old was taken to a nearby hospital, where he is listed in critical condition.
