Bjorn Ironside was a legendary Viking king and warrior who lived in the 9th century. He was an acclaimed son of Ragnar Lodbrok, another famous Viking leader, and may have started the Munsö dynasty that ruled Sweden for centuries. He was known for his bravery and invulnerability in battle, earning him the nickname Ironside.

According to some sources, Bjorn Ironside was buried on the island of Munsö in lake Mälaren, Sweden. The island is part of a larger group of islands called Munsö, which means "the island of the dead". The burial mound of Bjorn Ironside is called Björn Järnsidas hög or Björn Ironside's mound. It is one of the largest mounds on the island and has a stone with a runic inscription on top. The runic inscription reads "Thou rgutr, you ... ... breath and God[s']", which may be a curse or a blessing for anyone who disturbs the grave.

The mound is not well preserved and is mostly covered by trees. It is not marked by any signs or fences, but it can be easily seen from the road that runs along the edge of the forest. The mound is part of an old collection of graves that consists of around 45 smaller mounds and 150 human remains. Some of the graves contain valuable items such as weapons, jewelry, and coins that date back to different periods of Swedish history.

Bjorn Ironside's grave on Munsö island is a fascinating place to visit if you are interested in Viking history and culture. It is also a reminder of the legendary deeds and adventures of one of the most famous heroes of Scandinavia.

In Norse mythology, Thor is the son of Odin and Earth.
Odin is the chief of the Aesir, and Thor is one of his prominent sons.
Odin is the head of the Gods. He only had one eye. Odin had sacrificed the other eye in Mimir's well to gain wisdom. Odin was, among other things, the god of war and death, and the Vikings who died in battle belonged to him or Freyja.
Thor is often depicted as the god of thunder, lightning, storms, has strength of oak trees, and is the protection of mankind, but also a symbol of fertility.
The relationship between Odin and Thor is a significant aspect of Norse mythology, and both gods play important roles in various myths and stories.

"In Norse mythology, ravens symbolize several different things, including wisdom, knowledge, power, and magic. They are also associated with death and the underworld, as well as with Odin, the god of war, wisdom, and magic. According to legend, Odin would send his ravens into the world daily to gather information and bring it back to him. This is why ravens are often seen as symbols of intelligence and knowledge in Norse mythology."

The Heiðinn Chronicles - Sága a Gift

"What can you give to one small girl?
A diamond ring, a baton to twirl?
A pretty pink dress with lots of bows,
or dainty sandals that show her toes?

A walk in the woods, a romp in the park,
a shopping trip from dusk till dark?
A shiny new bike, a kitten for a pet?
No, there's still time for such things,
yet...

Give her a day of her very own.
Just one small girl and her Dad alone.

Give her the gift that only you can,
the companionship of her old man.

Games are outgrown and toys decay,
but she'll never forget
if you give her a day."

23/09/2023

The Egtved Girl
(c. 1390–1370 BC) was a Nordic Bronze Age girl whose well-preserved remains were discovered outside Egtved, Denmark in 1921. Aged 16–18 at death, she was slim, 1.6 metres (5 ft 3 in) tall, had short, blond hair and well-trimmed nails. Her burial has been dated by dendrochronology to 1370 BC.

In the coffin, the girl was wrapped in an ox hide. She wore a loose, short tunic with sleeves reaching the elbow. She had a bare waist and wore a short string skirt. She had bronze bracelets, and a woollen belt with a large disc decorated with spirals and a spike. At her feet were the cremated remains of a child aged 5 to 6. By her head there was a small birch bark box that contained an awl, bronze pins, and a hair net.

Before the coffin was closed she was covered with a blanket and an ox hide. Flowering yarrow (indicating a summer burial) and a bucket of beer made of wheat, honey, bog-myrtle and cowberries were placed atop. Her distinctive outfit, which caused a sensation when it was unearthed in the 1920s, is the best preserved example of a style now known to be common in northern Europe during the Bronze Age. The good preservation of the Egtved Girl's outfit is due to the acidic bog conditions of the soil, which is a common condition of this locale.

Lady Godiva by John Collier 1897 ... Lady Godiva) [died 1066-1086] She was a noblewoman who lived in the late 11th century, from the Anglo-Saxon tribes. She is the wife of Leofric, Earl of Mercia and Lord of Coventry... The story of the painting is ... myth says she was greatly disturbed by the exorbitant taxes that her husband imposed on the people... After she repeatedly asked him to reduce the burden, Leofric said he would not reduce the taxes unless she rode a horse naked in the city... He thought he was asking her for the impossible, but Godiva did so, her hair covering all of her body except her legs... Godiva required the townsmen to remain indoors at the time fixed for her ride... When the people learned of the dedication of the woman who sacrificed for them, they stayed in the house and closed the windows out of respect for her, except for one person... Peeping Tom, a citizen who looked out his window, apparently became a part of the legend in the 17th century. In most accounts he was struck blind or dead!

Heddal Stavkirke, Norway

When Norway was introduced to the Christian faith, the people of Heddal also wanted to build their own church.
A man called Raud Rygin – Red Rygin – was given the task of heading up the process. He is believed to have been the owner of the farm Ryen.
As Raud pondered on how to best execute his mission, a stranger came to him and offered his help.
The stranger promised to erect and complete the church if Raud fulfilled one of the following three conditions:
Plucked the sun and the moon out of the sky,
Let his heart’s blood run, or
Guessed the stranger’s name.
If he failed his chosen task, the stranger would cut out Raud’s Christian heart.
Raud Rygin was certain that he would be able to guess the stranger’s name by the time the church was completed – and went for option 3.
The stranger started his work with full force.
On day one, all the building material was ready on the site.
On day two, the church’s main tower was up.
On day three, the work was all done.
Raud had not expected such speed – and was sick with worry. It was when he was out walking in the nearby landscape, pacing back and forth, desperately trying to guess the stranger’s name, that he heard a song from inside a mountain; it was a troll-mother soothing her child.
– Hush, hush, little child, – tomorrow comes your father Finn with a Christian man’s heart.
And this is how it came to pass that the mystery was solved: the stranger’s name was Finn, and he was a disguised troll from inside the mountain.
Raud Rygin hurried back to the church and went inside. He hit one of the wooden pillars with his fist and said to the stranger next to him: – This pillar is not entirely straight, my good man Finn!
When the troll heard his name mentioned, he was furious and stormed out of the church and up a hill. From there, he threw 5 boulders towards the church. Luckily, they did not hit.
The people of the community quickly got the church bells ringing, and the troll could not stand its intolerable Christian clang. It soon upped sticks with its family – and moved to a mountain far away.

22/08/2023

Some Viking invaders were rich in tea with hallucinogenic herbs that made them hyperaggressive and less able to feel pain, while running naked to battles, according to the new discoveries.

The legendary attacks carried out by the cruel Vikings played an important role in the history of Europe and Great Britain, at the same time as they plundered, from their famous and long boats.

The fiercest of all were the elite warriors, the bare-breasted, called Berserkr.

The Beserkirs (or berserkers) were legendary for recklessly entering the battles, destroying anyone who had the misfortune to cross their path.

Their energy, power and invulnerability to pain made them some of the most feared warriors in Medieval Europe.

But when the fight was over, the besiegers seemed to be out of breath, stopping and returning to the camp as weakened men, who remained exhausted for days.

Now, scientists believe that the secret behind the fearless struggle was actually drug use.

The Vikings had found a way to transform a poisonous plant called Henbane Fedorenta (also known as Hyoscyamus niger) into a battle booster.

The plant contains two hallucinogens: hyoscyamine and scopolamine — this much more potent and also found in the voodoo drug, Devil's Breath.

Ethnobotanist Karsten Fatur told The Times that the Vikings could have made tea with the potent herb or drunk it with alcohol or rubbed it on the skin with goose fat.

He said: "It would have reduced the feeling of pain and made them wild, unpredictable and highly aggressive."

Symptoms of smelly Henbane tea include the urge to undress, increased aggression, unpredictability, stained face and hyperactivity.

He added that their "disassociative effects" made them "savage" and "could have allowed them to kill indiscriminately, without moral scruples".

The symptoms of the drug also explain the reduction effect, which frustrates other theories that the besiegers were really crazy or that they would inject some kind of magic mushroom.
