People have been asking me about the potential ban on TikTok and here is my take.
Yes- there is a good chance that TikTok is being shut down in the USA.
This is why I always suggest that business owners be on multiple platforms. There is no way to know if they will be around forever (remember MySpace?).
People who put all of their time into TikTok and did not set up shop elsewhere will scramble to find new homes for their content. YouTube and Instagram are going to pick up much of the business, whereas newer platforms like RedNote may pick up those who are dead set against using Meta.
RedNote is also owned by a Chinese company so I would avoid it as its future will be unknown in the USA.
What does this all mean for business owners trying to grow their online presence? Social Media isn't going away, just one platform for it. Your audience will still be there, just in another space. If you aren't on at least Instagram or YouTube shorts, I highly recommend getting started as soon as possible. YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world (next to Google), if you have a lot of video content it is a no-brainer to be there.
No, your business may not be affected by this TikTok ban and you may not care or understand the ramifications. However, there are millions of users on the platform who earn income from selling their products and promoting their services.
Imagine if this happens with the NextDoor App, Facebook or Instagram? Think of all of your reviews lost, followers and customers gone, all of your content...poof!
This is a good reminder that if you rely on social media (like so many millions of businesses do), rethink your strategy and be ready for anything. Be on at least 2 platforms regularly, be consistent with your content and have an email list!
An email list is something that you own and is an asset to your business. You have the ability to stay in touch with your customers quickly and easily and that list is YOURS-it can't be deleted by the powers that be.
Are you affected by the ban? What strategies are you working on to get through it?
