This month we are featuring Rick Felton!

Rich is an "avid life-long gardener, inspired by multiple generations of family. Spent the majority of my life in the high altitude of Wyoming where I started saving seeds in hopes of improving plant hardiness year over year. Over the years I have attempted to grow a little of everything, failing multiple times on long-season varieties. But I continually try to improve to show others it can be done no matter where you live."

Rich has contributed beets, peppers, the Sugar Pie Pumpkin, and a number of tomatoes to the co-op over the years, among other crops. All saved from plants he's grown in the short season available to him in the 4b-5a growing zone he's situated in!

Some very clever and industrious person created this wonderfully instructive chart. I have no idea when this was done, or by whom, but it clearly was a labor of significant time and effort. I found this image on a Tumblr blog and the person who wrote about it said they had found it at an antique store, but there was no other information.
What we have here is a very broad ranging display of plant materials and the dye colors that can be achieved from them.
It must be said that this is by no means a full listing of plant matter that can be used as a dye base, but it does give us a fine look at the breadth of hues and shades possible with natural materials.
By the way, the image is large enough that you can make out the plant names if you expand it.

After being pulled by a human out of the tree she was stuck in, the little bear spent a second night freezing and alone, and then came to our small line of houses where I noticed it walking down the street. She nibbled on some grass, and then found a sunny spot in someone’s front yard to curl up and rest.

When we founded Bear-ier Solutions, one of the main goals in making our electrified mats was to make them aesthetically pleasing. If you need an electrified bear mat in front of your door or under a window, the least we can do is make it pretty!

So when a homeowner began hearing about a rash of break-ins by bears in his neighborhood, he gave us a call to proactively protect his only point of vulnerability. His front door. We are so happy to have a beautiful mat to put in front of this gentleman's lovely home.

Giving Back! Community Seeds is Now Open!
Each year, Snake River Seed Cooperative donates thousands of seed packets to community organizations involved in education, farming, gardening, nutrition, food security, and seed saving.

We are proud to share that in 2023 alone, we have significantly expanded our reach, providing vital seed resources to various initiatives. We have sent seeds to 26 school gardens (six more than last year), helped to stock 43 seed libraries (over double from last year), supported 41 community gardens (almost double compared to last year), collaborated with 26 other impactful projects (that aim for multiple community-based-food projects), provided seeds to 11 seed swaps, and made seeds available for auctions, garden clubs, and special events, all centered around community food security.

Our hope is that through these donations, we can support the lives of those in need and share the joy and history that our seeds hold.
