2023 World Bowls Indoor Championships
Warilla Bowls & Recreation Club, NSW
Day 1:

Five teams from the UK are amongst the eight qualifiers for tomorrow's world indoor mixed pairs championship quarter finals at Australia's Warilla Bowls & Recreation Club.
Impressive from the outset on Day 1 were defending singles champions Mike Stepney and Julie Forrest from Scotland who completed their schedule unscathed, as did fellow UK combinations Malcolm De Sousa and Megan Kivlin from Jersey along with Daniel Salmon and Amy Williams representing Wales, while England stars Martin Puckett and Kirsty Hembrow plus Guernsey's Ian and Alison Merrien both had a tiebreak blemish but still managed to secure a berth in the quarters.
Hats off to the youthful Malta duo of Troy Lorimer and Connie Rixon who outgunned the crack South African team of Colleen Piketh and Wayne Rittmuller in the final round and gain promotion to tomorrow's play-offs, while Namibia's Petronella Breedt and Carel Olivier were steady throughout their three starts to emerge as Africa's top hope in the mixed event.
Australian internationals Kelsey Cottrell and Aron Sherriff justified their warm local favouritism by handing in four winning cards and only allowing their opponents a total of 24 shots.
