To prepare for a COVID-19 inoculation drive that could start soon in India, the government has planned a dry-run of the vaccination process in four states - Punjab, Gujarat, Assam and Andhra Pradesh - on December 28 and 29.
Two districts in each of these states across the country's four zones will check their preparedness in five types of medical settings - district hospitals, Community and Public Healthcare Centres, urban and rural areas, and private facilities.

Importantly, the dry run will focus on management of any possible adverse events following immunisation, besides conducting mock drills, checking usage of the Co-WIN vaccine registration app, storage and transport preparedness, and crowd management.

In addition, infection control practices will be followed at the site to prevent disease transmission.

"It will provide insights on any gaps or bottlenecks so that those could be addressed before the commencement of the COVID-19 drive. The dry run is to be conducted in one or two districts under the overall leadership of the district collector/magistrate," Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu said on Thursday.

As part of vaccine roll-out plan, 2,360 training sessions have been held so far and 7,000 officials have been trained, including medical officers, vaccinators, alternate vaccinators, cold chain handlers, supervisors, data managers, and coordinators of accredited social health activists (ASHA).

Karnataka on Thursday withdrew a night curfew order - imposed a day earlier amid concerns over a mutated and rapidly-spreading coronavirus strain - hours before it was to come into effect, and shortly after state police issued SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for the curfew period.
The recall marked a second U-turn in three days - on Tuesday Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa said "there is no need for it" and on Wednesday he said it would be imposed "in view of the new strain of coronavirus". Today he said the curfew was being withdrawn "after getting feedback from the public".

"The night curfew had been announced to curtail the spread of the new coronavirus strain after getting advice from experts. (But) after getting feedback from the public, the issue was re-examined, and in consultation with cabinet colleagues and senior officials, the decision has been withdrawn," a statement from the Chief Minister's office said.

"The public should undertake self-quarantine, use masks, social distance, avoid unnecessary travel and avoid government guidelines on the control of COIVD-19," the statement added.

Karnataka, which followed Maharashtra in announcing a curfew - had said it non-essential movement would be restricted from 11 pm to 5 am (the Chief Minister earlier said 10 pm and 6 am) till January 2.

US President-elect Joe Biden spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday night in their first phone conversation since the results of the US election was declared earlier this month. Taking to microblogging site Twitter, Modi wrote, “Spoke to US President-elect Joe Biden on phone to congratulate him. We reiterated our firm commitment to the Indo-US strategic partnership and discussed our shared priorities and concerns — Covid-19 pandemic, climate change, and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific Region.”Further, PM Modi said Kamala Harris' victory is a matter of great pride and ispiration for the Indian-American community.

"I also conveyed warm congratulations for VP-elect . Her success is a matter of great pride and inspiration for members of the vibrant Indian-American community, who are a tremendous source of strength for Indo-US relations," the PM said in another tweet.

PM Modi congratulated Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris on their victory and reiterated New Delhi’s commitment to the Indo-US strategic partnership and discussed their “shared priorities and concerns”.

For the second time this month, a more positive news comes from another Covid vaccine candidate. Moderna Inc today announced that the independent NIH-appointed Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) for the Phase 3 study of mRNA-1273, its vaccine candidate against COVID-19, has shown that the company's experimental vaccine is 94.5% effective in preventing novel coronavirus.

"This positive interim analysis from our Phase 3 study has given us the first clinical validation that our vaccine can prevent COVID-19 disease, including severe disease," said Stephane Bancel, Moderna's CEO.

This study, known as the COVE study, enrolled more than 30,000 participants in US and is being conducted in collaboration with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), part of the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Four civilians were killed and 22 others were wounded in the Neelum Valley region of Pakistan-administered Kashmir, a Pakistani civil administration official stated“Deaths and damage are being reported from across the Neelum Valley,” said Safeer Butt, the official.
Indian officials said they believed there were also casualties among Pakistani security forces.
Pakistan’s foreign ministry has summoned a senior Indian diplomat to protest against the killings in Pakistan-administered Kashmir by Indian shelling, according to a statement.

PUBG Corporation has announced PUBG Mobile's return to India's gaming market. The company says that it is preparing to launch 'PUBG Mobile India', a new game created specifically for the Indian market. PUBG Corp also announced its plans to invest $100 million in India to "cultivate the local video game, esports, entertainment, and IT industries." The company will also be hosting India-exclusive esports events.

The company has also said that in order to maintain privacy and security of players in India, it will conduct "regular audits and verifications on the storage systems holding Indian users’ personally identifiable information to reinforce security and ensure that their data is safely managed." PUBG Corp also says that in the new PUBG Mobile India game, in-game content will be improved and tailored to reflect local needs. Several aspects of the game will also be customised for local gamers, for instance, the game will now be "set in a virtual simulation training ground, new characters automatically starting clothed, and green hit effects to reflect the virtual nature of the game."

The new PUBG Mobile India game will also include a feature that places restrictions on game time to promote healthy gameplay habits.

The BJP put up a winning performance in the Bihar Assembly polls leading the ruling NDA to obtain a majority. The Election Commission of India announced the results of the polls in the early hours on Wednesday. The NDA won an absolute majority in Bihar winning 125 seats, three more than the halfway mark needed for a victory. Nitish Kumar will remain the Chief Miinister, the Bharatiya Janata Party said, a day after it put up a winning performance in the state Assembly polls leading the ruling National Democratic Alliance to obtain a majority even though Mr Kumar led Janata Dal-United posted a fall in total votes gained in a tightly fought race.
"Nitishji will remain Chief Minister as it was our commitment. There is no confusion on this," the BJP's Sushil Kumar Modi and Deputy Chief Minister said today.

After more than 14 hours of counting, many twists and turns and allegations of cheating, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) was announced as the winner of the Bihar Assembly election in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Democrat Joe Biden defeated President Donald Trump to become the 46th president of the United States on Saturday, as per AP tally, positioning himself to lead a nation gripped by historic pandemic and a confluence of economic and social turmoil.
His victory came after more than three days of uncertainty as election officials sorted through a surge of mail-in votes that delayed the processing of some ballots. Biden crossed 270 Electoral College votes with a win in Pennsylvania.
Biden, 77, staked his candidacy less on any distinctive political ideology than on galvanizing a broad coalition of voters around the notion that Trump posed an existential threat to American democracy. The strategy proved effective, resulting in pivotal victories in Michigan and Wisconsin as well as Pennsylvania, onetime Democratic bastions that had flipped to Trump in 2016.

The National Informatics Centre, which designs government websites, has said that it has no information about who has created the Aarogya Setu app and how it has been created. The Chief Information Commission has pulled up the NIC, which comes under the ministry of electronics, and issued a show-cause notice to various chief public information officers asking them to provide a reply to an RTI application which questioned the Covid-19 contact tracing up. The reply can’t be evasive, the CIC has said.The CIC has also asked the National Informatics Centre to explain why its name is there on the website but it does not have any information regarding it.

“The Commission directs the CPIO, NIC to explain this matter in writing as to how the website https://aarogyasetu.gov.in/ was created with the domain name gov.in, if they do not have any information about it,” Information Commissioner Vanaja N Sarna has ordered.

Team India will travel to Australia right after the IPL 2020 for 3-T20, 3-ODI’s and 4-match Test series In an big setback to India, Rohit Sharma has not been included in any of the squad.

Sharma has been ruled out of the upcoming Australia tour with a hamstring injury he picked up in the ongoing IPL. KL Rahul and Kuldeep Yadav have returned to India’s Test squad and uncapped fast bowler Mohammed Siraj has also been called-up for the four-match series in December-January in place of Ishant Sharam.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said his government is taking initiatives to strengthen the agriculture sector in the country so that farmers do not have to face any trouble.

His statement comes amid opposition to the new farm laws by farmers' groups and political parties.

Modi was speaking after inaugurating three projects in Gujarat- one each related to agriculture, healthcare and tourism development- via video conference from New Delhi.

"In order to double the farmers' income and to reduce the production cost and their troubles, we will have to increase our efforts with the changing times," he said.

Cheng Uei Precision Industry Co, a Taiwan-based cable and connector maker, will start mass production for Apple Inc. later this year from its new plant in India, according a report by Bloomberg. Foxconn Technology Group, Pegatron Corp. and Wistron Corp, Apple's major assembly partners have set up either a subsidiary or an iPhone assembly plant in India. They plan to invest a total of almost $900 million in India in the next five years to tap into a new production-linked incentive plan, according a report by Reuters.

India's new ₹665 crore production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme offers companies cash incentives on any increase in sales of locally-made smartphones over the next five years, compared with 2019-20 levels. The scheme aims to help transform India into an export manufacturing hub.

Foxconn has applied to invest about ₹4,000 crore, while Wistron and Pegatron have committed to invest close to ₹1300 crore and ₹1200 crore, respectively, under the PLI plan, according to reports.

Ram Vilas Paswan, Union minister of consumer affairs, food and public distribution passed away late on Thursday, son Chirag Paswan said. He recently underwent heart surgery in a Delhi hospital.

Paswan, one of the country's most noted Dalit leaders, has been hospitalised for the last few weeks. He has long suffered from a heart condition, according to reports.

The players playing in the Dream 11 IPL 2020 will be removed from the tournament and their teams will pay a heavy fine of Rs 1 crore if they breach the bio-bubble put in place for the tournament. All the participating teams will also face a deduction in points if their players breach the bio-bubble.
In a notification sent to all the eight participating franchises by the BCCI, a player will have to undergo a six-day quarantine for an "unauthorised departure" from the bubble, a PTI report said. It will be a one-match suspension if it is a second offence and a third violation will lead to his removal from the tournament with no replacement to be provided, the notification says.

State Governments can take a decision on reopening schools, coaching institution after October 15For the re-opening of schools and coaching institutions, State/ UT Governments have been given the flexibility to take a decision after October 15, 2020, in a graded manner. Cinemas/ theatres/ multiplexes will be permitted to open with up to 50% of their seating capacity, for which, SOP will be issued by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting.

Business to Business (B2B) Exhibitions will be permitted to open, for which, SOP will be issued by the Department of Commerce.

Swimming pools being used for training of sportspersons will be permitted to open, for which the standard operating procedure (SOP) will be issued by Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MoYA&S).

Entertainment parks and similar places will be permitted to open, for which the SOP will be issued by Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW).

All kinds of gathering- religious, social, political, academic allowed with more than 100 persons

Now State/ UT Governments have been given the flexibility to permit such gatherings beyond the limit of 100 persons, outside Containment Zones, after 15th October 2020, which will be subject to certain conditions. They are:

In closed spaces, a maximum of 50% of the hall capacity will be allowed, with a ceiling of 200 persons. Wearing of face masks, maintaining social distancing, provision for thermal scanning and use of hand wash or sanitizer will be mandatory.

In open spaces, keeping the size of the ground/ space in view, and with strict observance of social distancing, mandatory wearing of face masks, provision for thermal scanning and hand wash or sanitizer.

Entertainment parks and similar places are allowed to open.
