Hello Members,

Every year, we look forward to connecting with our fellow Percheron supporters at the Annual Members' Meeting, Banquet and Tour. Due to an emergency order enacted by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services Secretary-designee. Andrea Palm, limiting public gatherings to slow the rapid spread of COVID-19 cases in the state of Wisconsin, the Board of Directors have made the difficult decision to officially cancel the meeting scheduled for October, 30th and 31st, 2020.

Per the State of Wisconsin, "In September and October, Wisconsin became the nation’s hot spot in the COVID-19 pandemic. During the week of September 27-October 3, Wisconsin had the third highest rate of new cases and third highest total number of new cases in the nation. This rapid surge has quickly expanded to every age group and every part of the state, especially to the Fox Valley and Northeastern Wisconsin. Every part of the state now has high or very high disease activity levels, with widespread community transmission. Public gatherings of people, even a single event, have fueled the rapid spread of COVID-19."

We are exploring an alternative date and location for either late November or early December, further information will be forthcoming.

Thank you for your patience and understanding -- stay safe and healthy!

Sincerely,

James Day
President, Percheron Horse Association of America

The Percheron Horse Association of America would like to send our condolences to the Myron B. Miller Family, as well as, Dublin Valley Farm and the Burger Family on the loss of one of the great sires in our breed, B.P. Prestige.

18/04/2020

When you are discussing the influential Percheron sires of the past 30 years, M.G.’s Black Diamond is a name that will surely make the short list. Arguably one of of the best producing McGee sons, Black Diamond made a name for himself by producing both hitch and halter offspring that had some of the most athleticism of their day combined with a love for harness. Black Diamond was known for producing clean jointed offspring, with quality, tidy bone and great breed type with attractive heads. He was not utilized as extensively as some stallions of his era, but nevertheless, his footprint stretched across the continent as he became a stallion that numerous breeders would employ for use on their mares.

Bred by the Art Bast Family of Wisconsin, Black Diamond hails from the same region as the renowned MG’s Prince. His dam, Molita Laet, was bred by John Welti (breeder of MG’s Prince) and she was an own daughter of the Bast’s famous Champion stallion, Maverick, and out of a LaRex daughter. While Prince headed south, Black Diamond made his way west to Minnesota to John Welti’s farm, before eventually arriving at B&L Hanson’s Registered Percheron Farm in October of 1993.

The Hanson family utilized the stallion and built a brood mare band of his daughters and soon Black Diamond was headed east again. This time, the stallion would stand for public service, on lease from the Hansons, at the Cedarfarm Percherons operation in Gladwin, Michigan. It would not take long before Black Diamond found his stride at Cedarfarm, crossing back onto the LaRex-bred mares at Cedarfarm, who themselves were products of the storied Robinson breeding program. At Cedarfarm, Black Diamond’s production of hitch offspring would see an uptick with the likes of well-known daughters such as Cedarfarm Wixom, Cedarfarm Willow and Cedarfarm Gypsy. However, the Leekly family would also campaign offspring in the halter ring, not the least of which was the Hanson-bred stallion B&L Hanson’s Ruby’s Charlie- who would go on to be named National Champion and All American Stallion. Another Black Diamond son would earn high honors on the world stage at the Brandon, Manitoba Percheron Congress. There, Windermere’s Komet, a son of Black Diamond out of a Blackhome Duke mare, was named World Champion Halter Gelding.

M.G’s Black Diamond remains a name to watch for within modern Percheron pedigrees. His daughters became sought-after broodmares for their femininity, underpinning, and driving mindsets. They’ve carried on with their sire’s stamp of quality and breed type, and subsequent generations promise to do the same.

Pictured is a four horse hitch of dapple grey Percherons pulling the distinctive yellow wagon of Sunshine Farms of Bay City, Michigan. This photo was taken outside of the arena at the 2000 Michigan Great Lakes International Horse Show and Pull.

The Bellor Family exhibited their Sunshine Farms Percherons at shows at the International, National, State and County fair level for many years; attending shows all across the State of Michigan and beyond. Their daughter Nancy, pictured on the lines in the accompanying photo, did much of the driving for the hitch.

In addition to turning out a competitive family owned hitch, Sunshine Farms also was involved in breeding registered Percherons, at one time standing the Blackhome Duke son, Duke’s General Schwarzkopf. General Schwarzkopf was the sire of the multiple time National Champion Cart Mare, Sunshine Fantasia, (bred by Sunshine Farms). Fantasia lead the Flat Rock Draft Horses six horse hitch of mares for many years.

Family operations such as Sunshine Farms were such important contributors to the grass roots of the Percheron Breed through their support, involvement and participation in so many county fairs throughout the years. County fairs along with the breeders and exhibitors who attend them across the country are still vital parts of the Percheron Industry, today.

Some non-corona virus subject matter for your reading pleasure!

Pictured is the Percheron stallion Riverbend Monkoncarlaet, a son of Rookwood Grandeur and out of the four-time Royal Agricultural Winter Fair champion Monet. Monkoncarlaet’s pedigree combined the likes of Monarch, Laet and Dragon from his dam side with the great Koncarcalyps, by way of Rookwood Grandeur on the top.

As seen from the photo, Riverbend Monkoncarlaet was a stallion of both substance and style, possessing of a long hip and shoulder with a proportional length of back. This picture shows a horse of ample length of neck and a chiseled head with tremendous breed type. It is no wonder that this stallion was recognized on the tanbark and named the 1947 Res. Champion at the Royal Winter Fair. He was bred and exhibited by Carl Roberts of St. Adolphe, Manitoba, later purchased by Jonathan Fox III of Saskatchewan and finally ended up at Agriculture Canada where he stood for public service in Alberta, Canada.

Perhaps his biggest accomplishment is being the sire of the famous Justamere Showtime, a horse bred by the aforementioned Jonathan Fox. Showtime undeniably transformed the path of the modern Percheron through his prolific breeding sons. Most notably, Highview Dragano propelled the Blackhome breeding program into an era of further dominance within the most competitive show rings on the continent during the 1980’s. Likewise, The Showtime son South Valley Did-It was heavily utilized in the Robinson program in Michigan for many years, creating many prolific offspring when he was crossed with their band of La Rex bred mares. Other sons such as Highview Justintime and Lucasia Sir William also left their own marks on the breed through their production of champion hitch and halter offspring of the highest caliber.

Through his son Justamere Showtime, Riverbend Monkoncarlaet can now be found in just about every Percheron pedigree today, making him, without question, one of great foundational building blocks of the modern Percheron horse.

Not every horse is being driven, some are there for only additional pulling power. Each driver can control only as many horse as his hands have lines for, right and left side directional. Look at the number of reins that extend back to the driver's hands. Take this from me, I've driven multi-horse teams. Really impressive watching these teams and the level training involved!

An important and influential stallion in the modern Percheron breed, the Canadian-born son of Justamere Showtime, South Valley Did-It, needs little introduction. This stallion can be credited with building numerous breeding programs and leaving a long-standing impact on our breed. Although no perfect specimen conformationally, Did-It’s different strain of bloodline, along with a front end far ahead of its time, propelled him to prominence; as numerous horsemen and women found breeding niches with the horse when he was crossed with the premier American mare lines of that day.

South Valley Did-It’s first registered offspring is perhaps his most famous. The Did-It son, named DID, was bred by the Robinson Family of Richland, Michigan and would make a mark in the showring as well as the Percheron stud book. As the sire of the renowned Mc Gee, DID finds himself in the pedigrees of a significant percentage of today’s Percherons. Mc Gee was a prolific stallion, leaving sons and daughters that would be responsible and credited for ushering in a new era of Percheron Draft horses. DID’s dam, Princess, would be crossed with South Valley Did-It no less than 15 times, producing notable show and breeding horses with an uncommon regularity. Other notable offspring from this cross include the likes of Valentine, Blizzard, Confetti, World Congressman, Champagne and Calgary. Many of these individuals became influential in breeding programs across the continent.

It is interesting to note that some of Did-It’s most famous and prolific offspring came from the era in which he was owned and utilized by Mrs. R.L. Robinson. However, during this time frame, he rarely registered more than a half-dozen c**ts each year; nevertheless, a significant percentage of them would go on to prominence. Not the least of these was the Robinson bred mare and Did-It daughter, Midnight Contessa. Midnight Contessa would make her mark on the breed as the dam to the Robinson-bred All American stallion, Trophy; and the Reserve All Americans, Camille and Cousteau. Contessa’s full brother, Count On It, would head south to Ohio, where he was utilized for numerous breeding seasons at William Westbrook’s Buckeye Percherons. Count On It finds his way into many a Percheron pedigree by way of his grandson, Cottonwood Count, a stallion employed by the Torgerson Family of Clearbrook, MN. Cottonwood Count is the sire the mare, Torge Countess, whom some may recognize as the dam of the consistent hitch horse producer, Skyview Count On It (a son of Pleasant View King).

Two other Did-It offspring who hit their stride in the show ring were the John C. Hertel owned mares named Easter Fury’s Grand Coletta and Margo Lee Lismore. Both of these mares were dominant in line classes at some of the nation’s most prestigious shows. Margo Lee Lismore was a full sister to the mare Katy Did, both out of the Robinson-bred La Rex mare, Katy Kazoo. Interestingly, Katy Kazoo was a full sister to the aforementioned mares Princess and Countess. Katy Kazoo’s daughter by Did-It, Katy Did, was bred to South Valley Prince Ha Ha and produced the mare Abbykadabra Kazaam (bred by Mrs. R.L. Robinson’s daughter, Abby Lynn Robinson-West). Kazaam would go on to Cedarfarm Percherons and foal the mare Cedarfarm Willow, a champion hitch mare and a high seller at the first Cedarfarm dispersal sale. While all of these Robinson mares do become difficult to keep straight on paper, its worthwhile, important and interesting to note and reflect upon how Mrs. R.L. Robinson’s consistent breeding methodology speaks out to us through the registry records, even today.

Another Did-It daughter that proved her consistency as a powerful broodmare was the mare Pleasant View Michelle. Michelle is best known as the dam of Pleasant View Michaela, Pleasant View Michael, Pleasant View Murphy, Pleasant View Moby and Pleasant View Melody. Michaela was the auction high at the first ever Mid America Draft Horse Sale. Following in his sister's shoes Murphy was a high selling gelding at the Mid America sale, going to Rovenolt Stables of Turbotville, PA. There, he lead their six-horse hitch and was a winning cart horse. Moby although suffering a broken leg at ten months of age, recovered and sold through Gordyville for $29,000 to the Cape Cod Wood Siding hitch. Melody was a high selling mare at the Gray Transportation dispersal sale, going to Red Oak Farms, where she, too, spent time leading their six horse hitch of mares.

Did-It was also utilized by the late John Welti; just as the breeder had used Did-It’s grandson, Mc Gee, with such success. Often forgotten in the list of prominent Did-It offspring is the Welti mare, Princess Polly. Jim and Peg Day bought the mare from the Welti Estate in May of 1993, and would soon breed her to their Welti-bred stallion, M.G.’s Prince. This the first cross of many, Princess Polly foaled L.D.’s Prince Classy in 1995. By 1998 Classy had been sold to Sterling Farms of Gladwin, MI. In 2000, she topped the Sterling Dispersal sale, garnering the sum of $32,500, purchased by Hames Valley Vineyards of California. In many ways, Classy’s sale helped to solidify M.G.’s Prince daughters as reliable bell-ringers at public auctions across the nation for many years to come. At home, the Day’s were raising and retaining both a younger sister and a younger brother to Classy. The sister was named L.D.’s Prince Elegance and she would become a consistent contender in line-classes at some of the largest shows in the country, earning All American accolades during her time on the tanbark. Classy’s full brother, L.D.’s Prince Genesis, was retained as a stallion to perhaps serve as a successor to his sire, M.G.’s Prince. Genesis also spent time at Hames Valley Vineyards, where he registered several foals. However, it was upon his return to Iowa that Genesis would be bred with the Blue Ribbon Farms Hercules daughter, Blue Ribbon Farms Quintessa, (she bred and owned by Albert and Karen Cleve of Farmington, MO.) This cross would result in his most notable offspring, the multiple All American mare, Blue Ribbon Farms Unique. Unique’s halter career would culminate with a World Championship in 2010 at the Des Moines, Iowa World Percheron Congress. She would then go on to spend time in the Blue Ribbon Days hitch of Percheron Mares.

Did-It would end his final years with Rip Swan under his Sires International banner, based out of Centre Hall, PA. His last foal was registered on July 12th, 1994; 24 years and 3 days after South Valley Did-It was foaled. The longevity of this horse, and the staying power of both his bloodline and contributions to the breed speak volumes to the quality and dominance of this sire. South Valley Did-It will always be remembered as an important cog in the wheels of Percheron progress, and his many prolific descendants carry a similar torch onward, today. Undoubtedly, in the coming years, we will find ourselves discussing subsequent generations and prominent horses that have received their stamp of greatness, in part, from this legendary sire.

Is there a more stress-free way to halter break foals?
This c**t had a halter put on him for the very first time 2 hours prior to this photo being taken.
Truffles is our resident foal trainer; she works about 20 days of the year and the other 345 she is generally getting herself into mischief!
If you know anything about donkeys you will know that they don’t often get themselves into bad situations. Unlike a horse, they always think things through, so it’s obvious Truffles is quite comfortable with her student.
After one or two 4 hour sessions the foals are broke to lead and tie.
We adore our long eared friend and we believe every farm needs a donkey!
