Acre toys #21 Sennheiser MD 441 Dynamic Microphone

The Sennheiser MD 441 is a supercardiod dynamic microphone that looks (first) and sounds (second) beautiful. I have struggled with 421’s at times, feeling like the mid range feels too wide and uncontrolled, and I am Always looking for a smoother sm57 alternative. Enter the MD441 which was first released in 1971. Perhaps it’s due to the polar pattern but I have always been drawn to the focus of these mics. They most certainly impart a timeless sort of sound as well. There are roll off options and it can take heap loads of volume. I use it primarily on clean and dirty guitars and basses, as well as drums and louder percussion. And then there is the imitation leather sides….aah, a beautiful microphone.

HAPPY JULY 31st.!

With a tight turn around I had the opportunity to mix and master (at .audio ) the audio of the performance at in Clisson France a few weeks ago and it was a total blast. Recorded by the man who laughs in the face of exhaustion - Mr. and with video from SOMBRERO & Co. it was amazing to hear (and see) the work from all involved to bring these songs to the live stage.

HA...2024 remembers! AMAZING to see this going around.

There is no bad SCISSORFIGHT but I will say #2 and #1 are both in my list of favorite records I have been a part of. So much fun making these a lifetime ago. They knew just how serious not to take it.

Today we take a trip to New Hampshire to rank the albums of Scissorfight, so enjoy not having any sales tax while you nod along and agree with all our opinions.

One minute after my birthday I received the best gift - the release of RIDICULOUS AND FULL OF BLOOD.

This is the culmination of years of work by the most talented and best of humans

We were able to work In some fantastic studios including RAW Recording SILVERCORD Studios SPACEMAN Sound STUDIO G SANDAS SILENCE recordings RISING PULSE Studio, ETERNAL KINGDOM Studio, LOHO Studios (RIP) and ACRE AUDIO .audio. Gifted guests Thomas Hedlund (Cult Of Luna, Phoenix) and Joel Hamilton (Battle Of Mice, Book Of Knots) gave passionate musical contributions as well. It was mastered brilliantly by the genius and ever patient ears of Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering Service . Now it has been released thanks to the herculean efforts from everyone at RED CREEK Records and the tireless lifting of Haydn Britland.

I did some writing, a bunch of engineering, tons of mixer-ing and gobs of Producer-ing in the making of this record. It is a good example of the sorts of things I have been busy with for the past half decade. I could not be happier that it is finally off my computer and into peoples ears!

SUPERNATURAL took roughly a year to complete. It was recorded 2 and a half times, across two continents in 4 studios. It was engineered by myself, Tom Tierney and Johannes Persson. It was mixed at ACRE AUDIO and mastered by the brilliant (and patient) ears of BOB WESTON at CHICAGO MASTERING SERVICE.

Acre toys #20 Federal AM-864/U Tube Limiter

I love this strange beast. Some folks speak of it’s grit but grit is subjective. I use it often in parallel to smooth out more extreme compressed or gained out sources such as vocals. It doesn’t create chaos but controls it in a special gutsy way. It has a particular midrange which I love. For this style of tube limiter I find it pretty fast and It is fantastic on hyper transient sources like percussion and more percussive acoustic sounds. Also…it wins the coolest VU award. With production starting in 1954, these were used in the Korean War as broadcast transmitting limiters and the manual describes various techniques to keep them out of the hands of enemies (transcribed below).

66. Methods Of Destruction

a. Smash. Smash the tubes, switches, meter, controls, capacitors and transformers; use sledges, axes, handaxes, pickaxes, crowbars or heavy tools

b. Cut. Cut internal and external wires and cables; use axes, knives or machetes.

c. Burn. Burn cords, resistors, capacitors, wiring, and technical manuals; use gasoline, kerosene, oil, flamethrowers, or incendiary grenades.

d. Bend. Bend panel, cabinet and chassis.

e. Explosives. If explosives are necessary, use fi****ms, grenades or TNT.

f. Disposal. Bury or scatter the destroyed parts in slit trenches, foxholes, or throw them into streams.

g. Destroy. Destroy everything.

Acre toys #19 Earthworks QTC-1 Omnidirectional Microphones

These are truly magical microphones. They make anything feel like a finished orchestral recording. Incredibly smooth, they bring the sonic image to another level whenever I use them. The QTC-1’s are extremely omnidirectional and are amazing as ambient mics on pretty much any application. They are also fantastic for acoustic instruments, piano, strings etc., 2 things of note…1 - They capture a considerable amount of low end and often need to be high passed (especially if the walls between control rooms and live rooms are thin), 2 - their surgical tool-like appearance often inspires folks to touch them where they shouldn’t. Always a joy to work with these.

Acre toys #18 Deltalab ADM EFFECTRON II 1024

Mostly you want equipment that does it’s job right, sometimes you covet the things that do it wrong. The Deltalab ADM EFFECTRON II 1024 (released in the 80’s) was one of the first digital delays and boasted one full second of delay time. A total evil maker, it’s modulation, delay and infinite repeat options are easy to use and can quickly create total mayhem. It also has that early digital crunch that I love (like an old Ensoniq Mirage). If you are unfamiliar and find yourself working in an older studio, they will have one. Long since removed from the racks it will be in a closet or basement somewhere. Don’t worry about the dust, just find it, plug it in and make some ridiculous noise.

Acre toys #17 OTARI MTR-12 1/4” 2 Track Tape Machine

These scribblings are independent thoughts with no affiliation to any company and will be intentionally unscientific…

Before Laptop recording, When Pro Tools was Sound Tools, the young me started recording with my portable rig - a two piece 1/2” OTARI MX5050 with 4 rubbermaid bins of cables, mic stands and mics. It was like bringing a washer and dryer to every house or practice space to record. I loved it. As my workplace changed to studios I have always gravitated towards tape for both multitracking and mix down when possible. All machines offer their own unique advantages and some frustrating quirks. Enter my latest deck - the RAV4 of tape machines - the OTARI MTR-12. This thing is the most stable machine I have ever owned / maintained. It also happens to sound fantastic. Aligned correctly and hit correctly it is brilliant at adding the tape aesthetic without adding a bunch of additional artifacts. I am a big fan of MCI Decks but my experience is that you need to work in an environment with an on site tech to keep these rock friends in shape. The MTR-12 barely slips over time. Really impressive for a machine that is this old. So my fondness and reliance on OTARI tape machines continues. It isn’t the right choice for every mix I do but it is always an option worth trying, and ends up on most records I work on. Love it.

ELECTRIC HAWK. I just love this band. An acquired taste I guess, but they shouldn't be because they are simply fantastic. They gave us all a holiday present this year by releasing their new Album "III" on Christmas morning.

I was able to track this beast in Studio B at Electrical Audio in Chicago and mixed it back at ACRE. This will be on no one's end of the year lists because they released it after everyone wrote them....but it is on mine!
