♦️ Flaps are those aerofoil shaped panels found at the rear (trailing edge) of the wing.

♦️ When deployed, depending on the type; some extend rear-downwards and some only extend downwards.

♦️For TAKE OFF purpose, the flaps are extended to an angle of about 10 to 15 degrees. This increases the wing surface and wing camber which inturn increases lift production by the wing at low airspeed. This is very important because, without enough lift the aircraft will need to attain high speeds in order to lift off the runway. This is undesirable because a very long runway would be needed to enable this.

♦️For LANDING purpose, the flaps are fully extended (about 45 degrees angle). This increases drag while reducing lift significantly to enable slowing down the aircraft and a smooth touchdown and positive contact of the Aircraft's landing gear with the runway.

♦️Without flaps the take off and landing speeds of aircraft would be high and very long runways would be needed.
