Hey everyone! We’ve been on a bit of a break, but we’re back at it. New episodes coming soon!

In the meantime, I wanted to give a shout-out to . He made his second appearance on our show in an earlier episode this year. We talked about healing, soul songs, steel tongue drums, and a bunch of other awesome stuff. I had the opportunity to chat with him recently about my own personal journey to become better and it was awesome. He asked a lot of good questions, helped me realize some things about where I’m at, and made some goals for moving forward.

If you need someone to talk to or to help you through some things, give him a shout!

In our episode this week, we sit down with the incredible ! Jesse wrote an entire music album about their family’s journey with their daughter through her Down syndrome diagnosis and multiple heart surgeries.

Musically, it’s one of the best things we’ve heard in a long time. As a Dad, the music moves me deeply and touches places most music hasn’t. It’s an incredible piece of work and it comes out this Friday, March 4th! We’ll post about it again when the album drops, but in the mean time, give the episode a listen and get pumped for Friday! You won’t want to miss this!!

(Trigger Warning: infant loss) Did you catch our new episode yesterday? This episode is part 2 in our series of dealing with grief and loss.

We get to sit down with our friend Brandon Cleverly and talk about his perspective on life and how he and his family were affected by the loss of a child. Brandon brings hope and light to a topic that we don’t talk about a lot. Thanks Brandon!

Did you catch our new episode yesterday? In this week’s episode, we get to talk to my brother Brannen. This is the first episode in a series on grief and loss and how we deal with it. Dads don’t often talk about how hard things (like a miscarriage) can be sometimes. Brannen shares valuable insight and some words of wisdom that can help support anyone going through a difficult situation. Check it out!

Did you catch last week’s episode? Dr. John Langdon Down pioneered ethical treatment for people with Down syndrome. He built a mansion for people with Down syndrome to come live in. It had a theater, a trade school, and he hired professional photographers to come dress them up nicely and take pictures of them. He wanted to show how normal these wonderful people were. Want to learn a little more about Down syndrome? Check out our latest episode wherever you get your podcasts from.

As promised in the latest episode, here’s a picture of the sign Michael made for us after we found out about our son’s diagnosis. It’s three chevrons stacked on top of each other, pointing up. The three chevrons represent the three copies of the 21st chromosome. They point up to say that there’s “nothing down about it.” Being a part of the Down syndrome community has been amazing. There are so many incredible parents and kids I’ve met over the last little while. They inspire me. And my son is an absolute ray of pure light. If you know someone in the community, consider yourself part of . It’s a great community to be a part of.

We’re trying out a new game on the podcast. We had Charlie Young, an amazing dad to awesome kids, one of whom has Cerebral Palsy.

On the show, Charlie won the prize of our game where we call out an awesome celebrity dad. This week, it’s !!

I (Michael) have ready Terry’s book “Manhood”. What a great read for anyone looking to better themselves as a dad, parent, or just because you want to be better! We’re inspired by Terry’s fortitude and by all that he’s accomplished on his own and with his family. Thanks for being a good example Terry!

Fortitude.

Last week I had the opportunity to spend several days in Utah’s alpine mountain backcountry chasing elk with a friend.

In three days, we covered 26 miles and climbed about 4,500 vertical feet. We were up well before the sun and went to bed well after sundown. It was one of the most physically demanding things I’ve done lately.

I learned a lot about my personal ability to endure and push through challenges. There were times when I didn’t feel like I could take another step. I had to keep going though. So I dug deep and pushed on.

Our efforts were rewarded and we found a good size bull that will put food on our tables for a long time. It’s good food, but even more rewarding because of the hard work we put into it. A great personal lesson in fortitude.

October is World Down syndrome awareness month. Later in the month, we’re going to have an episode talking about Down syndrome. What questions do you have that you’d like answered?

Being a part of this Down syndrome community for the last two years has been great. It’s something I never really anticipated being a part of, but I’m glad to be a part of . Let me know what questions you have!

The real difference between motherhood and fatherhood:

Fatherhood = making food for your kids first, then you thinking that your kids will eat their food while you make yours…but your kids eat all your food, half of theirs, and render the rest mangled and inedible. Mom makes her own food later because she makes better food than I do. Kids eat that too.

Motherhood = making food for everyone at once, thinking we can all have a nice meal together…but the kids eat only your food, don’t bother dad’s food, and mangle their own rendering it inedible.

P.S. They left me one gulp of my smoothie. This is what I call my breakfast face because I make it a lot during breakfast. 🙄

Decided to take apart a dryer…for funsies?

Nah. Needed some TLC. Never done a dryer project before. Honestly, a little nervous going into this one. If it didn’t work, it’s a hefty replacement fee for a dryer. But hey, guess I lucked out, and learned a whole lot about the dryer. So that was pretty good. And in the end, I’ve got a pretty clean dryer (removed a lot of lint) and no more noise.

And I though a picture of me in the drum would be funny. Not sure if that was a good choice. 😂😂😂

Happy 245th Birthday America!
Both Collin and I, being from America, love this country. We love what it has been, love what it is, and love everything it can be. We have much to celebrate and much to look forward to for our future!

My family celebrated with some patriotically amazing red, white, and blue trifles and the usual fireworks show. Most importantly, we were together as a family, regardless of whatever we did. Also, my dear looks radiant, as she should, because these were crazy delicious.

As a side note, I’ve talked on the podcast about my military service. I’m proud of our country. I’m proud to serve it and it’s citizens. I’m proud of the Constitution and I’m grateful for every soul who has, does, and will ever fight for freedom and the principles of that hallowed document.

God Bless America.

One of my goals this year is to do more outside personally and with my family. provided an awesome space for us to do that today. The smell of a pine forest in the clean mountain air was very refreshing and helped provide some much needed relaxation. What are you doing to get outside with your family during this long, holiday weekend?

We’re gearing up for Season 2 of Just Some Dads Podcast. This is something that’s been on my mind for a while and Michael very eloquently sums up my thoughts. Anything you’d like to see happen for Season 2?

Rant:

My wife had a family emergency that took her away for a few days, leaving me the chance to put on my single-dad-to-three-kids-under-five hat on.

Now, if you have any thoughts already that are something along the lines of, "Whoa dude! I couldn't do that!", "Geez, you have your hands full!", "You're crazy!", "Shoulda never had that many kids (or any) in the first place!", or "Sounds like delivery every meal to me!".....you're the subject of this very mild rant....except that last thought, ya ain't wrong.😉

So here's where this comes from. I've had to make a few trips to the store during this single-dadhood (because I have a kid who eats like an Olympic swimmer). Every. Single. Time. I go to the store, someone(s) comment about the woes of having so many kids to tote around as a dad. *eye roll*

Alright, here's the point people. You're all right. Anyone who has ever had that thought is right. It's tough! It's not particularly enjoyable 100% of the time. It's a ton of work and energy and creativity and patience and grit and gusto and hanging on by a thread. So yeah, you're right and it's nice to hear it.

BUT! Where's the love for my wife? This is her every day. But rarely do supportive comments come her way. It's just expected, normalized, her choice to have x number of kids, etc.

When you see a dad walking around wrangling kids, sure, it's heroic. When I see my wife do it, it's legendary. Titan level epic. The universe should (and does) tremble at her might and power in raising our family. She deserves the praise, I'm just a substitute teacher for a few days. And I must say, I'm not too shabby at it either.😆

We watched “The Mitchells vs the Machines” for a spontaneous middle of the week date night this week. It was heart warming, family focused, funny, and all over the place. I resonated with each of the characters on some level and thought it was really well put together. Definitely would recommend this for your next date night.

Multiple posts in one day? Must be a good day! Eight years ago I convinced Mallory to marry me. It’s been so nice to have her by my side, and this last year was an extra affirmation of that. With our little dude in the hospital for 3.5 months, living in a new state, with family 11 hours away, during a pandemic, we had to rely on each other. We’ve grown a lot this last year. She keeps me going and is a big supporter of this podcast. I love you, Mallory. Happy Anniversary.
