62 - On Homelessness with Kevin Nye

If there's anything that gets us riled up, it's talking about homelessness and all the things that we as a society are just NOT doing. This week, our friend Kevin Nye has come to talk to us about his new book, "Grace Can Lead Us Home: A Christian Call to End Homelessness," and his experience working with our unhoused siblings. We get into what the church is doing wrong and, YES, what the church is doing... right. This conversation is full of passion and heart and some comedic relief... because how else are we supposed to handle such sad topics?!

Sarah and Justin have a chat about what their practice of spirituality looks like now that they aren't paid to be a professional Christian anymore. When your paycheck is tied to something as personal as your faith figuring out where your profession ends and you begin isn't an easy task . How do you even know who the real you is?

Episode 42: Saint Patrick's Delight

Sláinte everyone! It's the day of Patrick and we have some thoughts about the Emerald Isle's favored son who actually wasn't from there. Also we take a break from covering evangelicalism to talk a little bit about how important it is to take care of yourself. It's crazy days and it is ok to be good to yourself today. It's what the Lord Patrick would want for you.

Enjoy!

"What Don't Say Gay Means in the Classroom"

While the bill in Florida has received more attention, South Carolina has its own Don't Say Gay bill on the docket. The bill would prevent instruction, presentations, discussions, counseling, or materials in any medium”that involve LGBTQ+ identities. It would prevent q***r teachers fro being out to their students because that would constitute discussing such matters. It would prevent teachers from affirming or supporting q***r students, offering them materials, or even assigning books that mention gender or s*xuality.

Taryn Auerbach is a q***r educator in South Carolina. She shares with Brad the devastating effects this bill would have on her and her students.

You're Not Welcome Here, Ep 10: "My Identity Has Nothing to Do With It"

Why can it be so apparent to us that people’s political behavior or social views are a reflection of their group identity, but they will insist that they’re group identity has no impact on these areas of their life? Or why do we have such a strong sense that we hold the social views we do or behave politically as we do because of who we are as individuals, when we know that people are shaped by their group identities? This episode explores these questions and outlines the relation between individual identity and group identity, arguing that an understanding of this dynamic is crucial for thinking about identity and identity politics.

Rev. Rob Lee joins us this week on !

Rob shares his story with us about how he got into ministry, the struggles he went through early in his career, and the path he found to realizing that local church ministry wasn't allowing him to prioritize the things that mattered most. His story is filled with surprising twists. Rob’s career has taken him to some crazy places and he’s spoken on huge platforms like the MTV VMA’s, “the view,” and even the Whitehouse. He shares how despite all of that hype, he has found his true purpose in a less public arena and it’s surprising to even him how his priorities have completely shifted. It’s a great story that we think many pastors, former pastors, or anyone who has had a major life shift will be able to relate to.

This week on the podcast, Sarah and Justin chat a bit about what it means to be called. It is a bit of a free ranging discussion because the term "calling" or being "called" isn't easy to pin down. Even so we think it is important to dive into because for many of us The Call™️ is what changed our lives and the thought of leaving that behind is a difficult thing to grapple with.

We hope you are able to walk away from this episode with a better understanding of what your calling means to you today and some tools to help discover what is next. Welcome to the REVcovery Room!

Maher has been a mechanic, apologist (for both Islam and Christianity), pastor, all around great human, and CEO/Co-Founder at Rising Culture Consulting. Deconstructing your faith while running a ministry is a difficult balancing act and Maher brings a levity and joy to the process that we hope you find helpful as you navigate these things yourself.

22/02/2022

Today on :

Brad speaks with a man he calls Jeff (identity hidden) who went undercover at the book burning led by Pastor Greg Locke. The book burning happened ominously in the wake of the banning of Art Spiegelman's acclaimed graphic novel on the Holocaust "Maus" in a nearby school district.
Jeff wrote an article on the event: https://leftcoastrightwatch.org/2022/02/pro-coup-tennessee-pastor-holds-anti-masonic-anti-disney-bonfire/
Here is an excerpt:
In between threatening to kick in Dunkin Donuts employees teeth and refusing to follow his own dictates opposing divorce, Greg Locke is a pastor at Global Vision Bible Church (formerly Global Vision Baptist Church.) It takes little to find offensive comments on from him.
“Your kid could be demonized and attacked, but your doctor calls it autism.”
“Transgenderism is not a civil right. It’s not normal, it’s anti-biblical. And I’m sorry, just because I have morals and values that does not make me a discriminatory bigot. I’m sick of the day and age in which we live when people call good evil and evil they call good.”

Burning books isn’t new to Greg Locke. In 2019 he jumped to twitter to post a video of himself burning a book titled “The Founding Myth: Why Christian Nationalism Is Un-American.”
Locke’s beliefs are firmly rooted in Christian Fundamentalism. The church he leads, Global Vision Bible Church, originally identified itself with the Independent Fundamental Baptist movement (IFB)—one of the most conservative groups of Christians in the nation. He dissociated from the IFB in mid 2011, claiming that the leadership of the movement had tried to pressure him into taking on a “legalistic mindset of man-made regulations.” Locke claims he pledged to remain amicable with the IFB despite parting ways. Incidentally, in 2019 in Knoxville an IFB pastor and sheriff’s detective called for the trial and summary ex*****on of q***r people.

On today's weekly roundup:

Brad and Dan begin by discussing the Jericho Marches connected to the "Freedom Convoy" protests in Ottawa. Drawing on work by the writer Chrissy Stroop and scholar Thomas Lecaque, they discuss how the Jericho story provides a narrative in which both American J6 and Canadian convoy protesters/rioters are able to use as a way to build group cohesion and justify their actions.

In the next segment Dan walks us through the new John Durham/Hillary Clinton/Spygate distraction making the rounds in the MAGA Universe.

In the final segment, Brad links Charlie Kirk's freakout about the Super Bowl halftime show to the long entanglement among Muscular Christianity, American imperialism, and toxic masculinity.

A new support group, brought to you by of :

This group will focus on recovering from trauma related to purity culture. Specifically, it will center the themes of love, s*x, and masculinity. It is a group for men who lived through purity culture or similar fundamentalist approaches to s*x, gender, and relationships.

Bradley Onishi lived through purity culture. Since he deconstructed in 2005, he has been on a journey of self-discovery and re-imagining his s*xuality, masculinity, and understanding of love. As a group leader who works with the Center for Trauma Resolution and Recovery, his goals are to open space for participants to relay their stories, find community, and to build skills of resilience for healing.
