Yesterday, 32 student athletes celebrated signing their National Letter of Intent to play their sport at the next level. Carroll athletes in gymnastics, baseball, basketball, soccer, cross country, football, lacrosse, rowing, swimming, diving, golf, volleyball and water polo signed on with colleges across the country during a ceremony at Carroll Senior High School. Prior to the ceremony, family and friends gathered in the student activities center at tables decorated with college paraphernalia, athletic awards and photos.

“I’m looking forward to joining the awesome coaching staff and playing at DBU where I can learn more about Christ and play soccer at the same time,” Kenzi Tufts (12) said. “I picked DBU because we have a great chance of winning a national championship and they always have a winning culture every single year. I also look forward to playing with my friend Maddie Sexton who graduated from Carroll last year.”

Yesterday for Halloween, girls and boys sports teams continued their annual traditions and dressed up in costumes during practice.

“For Halloween, LDS always dresses up in groups and it’s so much fun because we can come together as team and laugh and have so much fun,” Taelor Brouse (12) said.

The Carroll Choirs hosted their first performance of the year last night with their Fall Preview Concert. Six different groups ranging from the middle school choir to the top varsity choirs performed eight songs including movie/television numbers, a Taylor Swift song and two All State pieces.

“My favorite part of the fall concert was the guys’ performance of ‘I’ve Got a Dream’ from ‘Tangled’,” Sindhu Guntur (12) said. “Everyone had so much fun watching Principal Wilson’s cameo solo in the song, and it was generally such a fun performance.”

This morning the boys and girls cross country teams competed in the District 4-6A championship, bringing home first place for the boys varsity, girls varsity, JV boys and second place for the JV girls. Alexandra Walsh (12) and Caden Leonard (10) each placed first overall for their respective varsity races.

“Both the boys and girls team protected the Dragon tradition and won districts so I’m glad I got to help out with that,” Walsh said. “We are going to keep working hard for regionals and plan to give Flower Mound a scare.”

Last night the volleyball team celebrated their senior night with a 3-0 win against the Timber Creek Falcons. The team is now 9-0 in district. The ceremony to recognize the five seniors began at 4:30 p.m. followed by the game at 5. In addition to the Dragon seniors, the Falcon seniors were also acknowledged and handed flowers.

“As a senior, I am bittersweet about districts ending. We have a lot to be excited about being undefeated so far, but it is also the last time we will get to play on our own court,” Taylor Starr (12) said. “I am excited for playoffs as we have high hopes and believe we can make it very far.”

The team plays their last district game on Oct. 13 against Keller Central at CSHS.

Today, Dragon Media students were able to meet with members of the media production teams for the Dallas Cowboys at their headquarters and practice facilities at The Star in Frisco. During the behind-the-scenes media tour, senior Lujayn Ahmed was invited into the studio to be a part of the Cowboys StoryLine podcast with Cowboys Senior Manager of Digital Media Nick Eatman.

“That moment was surreal,” Ahmed said. “Getting to speak with the media team of the Dallas Cowboys felt so inspiring, especially when so many of them were once starting off with STEM majors yet found their calling in what they truly loved. I couldn’t help but connect with them and realize that I’m not the only person trying to figure out their future. Also, getting featured on the podcast was insane. So glad I took up the opportunity to jump in and wing it while they were live.”

Students were offered the field trip opportunity as the Sports Media class, taught by Coach Lindsey Jacobson, is in its inaugural year at Carroll Senior High.

Yesterday, Dragon nation celebrated homecoming in Town Square with the annual parade and carnival organized by CSHS Student Council. Local band Redwall performed in the gazebo with a special guest appearance by principal Ryan Wilson as community members enjoyed games, food and socializing with Carroll student groups and teams. Following a pep rally with performances by Emerald Belle officers, cheer and Dragon Band, the queen and king, seniors Millie Ord and Bridger Jense, were crowned atop Town Hall.

“I was there with the lacrosse group,” Matthew Pendergrass (9) said. “We had a tent set up where we had a toy lacrosse stick and bean bags where kids could play to win candy and try out lacrosse. I think the carnival is kind of cool and gives people a chance to see all the things Southlake does, like little kids getting into new sports. We’re trying to make lacrosse grow in the community because we’re hoping it becomes a UIL sport.”

The first period biotechnology class at CSHS does an egg lab to demonstrate what a scientific model of a cell would look like. The egg was left in vinegar for two days and then cut open to run tests on different parts of the egg to determine if the cell/egg had a certain molecule.

“The lab was really fun and gave me great insight into how a cell may look and act,” Maddie Tran (12) said. “I have gained a deeper understanding of what a scientific model is and how that may help me in biotechnology.”

Olivia Rodrigo’s sophomore album, “GUTS,” dropped Sept. 8 to massive appraisal. Her songwriting has improved, her vocals more developed, and is sonically more diverse than “SOUR,” her record-smashing debut album.

“I think that in general, making this album has given me a lot of confidence as a songwriter,” Rodrigo said in an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music.

While some of the same themes from “SOUR” are explored in “GUTS”, like dealing with a breakup, jealousy, and the teenage experience, this time around Rodrigo explores them much more deeply, and often in more clever ways. Rodrigo has come into her own with “GUTS”, and it shows.

The Dragons defeated the Timber Creek Falcons in a rainy 44-0 shutout on Thursday night. In their first district game of the season, Carroll had 460 total yards and held Timber Creek’s offense to only 138 yards.

“The team is taking steps forward every game to make a long run in playoffs,” lineman Spencer Gillett (12) said.

Despite the weather, the students came out to Keller ISD stadium to cheer on the team on jersey night.

“Everyone in the stands had a lot of energy and it was fun standing out in the rain supporting the Dragons,” Brooklyn Crowe (12) said.

The Dragons (4-0) take on the Haltom Buffalos (1-3) in their homecoming game at Dragon Stadium on Sept. 22 at 7 p.m.

On Friday, 39 seniors were celebrated after being named National Merit Semifinalists. The students' parents were invited to campus by Principal Ryan Wilson as a surprise to make the moment even more special for them.

“I was so honored to be a National Merit Semifinalist,” Fé Lau (12) said. “My parents came and brought me some flowers. It was a nice surprise and made my day.”

According to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, semifinalists are the highest scorers in each of the 50 states and represent less than one percent of each state’s high school seniors. Students who qualify as Semifinalists based on their performance on the Preliminary SAT are the only program participants who have an opportunity to advance to the Finalist level and compete for National Merit Scholarships. Reagan Douglas (10) and Abby Lund (11) sell their Emerald Belle cards at the Carroll High School curriculum night. This Wednesday, Carroll High School hosted their annual curriculum night where the parents of Dragon students travel the halls trying to find their child’s classes.  The members of the varsity Emerald Belles helped the parents navigate their way through the halls and simultaneously sold their Belle cards.

“People can use these cards for discounts on places like Moxies, Chiloso or even on other things besides restaurants like Sanara,” Douglas (10) said.

While the CHS teachers were explaining their syllabus to the parents, the children of the Dragon teachers were being watched over by members of the CHS Student Council.

Carroll Senior High will hold their curriculum night on Sept. 13 at 5:30 p.m.

Today seniors received their free Class of 2024 “Final Countdown” t-shirt from the senior class council during passing periods. The shirt features a countdown from the first week of school to the May 24 graduation date on the back and were designed so that students could mark off the weeks as they pass.

“The senior shirt distribution was very successful,” senior class president Jope Iluyomade (12) said. “We ran out of sizes pretty quick and a lot of people came to collect their shirts, which we weren’t expecting. All the mediums are gone and we are almost out of larges and smalls.”

Last week, JV and varsity tennis had their matches against Timber Creek and Argyle, winning 17-2 and 16-12. Although many outdoor school activities were delayed because of the hot weather, tennis persevered in the 100+ degree weather. According to records, it was one of the hottest weeks of the year.

"Honestly I was hoping to play later in the day when it got cooler," Moksha Davaloor (12) said. "I think it's one of those things that you just have to know your limits and rely on the fact that we've played all summer and have built up a stamina, but it's definitely daunting to play in the heat. But it's just another variable that makes the sport more complex."

Next, the varsity will be at Keller on Sept. 7 and then take on Allen at home on Sept. 8 at 4:30 p.m. JV Green is at home against Keller on Sept. 7 at 4:30 p.m.

So much has been happening at Carroll Senior and Carroll High in the weeks leading up to Tuesday's first day of school. While fall sports and band were practicing, cheerleaders were painting signs for the players to run through on game day and upperclassmen endured the heat to paint their parking spots. Seniors woke up as early as 5 a.m. to drive to Dragon Stadium for Senior Sunrise before beginning their last first day of school.

“I’ve enjoyed going back to school because I see my friends and it’s good to get back into a routine," Sophia Wilwaco (12) said. "I’ve been used to waking up early for cross country practice during the summer which has helped me with school starting. It’s crazy how I’ve never seen some of the seniors in my classes before but I’ve loved meeting new people.”

Faculty and staff are in their final day of preparation before the 2023-24 school year begins for all Carroll ISD students tomorrow. Last Thursday, during their professional development week, teachers from across the district gathered at CSHS for convocation which featured performances by the Dragon Band, a speech by national debate champion Bailey Koh (12) and a backyard bbq lunch assisted by the BBQ Club and served in part by Superintendent Dr. Lane Ledbetter.

“BBQ club is here to help kick off the year,” Cami O’Neill (12) said. “We’ve got four cooks here and we’re feeding like 1,100 people. I love BBQ club, it’s a good time.”

On Friday, Carroll High held their annual orientation for incoming freshmen, renamed this year to Freshman Friendsie. The students were able to get to know each other and learn more about their new school by participating in rotations in small groups led by student council upperclassmen. The small group sessions included a club fair, Q&A with Green Jackets, safety reminders, learning the alma mater and fight song as well as a stop for snacks and drinks. Following the event, freshmen were able to walk their schedules and familiarize themselves with the campus.

"It was tons of fun because I got to meet a lot of new people and build relationships," Nehal Shafir said. "I also found a few clubs I'm interested in like Art Club and Key Club."

The first day for students is set for Aug. 15 on all Carroll ISD campuses.

The 740 graduates of the class of 2023 will begin the evening of graduation at their home campus before bussing to Dragon Stadium for the ceremony, so seating has to be coordinated at each location.

“It’s a big job,” Randall said. “Lots of logistics planning goes into a major event like graduation, but I really love getting to be part of this milestone for these students.”

Graduation ceremonies are set to begin at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night. Tickets are not required for the event and doors open at 6:30 p.m.

The seniors celebrated their final days as a class Tuesday at Circle R Ranch during the Senior Picnic. More than 550 seniors spent the day enjoying water slides, obstacle courses, sand volleyball and hayrides.

“This year, senior class council brought back the annual Powderpuff tournament,” senior class sponsor Mrs. Heather Pedigo said. “Eight teams competed for glory and team Ice Spice took home the golden football. Next up, graduation.”

Yearbooks were distributed today at CSHS and students took time to sign each others’ books before heading back to class or completing their senior checkout process.

“We are completely sold out for the fourth year in a row,” yearbook adviser Natalie Brown said. “The day was wild and we barely had time to stop and look around; we were so busy handing out books. It’s a great feeling to see people enjoying the book that my Dragon Media kids spent months and months working on. They should be incredibly proud. I know I am.”

The class of 2023 celebrated their senior prom in style on Saturday night at the Hyatt Regency DFW. The Vintage Vegas event included dinner and dancing as well as gaming tables where students could bet and win chips to cash in for raffle tickets on prizes from gift cards to AirPods and more.

“Prom was so much fun this year, and I sort of knew what to expect since I went as a Green Jacket last year, but I thought the theme was super cool,” Joey Brown (12) said. “My favorite part was definitely the casino where my group spent most of our time.”

Following the STAAR U.S. History EOC exam Tuesday morning, CSHS principal Ryan Wilson and AP Eddie Morman grilled burgers and hotdogs for the staff and students on campus. More than 1000 lunches were prepared and handed out by office staff following the test dismissal.

“All of my classes were relocated to the SAC or library today," Breanna Davenport (12) said. "Since I didn't have much to do, I helped serve hot dogs and hamburgers for the cookout. Mr. Wilson, Mr. Morman, and the rest of the staff did a great job putting the event together. It was also fun going to classes with Eliana to give out the leftovers."

The fine arts signing day took place last Wednesday. Seniors pursuing a major in a fine art signed with a variety of colleges including NYU, PACE University, and TCU. “I enjoyed it a lot,” senior Zander Griffin, who is attending The Tisch School at NYU for musical theatre said. “It was really nice. I feel like nationally fine arts aren’t really important I guess to schools. It was nice to have the whole little event because it felt like everyone here matters."

Students in Engineering Design Presentation class over at Carroll High School have officially begun their second-to-last projects of the school year. This project, a marble sorter, will be much more difficult than the last few designs because it requires much more planning ahead of time.

“We've been trying out different designs for the marble sorter but nothing has been working yet,” Joshua Landgraf (11) said. “My partner Braiden Callaway and I are trying out some new designs, and going through the motions. We’ll try weighing the marbles and then using an altered version of a robotic surgical arm we created for a previous project to separate the marbles into different containers. Hopefully everything works out this time.”

This year, StuCo adopted a local child, Nyla, from the Make-A-Wish Foundation and raised $15,000 for her to go to an animal camp at Blue Hills Ranch. Today, they threw a party to celebrate her wish being granted. Some of Nyla's favorite things include cupcakes, Chick-fil-A, and the Disney movie “Encanto.”

"We chose the color scheme of the rainbow for her party because her favorite color is the rainbow,” Lauren Sanders (11) said. "We did a welcome tunnel as she walked in, we had cupcake decorating, food, and everything that is her favorite. StuCo chose Nyla’s Wild Wish because she wants to go to Blue Hills Ranch which is a week-long camp full of animals so we adopted her and had multiple fundraisers." 📸 A. Patel

As the Taylor Swift concert approached, Asha Patel (10) decorates a cowboy hat with gems and rhinestones to wear to tonight’s show. Each word written on the hat represents one of the ten albums Taylor Swift has released in the last 16 years.

“When my mom told me she bought the tickets to the Eras Tour, I was really shocked,” Patel said, “For a while I didn’t think I was going to go but when she told me that we actually were, it didn’t even feel real.”

Taylor Swift will play three nights at AT&T stadium to fully sold-out crowds this weekend. There are expected to be more than 85,000 fans at each performance.

On Friday, CSHS hosted the annual spring pep rally and raised more than $1000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Student Council is collaborating with Make-A-Wish to help raise funds for Nyla, an 8-year-old girl who is battling leukemia. Nyla loves animals and her wish is to attend Blue Hills Ranch this summer. Funds raised by CSHS will help grant that wish and future wishes to kids in north Texas. Donations can be made directly to the CSHS Make-A-Wish Donation Page (linked in bio) or by participating in a spirit night fundraiser during Wish Week March 27-31. Spirit nights are set for Feed Store on March 27, Chiloso on March 28, Duffs on March 29, Crisp & Green on March 30 and Kincaid’s on March 31.

“My favorite part of this journey has been to see how many people and businesses have come together as a strong family community to support an 8-year-old girl for Make-A-Wish,” junior Sam Jeppson said. “It’s a powerful testament to charity and how we can all do our part to help someone because by doing that we help someone because by doing that we help ourselves become better people and a light to others to follow the example to pay it forward.”

During the pep rally there were performances by local band Redwall, Indoor Percussion, Emerald Belles, cheer and more.
