MUSIC TERMINOLOGY.
Learning musical terminology helps a musician and vocalist to understand better what they do or perform on stage, when to apply, where to apply and how to apply them.
So, today, I will be sharing some few music terminologies that I have found to be helpful in our pursue for music excellence.
📌A Capella::Without instrumental accompaniment. Basically done with clapping of hands and stumping of foot. It used to be a style of music in time past.
📌Appassionato. Passionately, deeply emotional.
📌Downbeat—The beat with the strongest accent, at the beginning of a bar.
📌 Tempo- How fast or slow a music beat is.
📌Accent--An emphasy or slight punch at the beginning of a musical sound.
📌Dynamics—The loudness(forte) or softness(piano) of music.
📌Timbre—The tone "color" "quality" of an instrument, voice or register.
📌Staccato—Abbreviated and detached notes.
📌Musicology—The theoretical and historical study of music
📌Crescendo—A steady increase in volume.
📌Moderato—Moderate tempo.
📌Major and Minor—The real difference between a minor and a major chord is the third (just to remind, a basic chord is tonic + third + fifth). Minor and major thirds are just a half step away from each other, but this tiny little difference dramatically changes the emotional quality of a given song part.
The minor third makes the chord more sad😔🤦 while on the other hand, the major third makes it happier 😁💃💃.
📌Harmony--The simultaneous combination of notes and vocal type that are pleasing to the ear.
📌Pentatonic Scale-A scale consisting of five tones within the octave. Normally, it is DO RE MI FA SOH LA TI DO. But, in a case of pentatonic scale, (some of us who did organic chemistry, you know how many parent carbon atom are there in pentane,(5) and you know what pent😁 usually represent mathematically too. like PENTAGON.
So in pentatonic scale, there's an omission of FAH AND TI. then you will be left with DOH RE MI SOH LA, and the other octave, DOH
