The Great Comet of 1843 Charles Piazzi Smyth //1843

The first observation took place on the evening of February 5 (Yes! Today in history!), 1843, and Smyth described the comet's appearance at the Cape of Good Hope Royal Observatory in South Africa between March 3 and 6. At its brightest, it was only visible from southern latitudes. The image is dominated by the sky, as the main purpose of the painting is to show the comet. The comet formed a disk and Smyth described its core as "a planetary disk with rays coming out in the tail direction". The artist observed that the comet appeared to have a double tail to the naked eye, and the two pennants were running from the head in perfectly straight lines. The comet's tail holds the record for actual size, and its appearance was very distinctive due to the intensity of the light (apparently eclipsing any comet seen in the previous seven centuries) and the length of its tail.

The picture shows the dramatic effect of this natural phenomenon, while maintaining the effect of the brightness of the stars and the redness of the sunset.

In entrambi, una bellissima giovane donna tiene in braccio un animale mentre si volta a guardare oltre la sua spalla sinistra. Il ritratto di Leonardo rappresenta quasi certamente Cecilia Gallerani, la celebre amante del duca di Milano, Ludovico Sforza. La modella di Bachiacca attira direttamente il suo spettatore dentro di sé con uno sguardo civettuolo e sicuro che è piacevolmente ripreso dal suo gatto. A differenza dell'ermellino, che gli scrittori rinascimentali associavano alla castità, alla purezza e alla temperanza, la gatta era considerata un animale apertamente sensuale. Connecting the Amstel river in the south to the IJ in the north, Oudezijds Voorburgwal is Amsterdam's second oldest city canal. Jan van der Heyden chose to paint one of the most striking areas around this canal, near Bierkaai and the Oude Kerk (Old Church). Bierkaai was the area where foreign beer kegs, mostly imported from Hamburg, were unloaded from ships. The dominant and oldest Gothic hall church in North Holland, Oude Kerk was built in the 14th and 15th centuries. In 1658 and 1659, the bells, which are quite prominent in the picture, were completely renovated.

Although this cityscape is illustrated from real life, Van der Heyden added a few comments. In reality the steeple is higher and thinner, and the canal is slightly narrower. The meticulous details that allow us to distinguish the bricks used in the facades are characteristic of the artist's painting style. The numerous small figures that enliven the cityscape are probably painted by Adriaen van de Velde (1636-1672), whom Van der Heyden usually hires for this purpose.

City views and country house landscapes were Jan van der Heyden's specialty. Besides his painting activities, Van der Heyden was an active inventor. In 1668 he devised an ingenious plan for Amsterdam's street lighting that would remain in use until 1840.
