Announcement of the Passing of H.E Dr Hage G. Geingob, President of the Republic of Namibia, 04 February 2024

Fellow Namibians,

It is with utmost sadness and regret that I inform you that our beloved Dr. Hage G. Geingob, the President of the Republic of Namibia has passed on today, Sunday 4 February 2024 at around 00h04 at Lady Pohamba Hospital where he was receiving medical treatment from his medical team. At his side, was his dear wife Madame Monica Geingos and his children.

His medical team, as I informed the nation only yesterday has been trying its utmost best to ensure that our President recovers. Regrettably,notwithstanding the team’s spirited effort to save his life, sadly, fellow Namibians, President Geingob passed on.

Fellow Namibians,

The Namibian nation has lost a distinguished servant of the people, a liberation struggle icon, the chief architect of our constitution and the pillar of the Namibian house. At this moment of deepest sorrow, I appeal to the nation to remain calm and collected while the Government attends to all necessary state arrangements, preparations and other protocols. Further announcements in this regard will be made.

While keeping the President’s bereaved family, and you, dear fellow Namibians, in our thoughts and prayers, Cabinet will convene with immediate effect in order to make the necessary state arrangements in this regard.

May the Soul of our beloved Dr Hage G. Geingob Rest in Eternal Peace.

Deon Hotto 's towering header (86') secured Namibia's first ever win at an African Cup of Nations (AFCON) as the Tafel Lager Brave Warriors defeated 2004 champions, Tunisia by a 1-0 scoreline during the opening match of Group E in Karhogo, Ivory Coast.

The win moved Namibia to the top of Group E after one match, as Mali and South Africa prepare to battle in the second Group E fixture of the day.

JUST IN| Swakopmund Municipal Council officer bearers elections postponed

Presiding officer, Lucia Ilishi (pictured sitting centre) has postponed the election of the Swakopmund Municipality Municipal Council office bearers to a date that would be communicated soon.

This comes after a tie emerged for the position of mayor between Councillor Dina Namubes Independent Patriats for Change) and Councillor Matthias Henrichsen (Swakopmund Residents Association).

Namubes and Henrichsen both received three votes each from a possible eight, while two of the casted votes were abstained.

Two of the ten Swakopmund Municipal Council councillors were absent.

Defeated… The Brave Warriors lost 1-0 to Equatorial Guinea in the Africa World Cup Qualifier Group H match in Malabo. The halftime score was 0-0. The home side took the lead via Emilio Nsue in the 67th minute and held on to claim the three points. Namibia plays São Tomé and Príncipe on Tuesday.

A WORLD FIRST...The world's first ever Green Iron Project known as Oshivela HyIron was inaugurated near Arandis on Monday, 6 November.

With the production pilot phase commencing during late 2024, the eco-friendly mine is projected to produce 15 000 tonnes of iron resulting in zero carbon emissions.

Funded by an investment of NAD600 million from a partnership between the German government as well as the Namibian government and other European stakeholders, the project will provide 50 jobs to locals along with other financial spin-offs to the nearby community.
