In the Philippines, thousands of activists from different organizations of basic sectors held the People’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) 2023 to expose the nation’s real conditions as President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. gave his version on July 24, 2023.

Highlighted issues are the continuing human rights violations and extrajudicial killings due to heavy militarization and policing in communities where farmers, indigenous peoples and workers are struggling to demand their rights to land, self determination and sustainable livelihood.

Activists also denounced the regime of Marcos Jr. for its efforts to revise history of his late dictator father’s martial law era.

Unmask the trickery: DZMC-YCG presents the much-awaited PUP Radio Conference F2F comeback after three years
The striped tent is up, get your tickets ready ‘cause we’re in for the greatest spectacle of the year

As it marks its 10th edition, the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP)’s DZMC-Young Communicator’s Guild (YCG) is set to kick off the PUP Radio Conference on April 14, 2023, at Tanghalang PUP, three years after the pandemic halted its physical symposium.

Excitement is an understatement for Project Head Edward Jayson Comeo for leading this year’s theme: “MANIOBRA: Unveiling the Illusion Behind Public Deception,” which aims to highlight the importance of educating the masses in the post-truth era, when the value of truth in socio-political discourse has declined.

“I am confident that this year, we have a bigger purpose, now more important and relevant than ever, because of our mission and objective to take part in the challenge of combating information peddlers who engage in (the) deceptive practice,” he said.

Comeo also added, “There's so much to anticipate, but above all, I am hopeful that all of the sacrifices we made together with the organizers of this event will be worth it because there will be additional knowledge that we will gain thereafter.”

Meanwhile, Gef Manabat, Project Co-Head, wishes to offer the participants “a thought-provoking and timely symposium that will inspire a much more enthusiastic, passionate, and patriotic generation of radio practitioners who will be powered by their integrity to serve the public.”

Together with the conference is the PUP Radio Festival, dedicated to flaunting the students' talents, skills, and originality in Radio News Production, Radio Podcasting, and Radio Jingle Making. The online competition, now in its third year, is open to high school and college students nationwide, with over 140 participants. The Best Output and Special Recognition prizes for the most spectacular entries will be presented on April 16, 2023. It will be live-streamed on the PUP Radio Conference and the event Media Partners' official pages.

The PUP Radio Conference 2023 is co-presented by AboutFace Cosmetics, Philusa Corporation,
RED Images, Motivo, Sweet Soul PH, The Light Bearer, and Yummy2Tummy PH.

The DZMC—Young Communicators' Guild is the official student radio and news organization of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines—College of Communication in Sta. Mesa, Manila.

Since December of last year, the people of Peru have mobilized throughout the country protesting the political situation. We spoke with Gloria Pilares Suyo, president of the Regional Council of Women in Cusco Region, and Berlin Diques, president of the Regional AIDESEP Organization in Ucayali about the protests and the current political situation.

After the ousting of democratically elected president Pedro Castillo by a right-wing led parliamentary coup, protestors call for the resignation of president Dina Boluarte, the closure of congress and call for immediate elections, and the creation of a new constitution. Amid protests, over 60 have been killed due to state repression.

Ahead of International Women's Day this March 8, we highlight the voices of women on the frontlines of people's struggles from our content over the years. Fighting for land, sovereignty, self-determination and rights for the people, women have always been at the forefront of social movements.

International Women's Day was first commemorated by the Socialist Party of America in February of 1909. The holiday was soon replicated in Europe when german communist activist Clara Zetkin proposed it at the International Socialist Congress in 1910. However, it wasn't until 1917 that the date would be set to March 8, after the women-led national strike in Russia calling for "Bread and Peace" that would see the Czar's abdication four days later, and women's right to vote granted by the provisional government.

In the Philippines, Bonifacio Day commemorates working class revolutionary Andres Bonifacio who united and led Filipinos in a revolt against Spanish colonizers in 1886. Because of his background as a worker, the workers movement of the Philippines leads thousands of grassroots organizations from varying sectors in a protest for higher wages and lower prices. As did Bonifacio, the movement today recognizes that imperialism is the root cause of their oppression including poor working conditions.

ATM | In Manila, mass protest is led by the Peasant Movement of the Philippines and joined by various peoples organizations for National Peasant Day, denouncing the failures of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The self-appointed Chief of Agriculture is criticized for neglecting the country's largest sector -- farmers.

Today also marks the 50th anniversary of Presidential Decree 27 of former dictator Marcos Sr., a land reform program which the peasant movement claims failed to redistribute land from the landlords to its tillers.

People across the Americas observe the Day of Indigenous Resistance (formerly Day of “la raza” or Columbus Day) around October 12 each year. The holiday was originally established to commemorate the landing of Cristopher Columbus on the continent in 1492 and the “encounter” between two worlds. It has been reclaimed by indigenous people across the continent to denounce the over 500 years of genocide, colonialism and dispossession still perpetuated to this day, and visibilize their current demands.
