Today, I had the opportunity to attend the screening of Mentai-piriri (めんたいぴりり), hosted by the as part of their February Weekend Japanese Film Show. Directed by EGUCHI Kan, this film tells the heartwarming and funny story of a businessman who helped make mentaiko (spicy cod roe) a popular dish in Japan. It also won the Best Action Film award at the 23rd Fantasia International Film Festival for The Fable.
The story follows Toshiyuki, the main character, who uses his memories of the taste of myeongnan-jeot (Korean spicy cod roe) to perfect the flavor of mentaiko. His journey is about more than just business success—it’s about his passion for food and his dedication to sharing something he loves with others.
Throughout the film, there are plenty of laughs, with comedic moments that make it feel light and fun. The side characters also bring their own humor and charm, adding extra layers to the story. Each of these characters plays a part in the overall plot, making the film feel rich and full of life.
What I really appreciated was how the film balanced humor with a meaningful message about passion and perseverance. Even though the movie is funny and lighthearted, it shows how Toshiyuki’s love for mentaiko helps him connect with others and ultimately brings happiness to everyone around him. The story wraps up with a satisfying and positive conclusion, leaving you with a warm feeling.
Overall, Mentai-piriri is a fun, uplifting film about following your passion and appreciating the small things. Whether you’re a fan of Japanese films or just enjoy a good story, this one is definitely worth watching.
