WHY I DO, WHAT I DO
"Sports have had an influence on my life from a young age. They shaped me into the man I have become and continue to influence my life in a big way. At the early age of six years old, my parents went through a divorce and following the proceedings, my mother received custody and we moved away from what I knew as home and from the man I called dad.
Like every other kid that moves to a new city or a different area of town, you have to start the process from scratch of making new friends. This, at times, can be awkward or difficult, especially if you’re just trying to make friends off-the-cuff by putting yourself out there and introducing yourself. One of the main avenues that helped me in my quest for friendships with the majority of people has been sports, even at that young age.
A couple of years later, after moving back at my original childhood school, I was reunited with my old friends but throughout it all, I still kept in touch with the friends I had made at the school I attended when my mother had moved us away. To this day, I still have conversations with old friends about our different sports feats, how a specific play went during a pickup football game or what an amazing shot that I made in a pickup basketball game.
As I grew older I made the decision to serve our country and I joined the United States Air Force. Sports, once again, revisited my life. One of the key influential factors again of making friends in the service was sports. We would all get together over a good game of football or basketball and through those games I made tight relationships with those same friends for more than 20 years.
