Sometimes you completely miss the part of your home that could desperately use a pick me up. For me, it was this awful back patio door that’s been painted brown since I moved in 3 years ago.

I love keeping this door open when it’s nice, but somehow never thought about painting it. A fresh coat of Cyberspace to match my bedroom walls (where it opens into) did the trick!

So take a look around your house. What’s one small easy space that could use a pick me up?

Do you ever have a room you want to makeover, but don’t know where to start? That’s how everyone I know feels! They’ll often come to me to ask “what would you do to this room??”

I break out good old Google Slides and start having fun! When I’m helping others, I want to know:
- What don’t you currently like about the room?
- What do you need in the room to make it functional for you?
- What would you like to make it more aesthetically pleasing?
- What’s my budget? 😂

For this master, my friends wanted:
- The back vaulted wall to have character
- Make the bedroom feel more personalized
- Use their existing furniture if possible, but they were open to a new headboard

With a quick brainstorm, I pulled together the inspiration board.
- a bold statement wall treatment
- a rug to bring more color
- wall treatments to tie together their bed spread (they already had)
- large framed photos of their children and wedding

And bonus, after seeing their statement wall they decided their existing headboard now worked!

So, the next time your stuck, start with a fresh canvas, check out Pinterest for inspiration, and start online shopping for your style!

The snow is (slowly) starting to melt here, so I’m feeling energized to give a fresh new look to my spaces.

This week is going to be all about table styling - from coffee tables, to mantels, buffets, dining and nightstands.

First up will be styling my new coffee table!

You know that one space in your house, that you kind of forget about. But then one day it hits you, this one space doesn’t match the rest of my house! For me, this space was my laundry “closet”. 🧺

Old linoleum flooring. Dark. Not a space that makes my clothes feel clean and fresh!

A quick paint and peel and stick tiling makes all the difference! This closet has immediately brightened up, and it was all with a quick and inexpensive weekend re-do! 🧺🧼💁🏻‍♀️

Throwback Thursday! This week to my first wallpaper. You’ll notice a theme here... my mom is a core part of my wallpaper projects!

This Ikat design gave just enough design to the entry portion of my one bedroom condo in Chicago. Personally, I believe having this unique statement helped my condo sell QUICKLY!

Wallpaper Wednesday!

When I redid my entry with board and batten earlier this year, I knew wallpaper would play a role!

I wanted the focal point to be the board and batten with the dark color. Adding this black and white paper gave just the right amount of pop.

My most recent wallpaper project was actually adding it to the back wall of my master bedroom.

Years ago I fell in love with a dark master bedroom that posted. It served as the original inspiration for my room.

Three years later, I was looking for a little something to bring a little more color to the room. I found this beautiful paper from and fell in love. This was honestly the easiest paper to apply, and it is really nice quality!

My favorite part is that they are sold in individual sheets, so there’s no guess work or measuring to ensure your patterns align.

I’m in LOVE with the new back wall, but I’m still on the hunt for the perfect rug... still taking recommendations 😂

This was the first wallpaper I installed in my condo when I moved in 3 years ago. Thank god for moms! She knew how to install traditional wallpaper + paste after I accidentally didn’t order the peel and stick!

One thing I learned after my first peel and stick wallpaper experience... READ THE INSTRUCTIONS.

I thought, “how hard can this be? you peel, and stick! line the pattern up, peel and stick again!” WRONG.

Apparently wallpaper can begin to separate as it settles. So after a couple weeks my wallpaper had shifted slightly, leaving .25” gap. Yikes!

Mom to the rescue! Thankfully she used the same wallpaper in her laundry room, and experienced the same shifting. She bought some blue and white paint and meticulously painted the flowers to match back up. You’d never notice!

So, either read the instructions and you’ll know if your paper requires and overlap. OR, get to work and have no patience for instructions (like me) and paint the gap after!

Alright, let’s talk drawer organization. One of my favorite things to collect are kitchen gadgets.

Herb Scissors ✅
Garlic Peeler ✅
Biscuit Cutters ✅✅✅

This addiction means my kitchen drawers can also get very cluttered, very quickly. Where did I put that avocado slicer?!?

Every now and then I like to start fresh. A mini purge and clean. Here’s a quick play by play, should you need something to do in quarantine this week/weekend...

1. Remove EVERYTHING from the drawer. This is also a good time to start grouping similar items together. For me, it came down to measuring, cutting, spatulas (so many) and a few “speciality” sections.
2. Stock up on storage bins! You can ALWAYS find these at Marshall’s or Home Goods. I like everything to match, so stuck to
3. Play Tetris for optimal storage in your drawer.
4. This is key. DOUBLE SIDED TAPE. These bins may not fit perfect and slide around. The double sided tape can help everything stay in place!
5. Start filling those bins!
6. My favorite, and clearly most “extra” step, labels. Do you have a house cleaner? A significant other? Visitors that may use your supplies? Now they’ll know where to find what they’re looking for 🙃
7. Enjoy!

Is it just me, or do you sneak a peak of your drawer when you walk by just to enjoy the view after it’s done? Just me. Ok 😀

One of my favorite tips... paint chips!

Not only do these come in handy for some fun arts and crafts for your home, they can be resourceful when you’re out shopping! I keep all the paint chips from my rooms, labeled with their room, in my wallet. The next time I’m at Home Goods and find a pillow I can’t live without, I can check my paint chip to make sure it goes!

The good news is, almost everything goes with fan favorite ‘Agreeable Gray’ 😀

There were a couple things I didn’t think about before starting my board and batten project. 1. Outlets and 2. Transitions.

My outlets were your standard white with plastic plates. I decided I wanted them to blend in with the wall instead of stand out like a big ugly necessity. If you decide you paint your plates, make sure to purchase metal plates! Otherwise you may end up with peeling plates!

For the transition, I didn’t want it to completely stop at the end of the wall. So I decided to add a 2” piece to wrap around the corner. Again, very happy with this decision!

I hope you all have figured out where you’re going to do board and batten in your home! If I can do it, you can too!

Who is ready to try board and batten themselves?? 🙋‍♀️🙋‍♂️

It’s an easy day project. Perhaps the perfect next quarantine project for your home?

Here’s a quick “how to” if you’ve now dreamed up your space and ready to give it a try!

1. Measure, and then measure again!
2. Go to your favorite local hardware store to grab your supplies. You’ll need the wood (we used pre-primed), nails and either a hammer (and strong arms) or a nail gun (borrow or rent!), a large level, sandpaper, caulk and paint. You’re ready to go!
3. Remove your old baseboard.
4. Nail your wood to your wall! Start with your baseboard, move to your chair rail, and then put in your middle pieces. Make sure to use your level!
5. Caulk all edges and nail holes.
6. Sand smooth.
7. Paint once, and reapply after 2 hours.
8. Enjoy!

Once you start I bet you can’t stop! I’m already day dreaming where it will make it to next in my condo!

Isn’t it crazy how the entryway is what welcomes people to your home, but it’s almost always one of the last things we think to decorate?

I couldn’t think of a better project to “welcome” you to my life than the DIY re-do to my entryway this past weekend!

Board and batten is a pretty easy process for a DIY and adds dimension to a smaller space. I’ll be sharing more details throughout the week on the process and steps I followed here. Stay tuned!

Welcome to Efficiently Caitlin! I’m looking forward to sharing my home projects and tips I’ve learned along the way!

Was it just me or did 2020 mean your lights slowly started going out on your tree(s)?!? Luckily this was only a few days before Christmas so I let it slide. Although, a little part of me cringed every time I looked at it half of it lit.

I thought to myself “I am going to be so annoyed when I take this out next year and remember these are out”. Rather than face that disappointment, Amazon came to the rescue! I now have a box stored with my ornaments, ready to decorate later this year!

Crisis (and annoyance at myself) averted!

I LOVE CHRISTMAS. I also love taking it down, organizing it for storage and putting a fresh lens on my space for the new year.

Taking down Christmas is a process though. My decor is precious to me, so I want it to stay safe in storage and organized so it’s quick and easy to put up next year!

I follow some quick and easy steps:
1. Separate breakables from non-breakables
2. Have a storage container (or two, or three) for every room
3. Repurpose (reusable) gift boxes to store delicate items
4. LABEL!

We made it! 2021, it feels good.

January is one of my favorite months. Christmas decorations coming down, while I love them, opens the door for a thorough house cleaning and re-decorating!

It also means I’ve had a couple of weeks to think about new home improvement projects.

Here’s what to look forward to on Efficiently Caitlin over the next month!

Hello! I’m Caitlin. A 30-something, living in Chicago, making my way through life one home decorating and organization project at a time.

I’m looking forward to bringing you along my journey! Maybe I can even help you find the joy in home decorating and organization!
