RESPONSE FROM THE OFFICE OF THE STATE CHAIRMAN OF PDP, RIVERS STATE CHAPTER TO THE SPOKESPERSON OF ATIKU ABUBAKAR

The attention of the office of the State Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers State, His Excellency Ambassador Desmond Akawor has been drawn to media reports orchestrated by one Phrank Shaibu, spokesperson of the former Vice President of Nigeria, Alh. Atiku Abubakar alleging that the 2023 Presidential election for Rivers State was rigged to favor the incumbent President, Mr. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in exchange for a ministerial appointment to former Governor Nyesom Wike.

Rivers State PDP must warn mischief makers against subjecting the independence and sovereignty of a political party to the personal ambition of one man.

We find that the elections, though not without hitches, were a reflection of the wishes and desires of the good people of Rivers State. More importantly, we understand that a matter currently pending before the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal ought not to be decided by any individual other than the judicial umpires presiding over the matter.

We also wish to use this medium to state that the PDP family in Rivers state remains committed to the Nigerian vision, regardless of the pilot-in-charge of its affairs, hence, the partywelcomes any appointment of its party faithful, including former Governor Nyesom Wike by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We consider that in building a collective national dream in which all persons are represented and included, allegiance to the party, may not always override the attainment of National goals and interests.

Notwithstanding the above, we find it needful to inform the Nigerian public that the said spokesperson of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Phrank Shaibu cannot declare any election as rigged, not being a competent court of authority.

While we remain unwavering over our resolve to advocate for southern presidency, we urge Mr. Shaibu to take the task of advising his principal to abide by the caveat in the constitution of PDP which provides that zoning should be respected for the purpose of giving a sense of belonging to all members of the party and for all-inclusiveness.

The Rivers State PDP family also wishes to reiterate calls for unity and mutual respect among party members and leaders in other to build a more progressive political party as co-equal stakeholders in this political journey.

WIKE PRESENTS CERTIFICATE OF RECOGNITION TO OBA OF OGBALAND

Rivers State governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has presented certificate of recognition and Staff of office to His Royal Majesty (Dr.) Nwachukwu S. Obuoha as Obi III, Oba (Eze Ogba) of Ogbaland.

The brief presentation ceremony held at the Banquet Hall of Government House in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.

Governor Wike said the king was long recognised by the State government, the day he was coronated as Oba of Ogbaland.

He stated that the presentation event was mere ceremony to affirm what has been done.

Governor Wike charged the king to use the opportunity of being the traditional father over Ogbaland to foster unity, promote peace and harmony among his subjects.

The Rivers State governor noted that the throne, while the former King Chukumela Nnam Obi II was alive, commanded honour, respect and candour across Nigeria.

Governor Wike advised the king not to indulge in any act that will bring the throne to disrepute.

The governor also charged the Oba of Ogbaland to dissuade the youths in his domain from any act of violence that will disrupt the peace among the people and threaten economic activities in the area.

Governor Wike recalled the dark episode of 31st December 2017 breaking into 2018, when some youths under the guise of unknown gunmen killed innocent persons in Omoku, the headquarters of the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area.

Results of some of those criminal activities, governor Wike said scared off financial houses, and kill the bustling business climate there.

Governor Wike warned against any act that will return the area to such situation because the State government had done so much after then to restore peace.

The governor pointed to demands that youths put forward to operators of International Oil Companies (IOCs) and said it should be done in concert with his palace and the State government.

Such synergy, Governor Wike insisted will ensure that nobody takes the law into their hands, and the demands will be pursued to logical conclusion.

Governor Wike also berated those who have subjected the Eze Oba stool to litigation and attempting to bring it to disrespect.

The governor assured Eze Obuoha necessary support to ensure that the revered stool is not ridiculed.

In his speech, His Royal Majesty (Dr.) Nwachukwu S. Obuoha as Obi III, Oba (Eze Ogba) of Ogbaland said only God makes kings in Ogbaland, and he is grateful to be on the saddle to serve the land and its people faithfully.

HRM (Dr.) Obuoha thanked governor Wike for the support given to his family since their father died.

He also acknowledged the astute leadership governor Wike has provided the State by giving meaning to governance and made its fame to travel across the world.

ARIOLU COMMENDS NASS, KINGSLEY CHINDA FOR PASSAGE OF BILL TO CORRECT NAME OF OBIO/AKPOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA

The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Council, Barr George Ariolu, has commended the National Assembly for assenting to the bill to correct the spelling of name of the Local Government Area.

He also lauded the Lawmaker representing the LGA at the Federal Constituency in the Federal House of Representative for sponsoring the motion to correct the name from its former spelling, Obia/Akpor to Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

Ariolu stated this at the Council Headquarters in Rumuodomaya on Friday, while reacting to the bill recently signed by the National Assembly to correct the name of the LGA as captured in the federal government constitution of 1999.

The Chairman said the decision of the National Assembly to correct the name is a good development for the entire people of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Rivers State and Nigeria.

Recall, during the 7th Assembly of the House of Representatives and Senate, Hon. Chinda had moved a motion to effect a correction on the spelling of Obio/Akpor which was voted alongside 67 other amendments to the 1999 Constitution on Tuesday 1st of March, 2022 by Members of the National Assembly and subsequently passed as a bill on same day.

"I think it is a good news to hear that the National Assembly has voted for the correction of the name Obio/Akpor. That is a good news to hear. Like I have always said, what is important now is what do people want. The moment you do what the people want, you'll see happiness everywhere." He stated

"I see this as a welcome development for the people of Obio/Akpor and Rivers State. And I will urge the good people of our beloved LGA to embrace this changes, because it is for their own interest.”

“And I commend the Senate President and the Speaker, House of Representatives, all the principal officers and members who felt the importance of listening to what is good for the Citizens.”

Signed:
Hon. George Ariolu, Esq.

PDP'LL SUPPORT PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE WITH CAPACITY TO SALVAGE NIGERIA - WIKE

I WON’T IMPOSE MY SUCCESSOR

Governor of Rivers State, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike has explained that only a courageous person with the capacity and vision to salvage the country will be supported to fly the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general election.

He clarified that although the party is yet to decide whether such candidate will be from the southern or northern part of Nigeria, one thing is certain, the candidate will be one who can confront the evil tactics of All Progressives Congress, APC.

Speaking on African Independent Television, AIT, on Thursday, Governor Wike said the process to determine who PDP will field as its presidential candidate will be a turbulent one.

"Let nobody come and tell you that in arriving at a presidential candidate that it will be easy. No way, it can never be. You know, there are two types of turbulences. There is turbulence that will not have a crash, which is a normal turbulence. There are turbulences that there is likely to be a crash.

"Our own turbulence in PDP is the normal turbulence, which I believe we will get through it, but APC turbulence is a turbulence that is likely to lead to a crash.

"PDP has redeemed its position towards what Nigerians are expecting, because Nigerians are tired of what is going on in the country. So, they need an alternative, and the only alternative as it is today is the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP)."

Governor Wike said as a firm and courageous person, who having demonstrated such selfless leadership in Rivers State, he will only support a presidential candidate who will not mortgage the party for other selfish interest.

"And so, if you want to run for presidency under PDP, I will not support somebody who'll just want to bear the name of former presidential candidate, I will not agree to that. I must see that you are prepared for it, and to confront this evil called APC.”

Governor Wike boasted that he feels fulfilled that PDP got it right with a peaceful conduct of its national convention that saw the emergence of a new competent national working committee, (NWC).

He dismissed insinuations in some quarters that PDP governors had forced on an early convention because they wanted sole control of the party. According to him, any true party man will love a PDP that is stable, focus and forward looking.

The governor maintained that already the new leadership of the PDP, waiting to be sworn-in on the 9th December 2021, have started engaging Nigerians and other party members on identifying what the problems are and how to address them properly.

Governor Wike said Nigerians are tired of the misrule of APC and will not allow their evil to continue beyond 2023.

"Nigerians are waiting. Nigerians cannot have this type of evil come up again in 2023. We will be doing a disservice to Nigerians to allow this to continue."

He said PDP is already aware of the antics of the APC controlled Federal Government to ensure it holds on to power at all cost. According to him, APC is already gearing up to deplore unconstitutional means to frustrate the conduct of a free and fair 2023 general election.

Governor Wike expressed strong reservation on the likelihood of President Muhammadu Buhari ever assenting to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

“The president will not sign the Electoral Act Amendment Bill. The signs are already there. It is dead on arrival. The president does not disappoint people.”

He stated that the seemingly disagreement between members of the national lawmakers and APC governors over the Electoral Act Amendment Bill is devised to frustrate it.

The governor wondered why the president would be seeking INEC's advice on a law that is already passed by the National Assembly. He asserted that issues of security and cost implication will be used eventually as reasons why presidential ascent will be declined.

Governor Wike said the current Senate and House of Representatives controlled by the APC lack the capacity to use veto power to override President Buhari if he refuses to accent to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

Speaking on how his successor will emerge, Governor Wike reassured that the leadership of the party will meet to decide who to support at the appropriate time.

Governor Wike maintained that he is obliged to ensure that PDP wins the 2023 governorship election, but he not impose any candidate on the party.

“There is no right thinking Rivers person who will say Wike’s administration has not done well for Rivers State. And so, I believe everybody will want somebody who has something positive to add.

“One mistake I will not make is to impose somebody. From my experience as a student of history, reality has shown that it is difficult for you to say Joseph is the man I can trust. Until you give somebody power and money, that is only when you will know whether that person is trustworthy or not.”

Governor Wike said God will not allow someone that will destroy all the remarkable progress the State has made over the years to be the next governor. According to him, God will ensure that it is only someone who is courageous, firm and ready to protect the interest of Rivers State that will succeed him.

“Rivers state is a state that so many people have interest. It is a state that you have to put your feet on the ground. It is a state that you have to annoy a lot of Nigerians, and a lot of Nigerians will hate you. But what is important is for you to know what is good for your people, and stand for your people. Do not allow personal interest to sway you against the interest of your people.”

30/11/2021

N7 BILLION LIBEL SUIT: I’M IN COURT TO GET JUSTICE, CLEAR MY NAME-WIKE.

Governor of Rivers State, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike on Tuesday appeared before the State High Court in Port Harcourt, to testify as a witness in a Seven Billion Naira (N7B) libel suit against THISDAY Newspaper.

Governor Wike, said he was in court to seek justice and clear his name as a person from the malicious publication by THISDAY Newspaper, which portrayed him as deceitful, untrustworthy person, who exerts subterranean influences on judicial matters and over court sittings in Port Harcourt.

It will be recalled that Governor Wike had in August 2020 slammed a N7 Billion suit being damages for libel written and published in THISDAY's Tuesday, June 23, 2020 edition captioned, "With Wike, Obaseki Meets His PDP'S Waterloo; Almost."

The defendants in the suit are THISDAY Newspapers Limited, Leaders and Company Limited, Davidson Iriekpan, Chuks Okocha and Adibe Emenyonu.

Governor Wike, while testifying as witness in suit No. PHC/1505/CS/2020 before the court presided over by Justice A. Enebeli, asserted that the defendants maliciously and falsely portrayed him as an unreliable friend/person.

“When you say somebody cannot be trusted; that cannot be a fair comment. When you say somebody is influencing the judiciary, that cannot be a fair comment."

In his written statement on oath, Governor Wike had stated that the defendants had accused him of influencing the decision of the Court sitting in Port Harcourt that granted an injunction restraining Godwin Obaseki from participating in the primaries of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State in 2020.

He stated that the defendants maliciously accused him of undemocratically exerting influence on the primaries process of PDP in Edo State in aid of his ally, Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, who was the beneficiary of the court order restraining Obaseki from participating in the PDP primaries.

The governor, who told the court that he was not even aware of the aforementioned suit by Ogbeide-Ihama against Obaseki, said the publication was reckless, false and without regards for the truth.

According to him, contrary to well known journalistic tradition and practices, the defendants did not investigate properly to ensure the information they relied on was accurate.

“They did not seek to verify the facts from me or in any manner oblige me with the opportunity to state my own side of the story before proceeding to make the false publication.”

Governor Wike stated that the defendants further denigrated him before the entire world as a fake democrat, who engages in meddling in the internal affairs of All Progressives Congress, in order to get at his political foe, Chibuike Amaechi.

The governor explained that he is not a member of the APC and have had no hand in the internal crisis which has bedeviled the party both in Rivers State and all over Nigeria.

“By the letter of Messrs E.C. Ukala and Co., Solicitors, under the hand of Emmanuel C. Ukala, SAN, dated 23rd June 2020, the defendants were given opportunity to retract, and recant the publication as well as to offer apology for the false publication but the defendants spurned the opportunity and ignored the letter completely.”

The governor, while responding to claim by lawyer to the defendants, Turudu Ede, SAN, that the essence of the lawsuit was to intimidate and harass his clients, said the whole essence of the suit was to get justice and clear his name as a man of substantial character, honour and repute.

“The essence of the suit is to get justice since they (defendants) refused to retract the publication or apologise. So, I sued them to clear my name.”

Speaking to journalists outside the court, one of the lawyers to Governor Wike, Mr. Mark Agwu said his client is in court to seek legal redress.

“To challenge him as person, it means you have made him untrustworthy, a deceit, a cheat, an influencer of the court, because the publication they made was that he had a role to play influencing the outcome of that Federal High Court case. Nobody will take that lightly, and especially for a man who believes in the rule of law.”

The court adjourned the matter for further hearing to 12th, 13th and 14th of January 2022.
