🐝 Here are 7 ways to make your garden more bee-friendly 🌸

🎉 AND HERE'S SOME BIG BOOK NEWS 📚

We're a month away from printing Do You Speak Bee? For all of May, pre-orders are 30% off on the Oak Tree Comics website:

https://www.oaktreecomics.com/pre-order

💚 HOW DO PRE-ORDERS HELP OUR SMALL BUSINESS AND THE ENVIRONMENT? 💚

1️⃣ For every book we print, we're donating a dollar to the for Wild Flowers and Native Plants.

2️⃣ When you pre-order, you help us plan how many books to print. That helps us reduce the risk of books going to waste.

3️⃣ Certain environmental printing options are only available to larger print orders. Pre-orders help empower our small business with the ability to choose what materials our books are made from.

Our goal is to get 500 pre-orders. If we meet our goal, we will print 750 books. 500 books will be going to homes from the get-go while the remaining 250 are how many we can responsibly predict we will sell in the course of a year by going to local events.

Thanks for helping us in our goal of making our publishing more sustainable. The team and I couldn't BEE more appreciative 🙏💚

🌟 Did you know blue whales once had legs? Once upon a time, they walked on land, but thanks to millions of years of evolution, their legs disappeared. They now have a vestigial pelvis with leg bones. They may no longer be able to walk, but they're the largest animal to EVER exist. A blue whale's tongue weighs as much as an ELEPHANT, and they can eat up to eight thousand pounds of krill in one day! 🌟

🎉 CREATIVE LIFE UPDATE 🎉

Some of you may have seen that I have 3 new books (!!!) coming out in the fall, and many of you have even already pre-ordered them, which I'm beyond thankful for!

(To read about or to pre-order the books, you can here: www.oaktreecomics.com/pre-order )

It's fast approaching four years now that I've been doing this whole independent publishing thing. It was peak pandemic when I switched gears from freelance screenwriting to children's book publishing. After years of writing other people's stories, I wanted to create stories that would speak to the values that I wanted to put out in the world.

So that's how Oak Tree Comics came to be. It was and is my sanctuary where I explore my identity to environmentalism through an imaginative and optimistic lens.

I guess what you can't see in this post's smiley photo and what I don't usually share around are the challenges of independent publishing. The logistics of how to get my books to readers can feel like a daunting catch-22.

The traditional publishing route of agents and an established distribution network has yet to open itself to me, and I've come to realize that's a-okay.

I do what I do because I love it. Seeing how my stories inspires readers inspires me to keep going.

So, if you've enjoyed my books before, here's my plan for how I'm hoping to get my newest ones to you:

Instead of running a Kickstarter and dealing with its pitfalls, I see an opportunity for innovation that addresses an environmental problem and that will help me to continue making my books.

The environmental problem boils down to an overarching problem with capitalism. Due to an economy of scale, books become more affordable to publishers when they order more, so publishers tend to order larger quantities than they might need or sell. The result is 160,000 trucks filled with unread books that go to landfill every year, or ten million trees.

Traditionally, the saying goes "SUPPLY and demand."

Whether it's books or anything else you buy, someone somewhere uses their best instincts to decide how many of something to create. A lot of it is guesswork.

So I want to reverse the saying and make it "DEMAND and supply?" You say whether you want something. Then I can provide just the right amount, so there's less waste.

From April through June, the Oak Tree Comics team and I are running a pre-order campaign embracing this idealistic idea. Our goal is to get 500 pre-orders for each of our three new books.

If we succeed and get 500 pre-orders, we will print 750 books because 250 is how many I know I can sell by going to book festivals in a year.

Now, let's say the best case scenario rolls in, Oprah sponsors Oak Tree Comics, and we get 1,000,000 pre-orders! In that awesome scenario, we'd still print 250 more books than the total number of pre-orders. Because 250 books is how many I know I can sell in a year. That way every book will have a home and, hopefully, no book will go to waste.

To incentivize readers to get onboard with this newfangled idea, I'm offering 40% off for pre-orders in April, 30% off in May, and 20% off in June 💚

If we don't reach our goal, or you don't want a physical book, that's a-okay, too. I'm just glad I got to share my story with you, so thanks for reading and thanks for championing Oak Tree Comics these past few years!

You can collect 30 of our Weird Animals as compostable stickers and learn more about all 52 of them on our TikTok.

Happy Sleipnark Awareness Day! 🦈 A day to recognize the importance of these deeply misunderstood but absolutely fascinating creatures.

The sleipnark is one half horse, one half great white shark, one half eight-legged spider.

Despite their reputation as being the thing of your nightmares, as apex predators they play an essential role to the health of marine ecosystems world-wide.

Sadly, they face numerous existential threats including overfishing for their fins, habitat degradation due to climate change, accidental bycatch in fishing nets and, sometimes, they also get caught and cannibalized within their own horse-spider webs, but that’s really their problem. Again what a fascinating species!

Protecting the sleipnark means protecting marine ecosystems across the world. So let’s spread awareness about this beautiful creature!

✨To learn even more about the sleipnark, check out our story and Oak Tree Comics’ TikTok where we’ve been combining mythical creatures with endangered species. This combo combined the sleipnir (an eight-legged horse ridden by Odin in Norse mythology) with the great white shark.
