Throughout every decade dungarees have been a fashion statement, whether it was in the 50’s hippie movement, the civil rights movement, or just 90’s hip hop culture.

Vinyl Matters Wednesday: To Pimp A Butterfly🦋

This 2015 album was rapper Kendrick Lamar’s studio album. Released on March 15, by Top Dawg Entertainment, Aftermath Entertainment, and Interscope Records. Not only did this album hit number one in the U.S. Billboard 200 and became Kendrick’s first number-one album in the U.K., it received the Grammy award for Best Rap Album.

“To Pimp A Butterfly” album has a beautiful meaning behind it. Kendrick uses this album to explore racism, self-love, materialism, and oppression.

Today we celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day!!!

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday in the United States marking the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. Signed into law by President Ronald Reagan in 1983, the first observance wasn't until 1986. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000. MLK Day falls on the third Monday of January each year. However, King's actual birthday is January 15, 1959.

Stevie Wonder released his version of the "Happy Birthday" song in 1981, to help the campaign to make MLK Day a federal holiday. Since then, it has become a longstanding favorite birthday tradition for the African American community.

Today we honor the recent passing of rapper Takeoff who was shot and killed on Tuesday morning November 1st. He was the backbone of the migos contributing to big hits such as Versace, Fight Night, and Bad/Boujee. The Migos rapper has been nominated multiple times for Grammys, BET Awards, Billboard, and MTV. Takeoff’s legacy changed Hip Hop and will live on forever.

Summer Madness

The smooth 70s hit has turned 48 this year and still lives on to be sampled and heard across several genres and social media trends. Kool and The Gang released their 5th studio album, Light of Worlds, which reached 16 on the R&B charts and was a classic staple for the 1974 time period. With unique R&B sounds, Kool and the Gang create Summer Madness; the instrumental tune has hypnotic melodies that can comfort and soothe anyone. The song has been used in a number of film scores and samples in recent years. A few sampled songs to name are “Summer 2022” by Jhene Aiko, “You Know How We Do It” by Ice Cube, “Doggy Dogg World” by Snoop Dogg, “Summertime” by the Fresh Prince & DJ Jazzy Jeff, “Kickin’ Back” by Mila J, “Certainly (Flipped It)” by Erykah Badu as well as an extensive list of other timeless songs. The tune certainly gives off a unique “summer” light hearted feeling, an unexplainable feeling everyone can get a sense of during the summer. This song matches and expresses those emotions perfectly and has continued to be admired as the warm tender song that people enjoy every day.
