A sorrowful and terrifying sight greeted me when I returned to a forest I hadn’t been to in years. The lush and healthy forest of my memories was gone, replaced with dry trees and the remains of what had been cut down for firewood. There were no saplings in sight, only evidence that people had taken what they wanted without thought for replanting or renewal. My parents had taught me from an early age how important it was to take care of the forests, and at just six years old I’d planted my first pine tree. Each year afterwards we’d planted more trees as a family — those thick trunks filled with life brought me joy every time I saw them! We have a responsibility to nature, not just to ourselves, so let’s all do our part in taking care of it — together we can make a real difference!
