Congratulations to Katy Bowman – Grow Wild has been nominated for “Book of the Year” Award in the Family & Relationships category.

This is a must-read book for anyone dealing with children-rich spaces and has been called “the antidote to so much screen time.” Kids need a ton of movement, but this need doesn’t have to be stressful, it can be joyful and efforts here can benefit your entire family and greater community.

Five years ago I could barely walk outside barefoot.

That's me, , there at the bottom.

and I just walked around the block barefoot, something that would have been unheard of a few years ago for me.

Like most people, I'd lived in shoes, inside and outside the house, since I was a kid.

I'd suffered from plantar fasciitis, painful calluses, and ingrown toenails.

And even in the summer, on beach trips, I still had to wear shoes because everything hurt.

Shoes all day, with little exposure to natural surfaces, had left my feet so sensitive to anything that wasn't a shoe was super painful.

I'd already read several of Katy Bowman / 's books, but it wasn't until I embraced her book, Whole Body Barefoot, that I saw (or felt) big changes.

Today, my feet are pain free, I have arches again, I'm over 12 years free from plantar fasciitis, I can hike all day in minimal sandals, even on sharp lava rock!

Heck, even my 'dress shoes' and snow boots are minimal.

Whole Body Barefoot not only change my feet, but changed my life.

I highly recommend this book.

Sometimes things are TOO convenient...

Hi, here.

I'm the author of Eat Well, Move Well, Live Well, and I wanted to share one of the most powerful changes I've made to my body over the years.

And it's an easy one.

I stopped trying to make movement more convenient.

It started when I realized that going the long way gave me more steps on my Fitbit, but then I started reading books by Katy Bowman / and things really started to change.

I used to wish for the right tool to make dusting easier.

I wanted a long handled duster so I didn't have to squat, stand on my toes, reach, or go get a stool.

But, after reading Katy's books, I realized that the wrong tool might be the best tool for my body.

Squatting, reaching, moving more, and moving differently are all things we should be doing daily.

We do these things to make sure our bodies are ABLE to do those things.

Yes, special tools that make things easier are sometimes necessary, but if you don't NEED it, don't use it.

Once you realize that a variety of movements, even awkward ones, have benefits, you'll stop wishing for the easy tools.

Use the tools you have to move more and move better, and keep yourself able to do that for years to come.

And if you want a great book to help keep you moving and aging well, I highly recommend Dynamic Aging.

Many shops have a gift-book section, but what I treasure are specialty shops that know in and out the book titles that will resonate with their customers. I will share some examples in my town (and say a huge THANK YOU FOR CARRYING OUR BOOKS):

The Lakota seven sacred principles are posted on the wall of Doniga Markegard's kitchen, and every time they share a meal one of her children read at least one of the principles aloud. She said this helps her reflect on her own personal journey.

Markegard said while it’s hard to pick a favorite among the seven that the first one about inner quietness comes up first because she seeks to have that moment every day.
