As we head into the fall season especially around the holidays, please be aware of fraudulent scams that may include the following:

1. QR Codes: A “brushing” scam is when someone receives an unexpected gift or item not ordered in the mail from a place like Amazon or another company. When the recipient opens the package to see what it is and possibly who sent it, there is a QR code to scan to find out who sent the gift. Once the code is scanned, all the information from that phone is accessible and will be sent to scammers including personal and financial information.

2. Emails: There have been reports of staff members from local organization being sent nefarious look-alike emails from "administration" requesting the purchase of gift cards for employees. The email then requests a photo be sent of the gift cards once they are purchased on the company card giving the scammer access to the use of the funds.

A general practice to prevent most scams is to focus on how the money is transferred. Please double check the source and be wary of any transfer of funds through Moneygram, Bitcoin ATM's, QR codes, gift cards and apps similar to Venmo, Cashapp, etc.
