Creating this podcast has been on my heart for many years now. It’s a project that should have been launched many years ago when I first came up with the idea. However, unfortunately, we can procrastinate on good ideas and I was the victim of procrastination.
The purpose of this podcast is to teach people the principles of stewardship and how to be good stewards over all areas of our lives. In particular, how the concept of stewardship applies in the 21st century.
In Matthew 25:14-30 Jesus tells his disciples about the parable of the talents. A parable is a short story that illustrates a greater lesson or truth. Jesus had just finished preaching to the crowds in the temple in Jerusalem and his disciples asked him about when He would return. Jesus answers them by sharing some of the signs of his return and followed it up with a series of parables. One of these parables was the parable of the talents.
Now a talent was a large unit of money back in those days. You could use a talent to pay 6,000 soldiers for a day of work. Let’s say a typical solider on average earns $100 per day. That means a single talent was the equivalent to over $600,000 in today’s money.
In this parable, a wealthy man was leaving to go on a journey and he entrusted his possessions to his servants. To one servant he entrusted 5 talents or 3 million dollars! To another servant, he entrusted 2 talents or 1.2 million dollars. To a third servant, he entrusted 1 talent or $600,000. While on the journey, the first two servants invested their master’s money and produce a return on investment while the third servant buried the money. When the master returned, the servant with 5 talents had a total of 10 talents. That’s where the name of this website comes from.
Just like these servants were entrusted with the wealth of their master, we also in the 21st century are entrusted with much. The goal of this website is to teach us how to be like the servant who ended up with 10 talents and maximize what we have been given.
You see, each of these servants are what are known as stewards. A steward is someone who is entrusted to take care of the belongings of the master. As a Christian and a minister, I believe that God is the master of everything that we have. We are his stewards entrusted to take care of what he gave us.
On this podcast, there are five areas that we will focus on to be better stewards:
Stewardship over our time.
Stewardship over our talents. (here I’m referring to our abilities, skills, and gifts, not money)
Stewardship over our finances. (here I’m referring to money)
Stewardship over our health.
Stewardship over our relationships.
Just like the master returned and demanded an account of what was given to the servants, I believe that we also will be held accountable for what we do over these five areas of resources that we have been blessed with. I say “we” because I don’t write this from the pulpit of being someone who has arrived. I too can be a better steward over these resources as well. So I’m learning right along with the rest of you.
By becoming better stewards I believe that we can live happier, more fulfilled and more God purposed lives.
