"Fresh from releases on labels like MB Elektronics and Elektronik Zoo, Eddie Merced is back on his own R4808n with Light Years Away. The four-track EP originally came out on the late Eddie Watson's Snail Juice label out of Detroit in 2017, when Merced was emerging as a gifted voice in the realm of deep techno. Newly mastered by fabled engineer Dietrich Schoenemann, Light Years Away EP features Merced's distinctive style of meditative club music in full effect. The title track opens up in a mesmerising bloom of sustained strings and lingering piano chords charged with a sense of mystery - a mood which has gone on to become a trademark feature of Merceds releases. As much an atmospheric composition as a 4/4 workout, its widescreen techno at its finest. Love locks into an arrangement more squarely focused on a deep-diving rhythm section, but as ever Merced knows how to weave a melodic narrative around his beats. Nemesis meanwhile revels in the interplay between sky-scraping arps and endorphin-baiting drum machine flare-ups before Vulcan cools the mood down with a sundown cut which tips towards the house end of Merced's sound. It's an exercise in machine soul at its finest, and a compelling look back at an earlier release from an artist continuing to forge new paths in this corner of the US house and techno scene."

The widescreen scope of Eddie Merced’s take on deep techno continues to expand as the Connecticut-based producer returns with another three-strong projection past the edge of the horizon. With prior releases on his R4808n label, Merced has laid out a thematic thread tying the warm, mysterious pulse of his productions to the half-hidden secrets of government agencies and the possibilities entering the airspace above our heads.
It’s a rich pool of inspiration which carries through to ‘Starfighter’ - a moody but energising track which comes on like the last of the day’s light fading into the indigo hues of the night sky, viewed from a high altitude. The dogfight mix is also peppered with the frantic chatter of pilots engaged in a dogfight - snatches of radio taken out of context but given a new life in the undulating synth tapestry of Merced’s studio craft. For those who want to focus on the production, the ‘Dubfight Mix’ strips the comms away to let the ebb and flow of the arps and pads do the talking.
‘Magneto Propulsion’ completes the picture with a modulating, psychedelic house trip draped in broad strokes of synth strings and driven by the oscillating insistence of the bassline. As ever, it’s the hint towards the unknown which Merced expresses so perfectly, conjuring the seductive wonder of what lies just beyond the ‘truths’ as they are told to us.

There’s a haunting quality to the composition coursing through ‘Clandestine Signals’ as celestial voices and low frequency hums fall in and out of harmonic balance, creating a persuasive tension carried through by an understated, elegant rhythm structure which doubles down on the track’s immersive power. While classic in its ex*****on, it’s much more than a straight-forward deep house track, probing at greater ideas lying just beyond the reach our comprehension.
