80 Years and The Significance of D-Day Today

“Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force: You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hope and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely. But this is the year 1944! The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to victory! I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full victory! Good luck! And let us all beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.”

—Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Allied Commander, 6 June 1944.

Memorial Day is a time to think about the brave people who have sacrificed to keep our freedoms and way of life safe. The flag represents our country’s unity and strength, as well as the bravery and sacrifice of those who have served and died for us.

As a first-generation American, I’m constantly inspired by the stories of the men and women who serve our country. I recently learned about the Marine Corps War Memorial, and you can find out more about its story by clicking the link in the bio.

“I believe our flag is more than just cloth and ink. It is a universally recognized symbol that stands for liberty, and freedom. It is the history of our nation, and it’s marked by the blood of those who died defending it.” – John Thune

Key Moments From The Pen Symposium By: Samaira Sufiyan

“Establishing a Black Student Union in Kingwood posed challenges due to the significant gap. Xiana joined BSU because “being a minority in Kingwood made me want to create a space where we could exist within our school and help educate those outside of our community as well.” The presence of a more diverse student body over the years has allowed for open discourse without fear of community backlash or stigma. The BSU’s inclusive approach ensures that our events welcome all participants, fostering a space for learning, growth, and broadening perspectives.

One featured discussion at the Symposium focused on the social and psychological ramifications of assimilation and identity within ethnically, racially, and culturally diverse environments (PWIs). This involved presenting capstone projects and mini-dissertations, showcasing both professional and casual analyses. Xiana created it mainly to research more about identity and “blackness.” This is why the Pen Symposium is such a great opportunity; it allows students the freedom and security to explore topics they are passionate about and create awareness.“

Kingwood Softball has been on an impressive journey, emerging as Regional Champions and advancing to the next stage of the playoffs. Senior player Ava Jolley paused to contemplate the upcoming round and express her thoughts on her team.

“I’m so excited to be moving on with such a special team! My advice would be to lean on each other. It truly takes every girl on the field and in the dugout. We just need to keep trusting each other and I know we can go all the way!!” - Ava Jolley

“It’s truly surreal to reflect on how this journey began for KHS as a new DECA program back in August, and now here we are, on the plane bound for ICDC, DECA’s International Conference. Our Diamond DECA program at KHS, along with six students, has earned qualification for the leadership program. We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to Kingwood High School and the entire KHS community for their steadfast support of DECA throughout this year. A special thanks goes to Laura Abel, who took a small group of student leaders and instilled in them the courage to dream big. As we embark on this exhilarating adventure, we are dedicated to returning with a vision aimed at propelling DECA to even greater heights of success.” - Tamir Shaw, KHS DECA President
