In a stunning 180-degree energy policy reversal for the democratic party, on November 12, 2024, a week after the election, the Biden/Harris administration announced it is now welcoming nuclear power with open arms and announced a colossal nuclear power construction program as outlined in the press release below. Its goal is to build 200 GW (Gigawatts) of nuclear power by 2050 and thereby tripling the current nuclear power capacity. For reference, 1 GW equals 1,000 Megawatts (MW). The Seabrook power plant is 1,250 MW (1.25 GW) so the Biden Administration hopes the United States will build approximately 170 Seabrook sized nuclear power plants around the nation in the next 25 years. The nation now has 54 nuclear power plants with 94 individual reactors.

The election is finally over, and we have a new President-elect, Donald J. Trump. Personally, I’m elated. But many people who I know and care for are sincerely frightened. I feel for them, as the news has been hammering us with variations of “Trump is Hitler” since he first announced he was running for office, and if what they say is true then it logically follows that he is a clear and present danger.

For homeowners in Portsmouth opening their mail to find dramatically increased valuations and then a tax rate set to ensure a property tax hike, shock might be the best description of the impact on the entire household. The average residential valuation increase is 65% since the last assessment in 2019. I still own the house bought by my parents, during my lifetime, in this city…and this latest tax hike means that I will pay more in annual taxes than the original purchase price!

After an incredible 30-year saga summarized in the tortuous chronology below, the long-suffering residents of Pannaway Manor and the Jewels neighborhoods on the west side of I-95 may soon be seeing sound wall construction begin. The Governor and Council are scheduled to vote on approving the $18.8 million dollar construction contract to Northeast Earth Mechanics on Wednesday, September 25, 2024 at their meeting to be held this month in Hollis, NH.

If residents of these neighborhoods are wishing to know whom to thank for finally sealing the deal on this project or just looking to expand their Christmas card mailing list, one can start with former Portsmouth City Councilor Esther Kennedy, former Portsmouth Mayor Rick Becksted, District 3 Executive Councilor Janet Stevens and Pannaway Manor homies Bill St. Laurent and Erik Anderson.
