Is the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant the next Chernobyl?
Recently, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of wanting to orchestrate a false flag attack by blowing up the nuclear plant - already under Russian control.
Russia responded by accusing Ukraine of wanting to do the same thing. There is obviously room for false flag operations from both sides. But a lot of uncertainty remains.
One thing is clear, both sides are overstating the consequences of an explosion - if it were to happen.
Five of the six reactors have been in a state of cold shutdown for over ten months now. The last operating reactor of the Zaporizhzhia plant was shutdown in early June after the Nova Kakhovka dam collapsed.
This is all significantly limiting the risk of a large-scale radiation event. In addition, the reactor cores are shielded by strong containment buildings made of thick, reinforced concrete, which are specifically designed to prevent any radioactive materials from escaping into the environment.
