Meet our February HSPxBN book picks curator, CLARE HILTON! Clare is our OG book picks guru and BN liaison from Barnes & Noble in Webster, NY, and as this month’s guest, we did a Q&A to help our listeners get to know the source of our latest selections. Listen now to our episode at hersaypodcast.com or your favorite podcast app.📚

Q&A with Clare Hilton

HSP: What is your favorite book of all time?

CLARE: I don’t think I can name just one book. I love so many for so many different reasons. My mother instilled a love of reading in me at a very young age. I love all of Jane Austen. She is very special to me because my grandmother introduced me to her and our shared love of her strengthened our relationship.

HSP: What is your go-to genre currently?

CLARE: Literary Fiction

HSP: Who is your favorite female protagonist?

CLARE: Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables.

HSP: Who is your favorite female villain?

CLARE: Ursula the Sea Witch.

HSP: When do like to read?

CLARE: I really like reading with a cup of coffee in the morning. But most if the time, my chance to read is before bed. I will take any opportunity I have. If I’m really loving the book, I can take it everywhere with me and snag any second I get.

HSP: Where is your favorite place to read?

CLARE: At home, it is on my chaise lounge near my bookcase. My son, Kyle, and I call it my “snuggle spot.” But any chance I get to read outside near water, I’ll take!

HSP: What do you like to do in your spare time, when you’re not reading?

CLARE: If I’m not reading, I’m working, playing with Kyle, or catching up with friends. I also enjoy taking walks.

HSP: If you could meet one woman - alive today or throughout history - who would it be?

CLARE: I have thought and thought about this, and there are just so many. But I am going to say Lucille Ball.

On this we’re thinking of the women in Ukraine. As friends, daughters, wives, mothers, and neighbors, caretaking and making sacrifices for others comes naturally to us, and the women fleeing or staying in Ukraine are in an incomprehensibly horrible situation.
*
This is Dinara Kasko, a renown Ukrainian pastry chef whose beautiful pastries have been presented at special events worldwide, including at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In her IG post she described this picture taken at a Ukrainian shelter - she, her husband, their small children, and cat had been in & out of shelters since the invasion began - saying when her husband took this photo she instinctively smiled. Yet can you imagine how she must have actually been feeling in this moment? How many women in and fleeing Ukraine are holding it together for their loved ones, bridging the life they knew before to the uncertainty that lies ahead for them?

Today we are donating feminine hygiene products to a local reputable organization sending goods to Ukraine and Poland shelters. Please join me in supporting Ukrainian women by making your own donation - goods or financial - through a local organization, or those listed below, if you are able. Thank you!

The path to pursuing our goals and dreams is rarely a smooth, easy, or linear one. When we know what we want and have the passion, plan, and tools to achieve it, it feels like nothing can stop us. But when unforeseen challenges and obstacles test our resilience, we need to take a moment to re-calibrate, and create a new plan for achieving our goals. For many of us, 2021 has been a year of regaining our footing after the uncertainty of lockdowns, perhaps riddled with stops and starts, and getting back to a new sense of normal in a world that seems to be evolving faster than ever. If this sounds familiar to you, you may be looking to get back on track in 2022 to pursue the goals, passions, and dreams you’ve had to put on hold, maybe even defining new goals to pursue and achieve in the coming year. In this HERsay Podcast episode, in our series She Succeeded (and You Can, Too!), we’re talking with Dr. Dravon James, author of Freedom is Your Birthright and host of the Everyday Peace radio show, who shares tangible steps we can take every day to re-focus, re-ignite our drive, and make our goals and dreams a reality in the new year. Let's do this!

On this , we’re proud to continue sharing the incredible story of Daystar Rosalie Jones, featured in the latest episode in our “Callings” series. In the episode, Daystar shares the most impactful advice she ever received, which came from a visual arts teacher in college. “She told me, ‘You’ll never do anything original until it comes from who you are.’ And so it was then that I set off to figure out just exactly who I was. As Thanksgiving approaches, We’re feeling especially thankful for the opportunity to talk with the amazing, trailblazing Daystar Rosalie Jones. The traditional stories and teachings of Native Americans apply to all of us, and as someone with a dance background, Caroline was excited to learn about Daystar Rosalie Jones, founder of the first native modern dance company, whose dance work provides a unique platform for understanding human nature via folklore storytelling of the Indiginous cultures.

In the latest episode of the HERsay Podcast Caroline sits down with Daystar Rosalie Jones to learn about her trailblazing path to using modern dance to keep Native American culture in hearts and minds of Americans. Daystar Dance-Drama of Indian America will be performing in Rochester, NY December 3-5. Visit hersaypodcast.com for more information and to listen to this special conversation.

As Halloween approaches, how many young girls do YOU think will be dressing up as a Disney Princess, past or present? There are few influential figures who have had a stronger impact than the Disney Princess, helping girls to define what they are capable of doing, and their aspirations for the future. Disney princesses have come a long way since the first, Snow White, sang “Someday My Prince Will Come” and kept house for the seven dwarves while they went off to work. Osnat Shurer served as Producer of this year’s Raya and the Last Dragon and also 2016’s Moana, offering a new model of princess tasked with saving her kindgdom and learns valuable lessons along the way.

In this episode of our HERsay Today series, Osnat Shurer shares how princesses Raya and Moana and their hero’s journeys came to be the newest in the Disney royal lineage, and what the creative team had do to make sure they told each story with Disney’s signature authenticity and original storytelling. Listen now on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts, or visit hersaypodcast.com. Raya and the Last Dragon and Moana are currently available to watch on Disney+!

We love this post from x today. So many women are child-free by choice, yet we aren’t hearing many of their stories or seeing them represented in media. Would love to see/hear more in TV, films, and magazines so women don’t feel like they always have to explain themselves. What do you think? For those who’ve made the choice to not have kids, what’s been most frustrating/annoying for you to hear from others or in what see from society at large?
