Did you know day to day I'm a business consultant?
I made this workbook which I thought some of you might like - head below to check it out :)

One of the common obstacles I see business owners facing is a lack of time or structure around reviewing performance at different levels within the business, and leveraging that insight to drive activity and objectives. They are excellent at what they do, but easily get bogged down in the day-to-day

Success: The accomplishment of an aim or goal.

Wealth: An abundance of valuable possessions or money.

Two very different things.

Tall Poppy Syndrome exists with success.

It is not about wealth.

Yes, wealth can come with certain types of success.

But success can be:
- Gaining a qualification
- Passing an exam
- Losing some of that weight youā€™ve been trying so hard to
- Meeting your dream partner
- Getting out of bed in the morning
- Overcoming addiction

Tall Poppy Syndrome exists:
- In the sporting world
- In our schools
- Among groups of friends
- In the media
- In the workplace

We canā€™t teach old dogs new tricks.

So we need to focus on teaching our young people the meaning of success, how valuable they are as individuals, and how to stay strong when theyā€™re alienated for it.

The people whoā€™ve called me a parasitic paper shuffler or show-off wa**er following the article written about me on this day last year probably hadnā€™t seen all my content designed to do just that - and probably still haven't.

They're the old dogs who generally won't be open to learning new tricks.

And even though Tall Poppy Syndrome is about success, Iā€™m still glad that article played on the wealth angle.

Not because I love receiving hideous messages, but because it drew attention, and made others with much louder voices than mine speak up about the perils of success at all levels in New Zealand, and how urgently we need to address them.

My nephew is nearly 9 and at age 7 he told me he Googled me. He said he saw me in a Zoom meeting which looked really boring. šŸ˜‚

But if he Googled me again now heā€™d see people saying really horrible things about his Aunty.

What an abysmal message to send our already-burdened kids.

And unfortunately, I've not really seen it improve.

Heck, we even had a press release come out of the Beehive (!!) recently, citing carefully manipulated numbers which caused a slew of hate against some of our country's most successful individuals.

Please support anyone you see trying to change the narrative around success in New Zealand.

I know Iā€™m not the only one determined to succeed at making a difference, and that's why this podcast exists.

Letā€™s explore the true meaning of success šŸ”„

Itā€™s essential to define success based on personal goals and achievements, NOT material possessions and wealth alone, if you want to feel truly fulfilled and content.

You might think wtf - why is she saying this when sheā€™s got stupidly expensive cars in the garage? But those of you whoā€™ve followed me for a while will know that the true meaning of success is something I talk very openly about, as I try to bust the myths that get shoved down our throats online.

In the episode I discuss overcoming challenges and learning from those experiences to find happiness and satisfaction in the pursuit of success, with some personal experiences thrown in for good measure.
I also go into the importance of providing value and contributing meaningfully to others' lives as a key aspect of success for me and how I worked that out.

Join me as we redefine what success truly means and how to achieve it in a way that aligns with YOUR own values and aspirations.

Let's talk the often-misunderstood and criticized Generation Z.

Their lives are much easier than many previous generations due to the technology, connectivity, and instant gratification they have access to. So why is it sometimes harder for them? And if you're Gen Z - why does it sometimes feel harder for you?

In last weekā€™s podcast episode I answer those questions and explain how by approaching goals with effort and value, Gen Z can alleviate the worry and anxiety about what direction their life might be taking, as well as how older generations can learn from Gen Z, appreciate them, and finally get off the anti-Gen-Z bandwagon šŸ™Œ

Honestly, Gen Z is impressing me so much again.

I don't care what other people might say about them being disengaged or lazy.

You can be disengaged and lazy at any age!

I spoke to a 24 year-old woman the other week who's running a "side hustle" business alongside her 9 to 5.

A friend of hers is on my online consulting group for his own engineering business, and he kindly gifted her a 1 on 1 session with me that he won in a competition I ran over Christmas.

She totally had her wits about her around the pricing of her product, where the majority of her sales came from, and actively took notes throughout our session of the suggestions I made to help take her business from side-hustle to full-time.

24 hours later she'd already started implementing them.

You can be sharp and onto it at any age too.

I'm excited to watch the Gen Z's who are.

And even more excited to support them.

I hope you love the episode and find it insightful. You know where to find it šŸ˜‰

Is anti-hustle culture destroying your dreams and success? In this episode, I discuss the origins of hustle culture, how technology and social media have contributed to its arise, and the negative impacts of hustle culture, such as fear, guilt, and shame. But is Anti-Hustle culture an excuse not to work hard enough?

What do you think?

Another weird week of trying to keep on keeping on yet while you watch your country being virtually destroyed.

I live in central Auckland in an apartment building. All I had to worry about on Sunday was making sure my boyfriend had brought the cushions in from the deck.

It would have probably been a different story for me if I still had the house I did 5 years ago, on top of an exposed ridge.

To those of you who have been affected by the cyclone (and everything else over the last 3 weeks):

Please know that those of us who havenā€™t directly been affected feel your pain, as much as we can without going through that devastation first hand.

I personally feel helpless and I know many others do too.

Itā€™s another blow to many small businesses as well.

Yesterday I spoke to a business owner in Browns Bay whoā€™d lost a lot in the Anniversary weekend floods.

And on Tuesday we chose not to cancel the reservations we had at a local family restaurant, since they were still open and very close to our home.

We chose it because when we walk past on any given evening itā€™s always PACKED (and smells delicious).

Valentineā€™s Day, whether you love it or lump it, is a great day for hospo businesses, but the first thing I commented was how quiet it seemed.

Not ideal after a tough few years.

So here we are, keeping on keeping on I guess, but not without being very aware of whatā€™s going on in the lives of many other Kiwis.

30/01/2023

I donā€™t really know what to say about the Auckland floods and other terrible weather events and slips and such around NZ, but I feel like I need to say something. I live in a high rise, the elevators are out due to water in the shafts, itā€™s 3 days of stairs so far. Canā€™t complain obviously, but that makes it difficult for the elderly and disabled in the building. Somehow I feel this photo of me today in my boyfriendā€™s old tshirt and trackies Iā€™ve had for at least 12 years just sums up how many of us less-affected are feeling. Sort of just keeping on keeping on, seeing what the next day will bring and hoping itā€™s not round 2 for everyone who lost their homes on Friday.

And yes, sometimes I look like this. Especially on public holidays šŸ˜…

Every experience teaches us things about ourselves we can draw from in the future.

I wasn't an amazing kart racer, but I was good enough to make Nationals.

Racing gave me discipline, focus, and level-headedness which have continued to help me throughout my career.

You kinda need those qualities when you're blasting along at 150km/h with your bum a few cm off the ground, deciding whether to pass someone šŸ˜…

But I've actively continued to foster those qualities in myself as an individual too, because I know how important they are not just in business, but in an enjoyable, balanced, happy life as well.

They're 3 qualities I encourage in the people I mentor.

What qualities do you most value in yourself?

13/01/2023

I wanna shout out to all the early 20-somethings trying to make a go of things in 2023.

I donā€™t care what my generation or older generations say - being that age these days or any days is bloody hard.

A guy in his early 20s who Iā€™d never spoken to before booked a call with me which we had on Tuesday. Heā€™s already running a business, and at that age it can be a lonely journey, especially when youā€™ve chosen a route different to all your mates whoā€™ve gone to uni.

Heā€™s out there trying to figure it all out at the same time as just trying to navigate what can be a clusterf*** of an age to be, and I believe heā€™s got the ability to smash his goals.

So this post is for those of you who are out there trying to do something or make something while being an early 20-something year old. It might feel like your life is a bit messy, like you donā€™t know what the f*** youā€™re doing or who you are, or what way is up, down or sideways.

I see you, and youā€™re doing great.

24 year old me survived on wine and Georgie Pie, and I did OK.

Progress is not always comfortable.

Iā€™m the un-fittest Iā€™ve been since 2019, partly thanks to surgeries in 2020, 2021 and 2022, and partly thanks to Covid.

I am physically weak and wonky, but realised on Tuesday just how mentally strong I am.

Despite feeling a bit flat and with a bit of a headache, I managed this steep 4.4km walk, huffing and puffing a bit more than Iā€™m used to, pushing all the way to the top and telling myself ā€œI can do itā€. (Being responsible of course, ready to turn around if I felt any pain in my surgery site)

And I did do it! Itā€™s not much, but just like the walk in Coromandel, itā€™s another step; another mental hurdle. I even ran for a bit on the way down šŸ˜Ž

I didnā€™t just wake up one day with the mental strength to push through discomfort though. It takes practice, self-assurance and perseverance to cultivate a strong mind that can withstand the challenges life throws at us in the 21st century.

I canā€™t wait to share more about what Iā€™ve done to get to this point when my podcast re-launches in a few weeks šŸ„µ Head to https://youtube.com/ to subscribe to my YouTube channel and be the first to see the new episodesā€¦ and the new, FINAL name!

02/12/2022

Ok this came up on my memories from 4 years ago today and I couldnā€™t not repost it šŸ˜‚

Iā€™ll use it to share an important message though.

Thereā€™s something I often say to people who are beating themselves up about feeling s**tty about something, because other people are in worse situations.

And usually yes, there is pretty much always someone worse off if youā€™re in the first world.

But that doesnā€™t mean you canā€™t feel crappy about something thatā€™s going on in your life or a situation you find yourself in!

The same goes for the opposite.

Just as anyoneā€™s allowed to feel crappy from time to time despite what other people are enduring, anyoneā€™s allowed to feel happiness, humour and joy, too!

Some people view some of the things I share as showing off, ā€œflexingā€ or even making me ā€œtone deafā€ or ā€œout of touchā€.

Of course the reality for me is thatā€™s never the case, and my life just is what it is - I simply share what Iā€™m up to, the things that make me laugh and smile, as well as some of the lowlights, all while hoping to make a positive difference.

The hardship of the last few years has almost taught us we arenā€™t allowed to be happy and celebrate, because of what others might be going through.

But itā€™s not illegal to smile, or to celebrate the wins, or make people laugh by doing stupid outlandish things. Iā€™d argue we need more of it to help lift the spirits of others!

Life is life. Weā€™re all here for a short time. So feel all the feelings, the good and the bad, and donā€™t be afraid to feel the way you want to.

Youā€™ve got my permission.

(Not that you need it.)

16/03/2022

Iā€™m really concerned about the mental state of young people in NZ right now.

In the last week or so Iā€™ve spent some time on TikTok for the first time really since we had our Delta lockdown in August, and there are 2 really obvious things standing out to me:

1) The vibe on there is WAY different. Initially I picked up on it from scrolling. Today I picked up on it from comments on a video I shared.

2) There are heaps of young women sharing ā€œhaulsā€ of stuff theyā€™ve bought, and not really talking about much else, like how they afford it. I get the impression really young women are feeling FOMO from this kind of content.

In this pic Iā€™m by that article of me with my cars in the paper the other day, and some eagle-eyed gals and guys reading this might notice my belt or my sunnies or my watch.

But what I make an effort to share is that life can be really f**king good without all that stuff.

If youā€™re reading this and youā€™ve looked at someone like me and felt inspired, I love that! But if youā€™ve felt bad for not having it - donā€™t. I promise you, your stuff doesnā€™t define you even though some people or brands will make you think it does, and you are good enough as you are.

And Afterpay payment reminders are not worth it.

If life is feeling hard right now, by all means share it on social media if you feel it will genuinely help - but I can almost guarantee a break from social media will feel better. Thatā€™s also something I do myself, and many of you know I take long breaks from responding to messages too šŸ˜…

Youā€™ve done amazing to survive the last two years, and I hope I can keep supporting, inspiring or championing you to keep going; to look to the sun outside when it seems cloudy in your head ā˜€ļø

06/03/2022

In my 20s I was so hard on myself.

I suppose I got some good results, but itā€™s a really unbalanced, unnatural way of existing.

When I quit work at 30, I started chilling out, giving less of a f***, and putting myself first. That wasnā€™t even intentional really, it just kind of happened.

Fast forward to 2022 where this weird virus called Covid-19 has entered my household, and shown me the true value of developing that habit.

Iā€™ve got a girlfriend who lives with me and she went down hard last Monday arvo. Iā€™d been feeling tired and throughout the week I was looking after her, at one point on the phone to the ambulance, while continuing to feel a little run down but mostly just indescribably tired, no doubt while my body did its thing to protect me from the šŸ¦

On that Tuesday I canned most of my meetings for the week knowing Iā€™d not be feeling mentally sharp and chucked an OOO on my email to say that I was in isolation, and would take longer to respond than usual.

20-something me wouldnā€™t have done that.

She would have pushed through and been pi**ed off at herself had she not put everyone else first.

But in some ways I was, because it meant I could rush to my friendā€™s bedside and put HER first, whenever I heard the ā€œhelp, I canā€™t breathe againā€.

What have I learnt from putting myself first over the last three years though?

- When we go easier on ourselves, things flow.
- We reduce subconscious stress which has a physical impact.
- People respect our boundaries more because we donā€™t just have them, but exercise them.
- We achieve more.
- We natural end up prioritising the things that are truly important in this physical life.

Learning to let go a little is really hard for some people and Iā€™ve coached a lot of over-achievers on this, who tend to berate themselves for pausing when their gutā€™s telling them they need to.

Iā€™ll share some of my tips in the comments.

Success can be alienating.

I experienced it as a kid, and again in my early adulthood as my career - and perceived wealth as a result of that - took off.

Youā€™d think in this day and age, with how connected we are to other people and the world, it would be less of a problem - but I still regularly have people, particularly those in their 20s, reach out to me and ask how Iā€™ve dealt with feeling alienated in the past.

There are a few techniques and things to know which can help - like taking solace in the fact that most people who look to you as someone whoā€™s more successful than them, will literally have no idea about the different types of problems to theirs that you may face as a result of it.

Or, that there are others further ahead than you, with a seat for you at their table.

28/02/2022

Be mindful of what you mentally consume, for two reasons.

1. The information we take in determines our thoughts, and our thoughts become our reality.
2. It takes time to consume information, and our time is limited!

People often observe I seem like a happy person.

People also often observe I achieve a s**tload.

And I 100% am and do - but it's not by chance.

Firstly, I know what makes me happy. And many things do!

I also ruthlessly manage myself within the same 24 hours we're all given each day.

I haven't had a TV at home for four years now, and I only seek out news on current affairs that interest me or are important to me.

For example - yes, I check in most days to see how Covid is impacting our country, because it's relevant to me and impacts me and the people I care about.

But that's as far as it goes.

I've read a lot about what's going on in Ukraine, because I want to learn about the international politics around it, and am intrigued by the military, which was a foreign topic to me until getting together with someone who spent 15 years in it.

I've developed and practised the skill of being able to "scroll past".

I also preach that what we pay attention to is what grows.

I've got a lot of epic stuff going on at the moment - because I've consciously been focusing the last few months on having a super duper enjoyable year. And I want to feel happy! It's a choice we can all make. I've got my own crap going on too. But I've got my health, my family, and my mates. All other things I can put my attention to and cultivate happiness.

If you think to yourself "I'm sick of this drivel" or similar as you check your social media feeds, turn on the radio or switch TV channels, you can deploy the exact same tactics I do, to free up a little time, and feel a little happier (or sane.)

Things that, from my observation recently, a lot of people could do with šŸ˜Š

What would you do more of if you consumed less?

19/02/2022

In 2018 I moved from that house to that apartment.

I was tired of the excess - the excess care, the excess commuting, the excess footprint, and wanted to simplify my life.

People couldnā€™t comprehend why Iā€™d make the choice to downsize so considerably. After all, the bigger house with the Ferrari in the garage is what you do as you become more successful, right??

Simplicity is the secret to success. Simplicity opens up time for us to do the things that are truly important, that truly have an impact - whether in business or in our own lives.

Since then, Iā€™ve been able to lock up and travel overseas without thinking, reduce my environmental footprint, and not have to worry about getting a call to say Iā€™d been robbed - which happened twice in the 5 years I lived in the ā€œManukau Hiltonā€.

I got thinking about this downsize last week, when I decided to give notice on my office lease.

Unlike when I first started , it is now fully acceptable for a high-calibre professional services business to be based out of someoneā€™s home.

Iā€™m not aiming to grow a big, people-heavy, cumbersome business that makes simplicity impossible - so why complicate things?

Not only that, but the overheads Iā€™ve just eliminated, combined with the rental income Iā€™d get from the place I currently live in, would cover the mortgage payments on another property - which I can buy with the intention of setting up a super cool WFH space Iā€™d be happy to invite clients into for a coffee meeting.

How good is that?

Simplicity > Complexity.

Remove what you donā€™t need.

Go all in on the important stuff.

The results will convince you.
