Again, completion date for 2nd Niger Bridge shifted to 2024.

COMPLETION date for the multi billion naira 2nd Niger Bridge linking Delta and Anambra states has again been shifted from the earlier scheduled date of October, 2022 to the first quarter of 2024.

The implication of this is that President Muhammadu Buhari, whose administration started the construction of the bridge five years ago, would not be in office to commission it as his tenure would end in May, 2023.

The Acting Federal Controller of Works in Anambra State, Mr. Seyi Martins, who hinted of the new completion date however said work on the bridge had reached 95 per cent completion.

Martins, who spoke when members of the Council for Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) toured the bridge said the first phase of the project, which was the bridge proper, has substantially been completed.

According to him, what was remaining was the final asphalt surfacing on the Asaba end carriageway lane.
He said the asphalt wearing course had been fully laid on the Anambra end carriageway lane, just as other fittings, including the streetlights, the handrails, and the parapet wall had been completed.

Martins said the bridge, which is about 1.7km parallel to the existing bridge, was a dual carriageway with three lanes on both sides measuring about 1.6km in length, while the total length of the project was 11.9km.
He also informed the COREN members that the steel guard rails were complete and that the bridge was set for vehicular traffic.

He stated further that the toll plaza area was almost completed, adding that what was left was the installation of toll booth canopies.

He said: “The bridge project was expected to be delivered by the end of December 2022, but there is a second phase which is a 3.3km road approach on the Delta side and 7km of approach road on the Anambra side that is yet to commence.
“But the government has deemed it fit that upon completion of the first phase, it will be open to traffic.
“At the Onitsha end, there is an interchange at Oba, where motorists can access the bridge, while at the Asaba end, there is a link road we are constructing to enable travellers to access the bridge from Benin-Onitsha road”.

The Controller added that the bridge could be accessed from the interchange being constructed at Oba on the Onitsha-Owerri road to connect traffic on the Asaba-Benin expressway pending the completion of the second phase.

Peter Obi showers praise on baby who joined rally

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has hailed the little girl, Chioma, who was spotted at one of the rallies by his supporters on Saturday.

Little Chioma was seen walking with the crowd before being lifted high and then she took to dancing, a move which cheered the crowd.

In a viral video of the baby girl shared on Sunday, Peter Obi reiterated that the attempt to “take Nigeria back” is for Chioma and other babies.

He said, “The fight to take Nigeria back is for the sake of this little girl, Chioma, and for the sake of every Nigerian child - Amina, Yinka, Akpan, Abdul, Asake- including the unborn children. Chioma is now the poster child of this seminal campaign and process of national rebirth. I salute her passion and innocent gravitas. -PO”

NDLEA Arrests Another Billionaire Drug Baron In Lagos, Recovers N8.8bn Worth Of Tramadol

No less than Thirteen Million, Four Hundred and Fifty One Thousand, Four Hundred and Sixty Six (13,451,466) pills of Tramadol 225mg worth Eight Billion Eight Hundred and Sixty Million Naira (N8,860,000,000) in street value have been recovered by operatives of the National Drug Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, from one of the mansions of a billionaire drug baron, Ugochukwu Nsofor Chukwukadibia, in the highbrow residential estate, Victoria Garden City, Lekki area of Lagos.

The arrest of Ugochukwu who is the Chairman of Autonation Motors Ltd is coming barely two months after NDLEA uncovered a methamphetamine clandestine laboratory in the residence of another drug kingpin in the estate, Chris Emeka Nzewi, who was arrested on Saturday 30th July along with a chemist, Sunday Ukah, who cooked the illicit drug for him.

At least, 258.74 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine and various precursor chemicals used for the production of the toxic drug were recovered from Nzewi’s home during his arrest.

Following credible intelligence, NDLEA operatives on Friday 30th September stormed the Plot A45 Road 2 home of the 52-year-old billionaire drug kingpin. A search of the expansive mansion led to the discovery of 443 cartons of Tramadol Hydrochloride 225mg, which contains 13, 451, 466 pills of the drug while some cartons were already burnt in a fire incident in the house same day.

Before his arrest, Ugochukwu who hails from Ihiala local government area of Anambra state has been on the Agency’s watch list as one of those behind the tramadol drug cartel in Nigeria. Preliminary investigation shows that he has about six mansions within the VGC, one of which he uses to warehouse the tramadol consignment, while he lives in the one at Plot Z-130 Road 67 and another as his office. Five exotic vehicles have also been located in two of his mansions, out of which two SUVs including a bullet jeep have been successfully removed to the Agency’s facility.

Reacting to the latest drug haul, Chairman/Chief Executive of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd) commended the officers and men involved in the operation for their diligence while also appreciating Nigerians for supporting the Agency in its arduous task of ridding the country of the menace of drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking.

According to him, “I’ll like to reassure Nigerians and other stakeholders wherever they are located across the country and beyond of our preparedness to work with them on this onerous task of saving our people from the drug scourge. This partnership is a further warning to the drug barons and cartels that there is no hiding place for them anymore, because we remain on their trail and we’ll always get them.”

A former Minister of Education Oby Ezekwesili has rated Labour Party (LP)’s Peter Obi higher than other leading presidential candidates for the 2023 election.

While featuring as a guest on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Ezekwesili said the former Anambra governor possesses what others do not have even though the country suffers from poor leadership.

“Somebody says to you between a cast of possible presidents that include the three frontrunners that we currently have – a possible President Tinubu, Atiku, and Obi – do you need anybody to tell you where you would be going? It would be an Obi.”

While lamenting about the current political order to which she said the Labour Party flagbearer belongs, Ezekwesili rates Obi higher than other top candidates.

“Regardless of the fact that he comes from that particular political class that we are talking about, he still at least represents many more shapes than the other two top candidates (in reference to Atiku and Tinubu,” she added.

Obi’s support base is made up of largely young people, a development the former minister said shows the dynamics of Nigeria’s politics have changed.

She also pinned Nigeria’s major problem on leadership, saying the country has recorded stunted growth due to this. But she believes the current political awakening in the country, especially among youths, will alter the landscape.

“Sometimes, I just imagine what leadership will be in the country if they just listened (to youths),” she noted.

According to her, the zeal shown by young people during the protest is a poster of what youths can achieve.

Her comment came barely a day after Obi’s supporters marched in several parts of the country to rally support for the Labour Party flagbearer.

The rally took place in Lagos, Edo State, Delta, Kaduna, other states across Nigeria, and in London, the United Kingdom.
