Thulani Maseko’s Assassination: who stands to gain the most?

The cold blooded assassination of Human Rights Lawyer Thulani Maseko has left us reeling once more as a nation. Even though we are plagued by questions like, who killed Thulani? Why did they kill him? A more pertinent one arises in our consciousness: Who stands to gain the most from the death of the Human Rights Lawyer?

Thulani Maseko was resilient in the fight against state repression, he represented activists who were persecuted by the state. He was instrumental in overturning the Suppression and Terrorism Act and Sedition and Subversive Activities Act in 2016. Maseko was for human rights, dignity and democracy and he emphasized that both in words and deeds. Still the question begs an answer, who stands to benefit the most when the people’s champion has fallen?

The reality is that, Eswatini is notorious for human rights violation and infringement. Recently, the has been a rise in kidnapping and murder cases of the Mass Democratic Movement members by state agents while some have been killed by ‘unknown people’ and nothing but an apathetic murmur has been heard from the government. That’s what makes assumptions like that of Thulani being hit for misappropriating donor funds seem anything but propaganda.

Surely we know that man does nothing for no gain. Thulani was no ordinary lawyer, his expertise as a human rights defender gave him authority to make the state human rights compliant and be able to hold authorities accountable. The question still stands, who gains the most by killing Thulani Maseko?

RELEASED PUDEMO MAN RECOUNTS BRUTAL ATTACK BY KING'S SOLDIERS

"Angitati nekutsi ngingubani ligama, bayashaya labantfu" these are sentiments of distraught PUDEMO member Tshepo 'Soul T' Sithole after he was abducted and severely beaten by soldiers on Tuesday, 15 November at the Zombodze army barracks.

Sithole was kidnapped with his two brothers Sanele Sithole, who is the Chairperson of SWAYOCO's Ludzeludze branch and Mpendulo Sithole, the Recruitment Officer. The trio was held from around 10 am to around 5 pm, and subjected to a brutal physical interrogarion by the soldiers until they were in an almost unconscious state when they soldiers would revive them before starting the process all over again.

"We were at Ludzeludze complex making plans to get to Mbabane when we ran into a battalion of soldiers. When they saw us, their leader identified as Sigudla by his colleagues bridged his gun, commanded us to come forward. He ordered one soldier to guard us while he went to the back of Mandlenkosi Grocery to make a call"

Sithole says the attack seemed planned as Sigudla confirmed their identities with the caller while telling them what clothes they were wearing, before talking to one Ndumiso Fakudze who pointed at them while conversing with the officers in front of the gathering onlookers. They were then taken to Zombodze army barracks where they were interrogated and brutally beaten by the soldiers.

"When we got to Zombodze the soldiers began interrogating us, they asked us questions like, 'are you the one's responsible for the arson attacks in the country?, whether we were affiliated with SWALIMO, EFF and PUDEMO political parties. They went through our phones and when they found images, songs and videos linked to politics they said their suspicions were confirmed as we were the ones they have been searching for."

Sithole further narrated how the soldiers brutalized them to get answers revived with sugar-less sour porridge when they were about to pass out.

REVEALED: King Mswati heavily assaults Inkhosikati LaMbikiza, Queen rushed to South African hospital.

BY ZWELI MARTIN DLAMINI
Swaziland News, 24th August 2022

MBABANE: King Mswati allegedly assaulted iNkhosikati Sibonelo Mngomezulu known as LaMbikiza for questioning him about the real father of Princess Sikhanyiso’s son Prince Phikolezwe.
This is not the first time allegations of abuse towards eMakhosikati emerge against Mswati.
The late Inkhosikati Nothando Dube allegedly sent pictures to political activist Lucky Lukhele and journalists reporting the physical abuse she suffered at the hands of her husband.
It has been reported that the late Inkhosikati LaDube was allegedly isolated and heavily assaulted by the King and his bodyguards after being found in bed with Ndumiso Mamba, the then Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs.
Reached for comments, Percy Simelane, the King’s Spokesperson said he was only responsible for the public image of the King not private matters, adding that any effort to enquire about this matter would be an invasion of the King’s privacy.
“We are not aware, it is the public face of the King that is our area of interest and concern. We therefore wouldn't be able to know what happens behind closed doors and any effort by us to enquire along those lines would be invasion of privacy,” said the King’s Spokesperson.
A questionnaire was sent to Inkhosikati LaMbikiza via her mobile number, however, she had not responded at the time of compiling this report.
Reached for comments, Lucky Lukhele, the Spokesperson of the Swaziland Solidarity Network(SSN) confirmed that he received pictures as evidence from the late Inkhosikati LaDube adding that he was also aware of the assault against Queen LaMbikiza.
“I am aware that LaMbikiza was assaulted by Mswati and she lost her teeth in the process. Other Queens are suffering at the hands of the King, he doesn’t want them to socialize with men that he sees as competitors, he has a low self-esteem. LaDube even reached out to me reporting that Mswati assaulted her, she even shared some pictures,” said the Spokesperson of the Swaziland Solidarity Network.
Even though the Gender Based Violence(GBV)matter involving Mswati remains a top secret, LaMbikiza subsequently shared the sad story with some of her close friends while in hospital on or around February 2021.
It is alleged that at the time, the Queen had gone for an implant of an artificial set of teeth.
“It’s true, she told me kutsi loMjita(Mswati) umshaye wamkhokha ematinyo. Wangitjela asayowafaka lamatinyo waphindze wangitjela noma asabuyela ayowalungisa(meaning:She told me that he assaulted her and she lost her teeth, she even told me when going to hospital for the artificial teeth). So if you want to verify this, check her passport around February 2021 and then follow that evidence. She was assaulted a few months or weeks after the birth of Phikolezwe,” said the insider very close to Queen LaMbikiza.
Now, an independent investigation conducted by this Swaziland News uncovered that Inkhosikati Sibonelo Mngomezulu(LaMbikiza) left the country on or around 15th August 2022, her diplomatic passport suggests that she flew to South Africa with flight number 3DC-SWz around 10:54am.
But royal insiders who alerted this publication about the trip said this time, the Queen was receiving medical treatment in South Africa for a completely different illness not for the teeth.
“She is sick and has gone for an operation. It’s true that these days there’s a serious conflict between the King and the Queen. Lokunye lokwenteka, Make watjela iNkhosi kutsi ayilalele bantfu ibanike loku labakufunako ngoba ngeke alwe nebantfu aphumelele, naye bakatsi uyamsita phela uyam-advisor njengendvodza yakhe, hhawu wavele watsi lona sotsengiwe,LaMbikiza ufuna kumbulala. Akayi nekuya eNkoyoyo, nakwentekile waya ufike ajima-jime nje ajike(meaning: Another thing, the Queen tried to advise the King that he must listen to the people, instead the King accused her of being a sellout and that she was plotting to kill him,” said the royal insider who is very close to Mswati and Queen Sibonelo Mngomezulu.
Worth-noting, a former member of the King’s Advisory Council also confirmed that the Queen reported the assault to him.
“She even showed me a picture after the assault and was forced not to appear in public until she receives medical treatment,” said the former member of the King’s Advisory Council.
King Mswati rules eSwatini as an absolute Monarch with Executive, Judicial and Legislative powers, he allegedly manipulated the Constitution and placed himself above the law.
As the result, the King cannot be taken to court in eSwatini and be held accountable for serious allegations of Gender Based Violence(GBV).
Reached for comments, human rights lawyer Nosimilo Vilakati said domestic violence remained a gross violation of human rights adding that it didn’t matter who the perpetrator was.
“National and international law instruments serve the purpose of protecting every individual against any form of abuse. Analysis of domestic violence as an abuse of human rights is addressed in national courts. However, when domestic courts fail to do this, international litigation provides positive mechanisms. The right to be free from domestic violence is not directly stated in international human rights treaties because domestic violence often results in battery,r**e,murder,” said the human rights lawyer.

The government of Eswatini has failed to supply public services, to increase salaries and yet still has millions of funds allocated to Buganu Ceremony. This shows that this government has no interest in the public' s welfare nor its development. Many people have been talking about the issue and it's time you do too. What's your opinion on the way King Mswati’s Government allocates resources? Please share your thoughts on the matter. Here is Dima Katso's opinion;

KING MSWATI:I am using public funds to take editor to court.

BY MDUDUZI HLOPHE
Swaziland News, 08 March 2022

MBABANE: While University students are struggling with scholarships as a result of Government's failure to fund the education system, King Mswati has revealed that he uses public funds to ‘fight’ editor Zweli Martin Dlamini and this Swaziland News.
The King revealed this through an affidavit filed by his lawyer Brian Kahn in another application where the Government and Mswati want the editor to be imprisoned for contempt of court.
Mswati accused the editor and this publication of failing to comply with a court order issued on 08 February 2022 and by so doing, the King concluded that Dlamini was delaying the main application.
The King through his legal representative further alleged that by employing three counsel, the editor and this publication clearly had access to considerable funds.
“The respondents clearly have access to considerable funds( a conclusion drawn from their being in a position to employ three counsel for an uncomplicated interlocutory application). They are therefore financing frivolous litigation and forcing the applicant to spend public funds which could be put to far better use. Even with adverse costs orders granted against the respondents, the fact of the matter remains that the applicant will never be in a position of being refunded all the wasteful expenses which have accrued thus far”, said the lawyer representing the King.
The editor is expected to file papers and oppose the King’s application.

STUDENTS UNION GENDER SECRETARY: If bum-shorts are flashing so is Indlamu.

BY NOKWANDA MAMBA
Swaziland News, 05 March 2022

MBABANE: Sandzi Mnisi, the Gender Secretary for the Swaziland National Union of Students (SNUS) says if bum-shorts are considered as flashing, then indlamu worn during umhlanga ceremony should be considered as such as well.
Speaking to this Swaziland News on Friday, the SNUS Gender Officer said it was disgusting that eSwatini still had people who thought the way women dressed could be the reason for r**e adding that there was the umhlanga ceremony where young girls paraded before King Mswati in short skirts with their bare breast.
“It is so disgusting that we will have people who think that they way we dress as women can be the reason for r**e. This is a violation of human rights, people must be allowed to dress the way they feel comfortable”,she said.
The SNUS Gender Secretary was part of those who participated in the march that was organised by the Swaziland Action Group Against Abuse (SWAGAA) in protest against police harassment on Friday. This was after the police allegedly harassed a woman for wearing a short jumpsuit claiming that she was inviting rapists.

Prince Omari says his father is Mswati and is not Indlovukazi’s son, gets R3million per year taxpayers money.

BY ZWELI MARTIN DLAMINI
Swaziland News, 03 March 2022

MBABANE: Prince Makhosini Omari Dlamini says his father is King Mswati hence his annual royal benefits including a R3million grant.
This comes amid unanswered questions whether Prince Omari was Indlovukazi, Queen Ntombi Tfwala’s son and a brother to Mswati or not due to the high level of secrecy demonstrated by royalty ever since Dlamini emerged and claimed his royal status.
Reached for comments, Ludzidzini Governor Lusendvo Fakudze said he was not aware that Omari was a child to Indlovukazi.
According to Swazi culture,Mswati risked being dethroned by senior members of the royal family if it’s proven that his mother gave birth to another child.
An independent investigation by this Swaziland News uncovered that it was first claimed that Prince Omari Dlamini was a son to Phindiwe Sangweni, a South African Advocate, however, he has been enjoying a royal status in eSwatini with the identity of his real parents marred by a cloud of controversy.
Prince Omari was later taken to Nkoyoyo Palace to be taken care-off by Inkhosikati LaMbikiza as one of her sons in accordance with Swazi Law and Custom “Kumfaka esiswini”.
It has been disclosed that while residing at Nkoyoyo Palace he had to leave after an alleged conflict with Prince Lindani who allegedly forced Omari to refer to him as “Bayethe”.
The conflict between Omari and Lindani erupted at the time when King Mswati was sick and receiving consistent medical treatment within his hospital at Manzana.
On or around 12th September 2021, Prince Makhosini ‘Omari’ Dlamini had a recorded interview with this editor where he narrated how he was allegedly born from one of Mswati’s girlfriends.
The call was initiated by the Prince and it lasted for about an hour after this publication published a video where Omari was bragging saying he was enjoying “tax payers money”.
“I am a member of the royal family but you know my story kutsi bengisolo ngiphikwa kuhle kutsiwa ngiwabani and I have been fighting this”, he said.
But the disclosure by the Prince comes in the midst of various versions whether Omari was Mswati’s or Indlovukazi’s son, the Prince disputed that the he was the Queen Mother’s son but confirmed that he had direct access to her.
This publication is in possession of evidence suggesting that as a member of the royal family, Prince Omari uses an MTN contract number starting with 7616 that was specifically designed for Emakhosikati(King’s wives) and Mswati’s children.
The Prince also benefits R3million from taxpayers money as his annual royal grant and has an alleged direct access to Indlovukazi Ntombi Tfwala.
On around March 2020, the royal family allegedly used the State controlled Times to introduce former Mtfongwaneni MP Mjuluko Dlamini as Prince Omari's father.
The newspaper then reported that Mjuluko was against subjecting himself to a DNA test to prove whether he was the father to Prince Omari or not.
Now, this Swaziland News is in possession of evidence suggesting that even after being introduced to Mjuluko as his father, Prince Omari continued to receive royal benefits including the annual grant.
The Prince confirmed to this publication that he received R3million per year as his royal grant just like Mswati’s children and refuted sentiments suggesting that former MP Mjuluko Dlamini was his father.
It could not be ascertained why the real parents of Prince Makhosini Omari Dlamini remained a top secret within the royal family even though he continued to be taken-care.
Prince Omari told this editor that he was eager to see the country retaining peace and stability.
“I am talking all this to you as my brother njengoba nawe ungulomunye uMlangeni. We need to work on this and speed-up the dialogue otherwise things are really bad. I am thinking of persuading Indlovukazi to speak to his son to agree on the dialogue. You on the other side, you can assist us calm the people not to protest while we talk, these protests are not good for everyone”, said the Prince.
Prince Omari is among members of the royal family who benefit billions of taxpayers money in a country where about 70% of the population lives below the poverty line.
King Mswati subsequently ordered the arrest of pro-democracy MPs Bacede Mabuza and Mthandeni Dube merely for demanding democratic reforms on behalf of the people who elected them, the country is in the midst of a political crisis.

I interviewed Velaphi Kutsu Ngwenya on 31 January 2016. He told me he was 46 at that time. He said he owned a public service vehicle and had 4 children. He taught me a lot about hustling in that 30 minute conversation.
May his enterprising soul rest in peace.

By Thembeka Dlamini

WELL known sweet vendor Velaphi Kutsu Ngwenya (46) of Mpompotha scoffs at the idea of anybody working and earning anything below E2000 per month.

“I am at times able to make that much a day and I don’t understand how one is expected to live on E1000 per month,” he said talking about a defunct filling station where the workers used to be paid about E1000 per month.

“I was shocked to hear that those girls were earning that much,” Ngwenya said in an uppity kind of way.

He was found at Mhlaleni of Sunday evening where he had started the conversation by revealing that he had been accosted by a young man who was in the company of his girlfriend.

“You know sisi, this place is not safe,” he said addressing this reporter before narrating how the young man rudely asked for a loan of E200.

“I told the man that I did not have the money and he threatened to take it from me forcefully,” he said as he looked around.

A few minutes later transport to Mbikwakhe arrived and after boarding, he started on the conversation concerning the downfall of the petrol garage owner.

“Some people don’t know how to run a business,” he said to the driver of the vehicle after pleasantries had been exchanged and it turned out that they were from the same area.

When he touched on the minimum wage, he was asked how much he made a month, “Hha sofuna kungikhuthuza (you want to pick pocket me now),” he said dismissively but relented that he was at times able to make E2000.

“I recently bought a kombi which services the Manzini-Mananga route. I have also hired a driver who works well for me,” he said.

Posing for his picture to be taken, he then started counting his day’s takings from a bag he retrieved from his pocket.

Palming a few E200 notes, he got angry each time he was disturbed in his counting because he said caused him to forget how much he had.

“I have four children,” he offered when asked about his personal life and then clammed up when asked whether he had a wife or a girlfriend.

……………

Kutsu said he started his small business empire selling sweets in buses.

His modus operandi has been noted several times and it involves boarding a long distance bus and handing out sweets to the passengers from the door to the end of the bus.

Often times, the passengers take the sweets with gratitude with the assumption that they were getting them for free.

On return from the back, Kutsu would then ask for money and collect anything from E1 to E5 for sweets worth a fraction of those eaten. Due to his forcefulness, few have the heart to count out the exact amount of the sweets consumed and let him have his way.

POLICE SEXUALLY HARRASS FEMALE LISWATI FOR WEARING A SHORT OUTFIT.

Thoba Mtshali, a female Liswati has come out to narrate how she was assaulted by members of the Royal Eswatini Police Service merely for wearing a short outfit.

Below is her Twitter thread narrating the incident.

So I park near the police offices by the plaza, going to Clicks for a quick errand. As I walk past I’m rudely yelled at by a male police officer calling me to come into the office , two police officers.

I obviously oblige. They tell me to go to some room and wait there I’m being arrested for wearing nothing, he’s yelling that he’ll make an example of me . I’m out there triggering men with my shorts then when men decide to r**e me I’ll be out here crying wolf and annoying them.

Whilst In absolute shock he calls every other police officer and orders me to parade around the room to show them my “bums”. I parade because almost all of them have guns and with the obvious brutality from these people I’m not safe. There were probably about 12.

Cops that came into this room and I had to parade for each and every one of them. Yep, females too who couldn’t believe what they were seeing. One of the police officers went on to ask “what if I get a hard on whilst you’re dressed like that”

Ofwhich I didn’t respond. He went on to say I don’t respect men and he will make an example out of me because he’s taking this case straight to court. I must call my lawyer or whoever I want. They told me they’re charging me a flashing offense under the SODV act.

Because now I was a spectacle I decide to call my mom to please bring me a long dress or something as they were threatening to take pictures of me and present them in court which the thought just traumatized me. Mom comes in about 20 mins later, confused too.

They ask her how could she allow me to walk out of the house dressed like that, mom says she didn’t see because I’m at Mfundo’s place not hers these days. They go on to yell in shock “omg she even has the guts to live with a man and has a child out of wedlock”

They ask her what she has to say about me walking around naked.. my mom says she doesn’t have anything to say (she hasn’t realized how bad the situation was) I look at her and ask her to apologize on my behalf and not cause a scene about rights because knowing her😏

She starts apologizing on my behalf, mind you I’ve been apologizing for triggering and disrespecting them for the past hour. Long story short they take my details and mom begs them not to do anything to me as they were insisting on the arrest &throwing me in jail for the night.

Eventually after about 2 hours of torture and harassment after my mom had started crying they let me go .. and my mom crying they go on to say how much they pity her and have so much empathy for her for raising such a slt basically.

So yep that’s it. My mom’s been crying for hours.. imagine me. We left and I told her it was okay, I’d be fine. So she’s crying because she cannot believe the way they tortured me. That’s it. The end. The worst day of my entire life.

Anyways all I have to say on the matter is this; please try to refrain from wearing anything revealing because I wouldn’t want what happened to me to happen to anyone else. Save yourselves this is the real Swaziland and there’s absolutely nothing you can do to them.

This thread is to just raise awareness otherwise there’s nothing I can do to them. We are nothing to these people, we have no rights so just live with that planted in your head. Trying to go against them could potentially lead to death even.

They even brought up that lady that was harassed in Manzini by taxi men and basically said it was her fault so if the same thing were to happen to me I’d come running to them and annoy them. Yoh.

The police that was leading this animosity has been identified as Bheki, on of the notorious and corrupt cop in the country.

What King Mswati could have learned from Inkhosikati LaMbikiza’s father Rev.Mngomezulu.

BY ZWELI MARTIN DLAMINI
Swaziland News, 02 March 2022

One day Inkhosikati LaMbikiza’s father Rev. Percy Mngomezulu arrived at my church, the Africa Evangelical Church(AEC)Ezulwini, took a chair and sat among ordinary members.
No one knew there was a high profile person linked to royalty among us until our Pastor noticed him.
Rev.Mngomezulu by virtue of being the father to Inkhosikati Sibonelo Mngomezulu known as LaMbikiza was a very powerful and influential person in the country, he was once appointed an Ambassador by his son-in law King Mswati.
But what triggered me to write this article was his humbleness that I witnessed and wished if Mswati behaved like him, he could have long listened to the people who are demanding democracy.
After noticing that Rev. Mngomezulu was inside the church building, my Pastor Rev. Amos Matsentjwa sounded shocked by what appeared to be a surprise visit and that we had a high profile guest among us.
The old man walked slowly as senior members of the church ushered him to sit on the first table, the praise team welcomed him with a song and the service continued.
Now, here is the lesson, when Rev.Mngomezulu entered the church, he knew that he was the King’s father-in law and a very influential person in the country, but opted to behave like an ordinary citizen.
After being given the platform to address the church, he preached the word of God, he never boasted about his royal connection and you could hear from his speech after the sermon that the old man was humble and was not faking it.
The tendency by King Mswati to remind Swazis that he is the King and everything within the country belongs to him undermines his integrity as a Head of State.
Being a public figure or a person who holds a position of authority means you must at all times, reduce yourself to the level of the people whom you lead, the people must actively engage with you.
Mswati elevated himself far above the people such that any citizen who wanted to meet him was forced to pay a cow to meet the King.
As a public figure, sometimes you may feel like you have money and power and then start undermining the people but the truth is, power is centered around how people respect and endorse you as their leader.
It’s natural for the people to choose their leader, they may decide to follow and respect an ordinary citizen, a public transport worker, a journalist, a political activist and a health volunteer among others and that individual will subsequently become powerful more than the King.
It is important for Mswati to know that people don’t follow leaders with no mistakes and scandals but they want a leader who always acknowledge his mistakes and apologises to them as a demonstration of respect.
It is surprising that Mswati is behaving in this manner yet he was once surrounded by people like Rev. Mngomezulu who could have advised him on how to behave like a leader.
After visiting my church, I then met Rev. Mngomezulu at the entrance at Corner Plaza and greeted him, he shook my hands even though he didn’t know me.
“Kodvwa ungubani wena ndvodzana?” he asked.
I was shocked that such a man, a father-in law to the King just stopped to speak to another human being unknown to him in a polite manner.
Everytime, I feel like pride is overcoming me, I always think about the character of the late Rev. Percy Mngomezulu whose humility influenced some of us even though we met him for a few hours.
May King Mswati adopt the characters of a leader, humble himself before the Nation and facilitate a genuine political dialogue that seeks to restore peace and stability in this country.

Contract teachers to go home with nothing, Government fails to pay Provident Fund contributions.

BY NOKWANDA MAMBA
Swaziland News, 02 March 2022

MBABANE: Contract teachers who have been in the service for many years will go home without benefits since Government doesn’t pay their provident fund contributions.
Eswatini Government is accused of flouting labour laws by failing to pay provident fund contributions for contract teachers, resulting in hundreds of them going home without benefits despite being in service for many years.
Speaking to this Swaziland News,Sikelela Dlamini, the Secretary General of the Swaziland National Association of Teachers(SNAT) condemned the act adding that they were already working on it as a union.
“We will force Government to pay provident fund contributions for our members. For now, there’s the 13th cheque which is the same as gratuity but we want Government to enforce both”, said the SNAT Secretary General .
Lady Howard Mabuza, the Minister of Education had not responded to our questions at the time of compiling this report.
Sithembile Dlamini* one of the affected contract teachers revealed that she has been employed as a contract teacher for over ten(10)years but she would leave the profession without any terminal benefits despite serving the Government for so long.
“What's even more painful is that I’m earning half of what I'm supposed to earn.As a Diploma holder I’m supposed to be earning around E10 000.00 but since I'm on contract I'm earning a paltry E 5000.00”said the affected teacher.
