I hate to admit this but letting Luka go is the best solution for the club going forward.
If you look at it in a sporting sense, we have players who can carry the ball, who can play between the lines. The profile we don’t have, is Kroos’ playing profile. Kroos being the regista with two/three young midfielders who can run the whole game makes much more sense than playing Modric with youngsters or playing both Kroos and Modric together. For that reason, I would rather offer Kroos a contract renewal than Modric. Also keep in mind that Kroos is a few years younger than Modric, and is still at the top of his game.
Modric also happens to be one of the highest earning players in the squad (and rightly so). From a business perspective, it makes sense to free up his wages.
The only thing I’m sad about is not letting him go last summer. He had good offers on the table from Saudi, so we should have let him go like Karim so he could make some big money playing in a more relaxing league. He decided to stay with us and fight for his spot and the club decided to bench him. Which I understand is not fair for a legend, but the club and the management is only doing whats best for the club.
At the end of the day the reality is Real Madrid is not a place where legends retire. Most legends leave this club a little bit hurt, I would say. But almost all of them return as ambassadors or only have good words for the club as time passes. It will be the same with Modric.
I love Luka Modric. In fact, my youngest pet is named after him. He is without any doubt, one of the biggest legends to have played for this club. But I’m with the club on letting him go. All good things must eventually come to an end.
Whatever happens, we will always miss Lukita like we miss all our old legends.
