In Cameroon people sit in their houses and call it packaging. The people's mentality projects "It's somehow shameful and downgrading to see a celebrity working." Go out and hustle dear nobody is coming to offer you a deal. Be your own boss. There is nothing shameful about earning money honorably. I got popular through my talent but I've grown to understand that talent is never enough and you need to invest in yourself first. Many record labels in Cameroon are incapable of sustainability so it is your direct responsibility to network, learn business skills and market your art in the best possible way. It's never too late to go back to the drawing board. The music business is not about talent. It is about being skillful and an opportunist! ".
This is something people often neglect especially in Africa as she rightly said. At times you have to forget that so called celebrity status and think about an innovative legit side hustle that can put you food on table. In most cases it is usually very rare for the label to recieve thesame share of the profit with the artist. Let's say the label was generous enough when they were signing you, they might give you 8% of the profit generated and this is how most of this contract papers are structured. Now imagine an artist who didn't inverse part of the advance that was paid to him, you either start another contract with the label or depart and go broke. In most cases,it is obvious the artist will wanna renew the contract and this is what the label likes which is why they usually trick you into spending on luxury since they know it will help in emptying the bag. Take a case now where the artist failed to generate the loan the label gave to him, the artist will autamatically becomes the label's property or either go and borrow money to pay the label which will leave the artist in a state of depression. Now you know how a record label operates

After the deal has been completed, the label might give the artist an advance of let's say $500k. They will advice the artist to spend this money on luxiries so as to look classy which is part of the naive ideology and it is a very big trap. $500k has been deducted from the total sum which means you are now left with $1.5m but you now owe the label $2.5m. The label will start sponsoring the artist's projects which include studio times and so on. Let's say the label uses $500k in successfully completing an album for the artist, the loan is now $1m remaining as balance. The label will now start to market your projects still using this money. Let's say the label uses $500k to market the projects out of the $1m you are now left with $500k. The artist will now start touring still from this money. The label will pay expensive hotels hoping the artist will blow up and the money will eventually Come back. Let's say all the remaining money was used in touring and the artist successfully emerged and started gaining some recognitions and start generating some money. Let's assume at the end of the contract, the artists generates an amount of $2.5m, the label will start by deducting its $2m and then the remaining $500k can now be shared between the artist and the label but sharing will depend on the innitial plan of the contract

The truth behind Record Labels!
It is always a big dream for most up comers in the game to get signed to a record label hoping they could get some recognition and make some good money but they don't actually understand how the system operates which is why they end up playing victims. It is necessary to have a knowledge of how the algorithm works so as not to fall into the traps others have fallen before.
First and foremost, when a label proposed to an artist a contract papers with some huge amount of money, first thing to understand is that this is not your money but it is more of a loan been given to you by the label of which they are expecting an interest on the loan.
Let's say an artist signs a $2m deal. This simply means the label has lended you $2m which will run throughout your contract duration. At the end of this contract, if this amount is not realised, you will automatically becomes the record's property

Nigerian mega star announced the release of his album 'Made in Lagos' and made two years before releasing the album.
