06/09/2022

Instagram’s parent company Meta has been fined €405 million for mishandling teenagers’ data. The decision and fine were finalized by Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC) after an investigation into the company’s data handling practices. The DPC’s decision came in on Friday last week, with a promise to share “full details” this week. The investigation had originally started two years ago and focused on two ways in which the social network had breached General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) rules.

The first breach was caused by Instagram allowing young users aged between 13 and 17 to set up business accounts on the platform, which made their information publicly available. Instagram also made some young users’ profiles public by default.
Meta has said in a statement that it already updated its profile settings for Instagram last year so that anyone under 18 automatically has their account set to private. Content on a private account cannot be seen by anyone unless you specifically allow it, and adults can’t message teens who don’t follow them. Meta has said that “we disagree with how this fine was calculated and intend to appeal it.”

This is the third and largest fine the DPC has imposed on Meta. The second-largest fine (about $267 million at the time) was imposed last year when DPC found that WhatsApp did not properly inform users about its data collection practices, particularly how it shared the data with Meta. WhatsApp was ordered to update its privacy policy, and the company planned to appeal.

WhatsApp’s privacy policy issue turned into a massive controversy last year with millions of people switching to other messaging apps such as Telegram, Discord, Signal, and others. Telegram reported record growth in its user base during that time.

There was also a much smaller fine earlier this year worth $18.6 million. It involved Meta’s bad record keeping around security breaches.

The Punjab government is considering reducing the syllabus of classes 1 to 10 on account of the delayed commencement of the current academic year in schools.

According to sources, Punjab’s School Education Department (SED) has already started working on decreasing the syllabus by 20% for all classes from 1 to matric.
SED Punjab will make the final decision after taking all Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISEs) into confidence and an official announcement will be made in due course.

On the other hand, students and their parents have lauded the decision of the provincial government, claiming that the students would have been overburdened if the syllabus wasn’t reduced.

Earlier today, it was reported that the Punjab government is considering introducing a law to regulate private schools. In this regard, SED Punjab has already forwarded a summary to the provincial cabinet.

KARACHI: In what appears to be a renewed wave of street crimes in the metropolis, armed muggers shot dead a human resource manager in front of his family and a teenager when they put up resistance to their robbery bids in different parts of the city on Friday.
Also on Friday, three more people were shot at and wounded by armed robbers over resistance in the city.
Gulistan-i-Jauhar SHO Pervez Bhutto said Zeeshan Afzal, 41, did some shopping from the Bin Hashim superstore near Munawar Chowrangi and drove to the Baloch Ice Cream shop with his wife and two children late on Thursday night.
The family was having ice cream when two armed robbers riding a motorbike pulled up there. One of them showed Afzal his pistol upon which he tried to grab his hand to tackle the armed robber. However the robber opened fire on him and escaped along with his accomplice from the busy area famous for restaurants and eateries on Prof Ghafoor Ahmed Road.

LAHORE: Multan has again been included along with the venues of Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi for the eighth edition of the HBL

Pakistan Super League (PSL) as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Friday announced to hold the premier T20 event from Feb 9 to March 19 next year.

Last time, Multan was included for the first time as a venue for the 2020 edition but later due to Covid-19 pandemic the city was ousted from the list.

Friday’s decisions were taken in HBL Pakistan Super League’s governing council which met here at the National High Performance Centre.

All six franchises were represented along with PCB officials who are members of the GC. PCB chairman Ramiz Raja chaired the meeting.

“The meeting congratulated the GC on a hugely successful and record-breaking HBL PSL 7 which was the first one ever to be staged in Pakistan uninterrupted since the start of the league in 2016. The successful organisation of the tournament was made possible despite significant external challenges and record revenue and viewership was attained through the two action-packed leagues in Karachi and Lahore,” a PCB press release said.

“Some important discussions around the scheduling for the next edition of the HBL PSL were made. It was decided that the HBL PSL 8 will run from Feb 9 to March 19, 2023. At least four venues will be used for hosting the matches, including Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi and Multan. Further discussions for firming up the detailed schedule will take place between the franchises and the PCB in due course,” it added.

LAHORE: As the government estimates put the destruction of the standing crops at around 900,000 acres by floods in south Punjab, it has launched a detailed survey to assess the loss of lives and properties, besides the direct or indirect impact of the calamity on the people.

“Around 900,000 acres of land have been affected by the massive floods and rains in various districts of south Punjab, while 40 people have been killed during the calamity. Another 37 people have been killed due to collapsing of houses,” Punjab Local Government & Community Development Department Minister Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed told reporters at a press conference here on Friday.
