Representation Matters! ✊🏽 If you want to raise anti-racist children, reading books with representation is imperative. It may seem like a small step but it’s a crucial one! Representation normalizes people of color (and others from marginalized groups) rather than centering whiteness as the default. Make sure you follow along with my IG stories because I frequently share books for children. I’ve also made a list. Check out my affiliate link. {Link in Bio}

Committing to be anti-racist is an ongoing mission and not a trend to follow in the moment. Here are ways to come together as a family and be vocal about social injustices.

Wow!!
A little lesson for you. 🧠
Unconscious or implicit bias is actually a sign that your brain is working. 🧠 Seriously! Your brain has millions of pieces of information thrown at it in a second. There is no possible way to process all of this information, so your brain has to QUICKLY decide what to focus on. Everything else gets categorized in the subconscious according to our experiences (memories) and socialization. This can be a good thing. For example, we don’t have to think about whether or not we will touch a hot stove every time we encounter one. It only took once (maybe twice for some of us 🤪) and then that information was filed in the subconscious and we instinctively know not to touch without having to consciously think about it.
Over time, though, through socialization and experience, this is also how implicit bias is born. Our brains will categorize people based on their skin, how they’re dressed, they’re accent, etc. and we will instinctively respond without even being consciously aware.
The good news is we CAN retrain our brains! We can learn to be aware of the biases and then replace them with non biased thoughts. This second piece is crucial because if you are simply aware of the bias but do nothing about it, what good does it do to be aware? 🤔
We will be sharing some facts about Juneteenth in our stories. While we are happy that people are learning of and recognizing Juneteenth... we have to know the TRUTH. Let’s stop trying to make our history sound nice. It’s not. It’s ugly. But our future doesn’t have to be. ✊🏽

“The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor."

Let’s stop saying that talking about racism is divisive. Ok? We will never get anywhere by doing that. 💯 Via

“Notions of family saturate the black freedom struggle in all of its aspects, especially the threat of police brutality. Under the constant surveillance, suspicion, and violence of law enforcement in America, black people share a kinship of calamity. A brotherhood and sisterhood of suffering. Like any family, it is not something we choose. This sense of solidarity through hardship is forced on us by the oppression we endure in a white-supremacist society.”

Black people feel the pain and loss of black life as if it were our very own blood that had been brutalized—because it easily could have been.
Many parents are asking right now how they can raise anti-racist kids. This is a very important question but we must remember that it starts in the heart and if we are going to mold little hearts that have love and compassion, it starts with our OWN hearts!

Have you heard our latest episode? We are covering some of the biggest misconceptions about Black Lives Matters!
https://www.mochamamas.com/episodes/blacklivesmatter
Today on Mocha Mamas, we are addressing some of the misconceptions of Black Lives Matter. It is more than a hashtag and it is not a movement that endorses or promotes violence, hate or Black superiority. It is a necessary movement to draw attention to police brutality and how it is impacti
This is good but it does not mean justice will be served. The other officers need to be arrested as well! And they ALL need to be convicted which is a big feat, considering the statistics. But this is a step in the right direction!
So many are asking what they can do. Sign and call!
None
This is a POWERFUL statement. What if we had actually listened to Kap and did something instead of running him off the field (literally)?
More good news! This shows the power of organizing. However, let’s not forget that we should not *need* organizing for justice to be served and equity to be attained.
