Since its world premiere at Locarno Film Festival 2024 (Special Jury Award Cine+ and Special Mention First Feature) the film has been screened and awarded in more than 50 festivals around the world including New Directors / New Films in New York, IFFR Rotterdam, Film Fest Gent, Chicago Int. “In biblical terms, the “Tree of Knowledge” symbolizes the beginning of free will and the ability to tell right from wrong. For Eugène Green, THE TREE OF KNOWLEDGE is also a metaphor for a spiritual awakening, a catalyst for internal renewal in the context of a widespread mass tourism boom in Europe.[…] With his signature style of theatrical performances and still frames, Eugène Green weaves a rich narrative that mixes dark fable with social satire, blurring the lines between past and present with references to Portuguese folklore and history, and hinting at timeless struggles of power and transformation through the use of magic realism and the supernatural. Through surreal imagery and absurd situations, Green evokes a profound spiritual and philosophical contemplation on Portugal’s current social crisis largely created by inequitable government policies and economic disparities.

The selection committee appointed by the Swiss Federal Office of Culture (FOC) has preselected by Denise Fernandes among the three titles.

On August 12, the FOC will announce its final decision on which film will be Switzerland’s official entry for the International Feature Film category of the 98th Academy Awards®️.

Statement from the selection committee:
“A poetic and deeply human debut, HANAMI by Denise Fernandes is a quiet yet powerful coming-of-age story with a touch of magic realism. Set on an island, the film explores themes of migration and identity, while standing out for its remarkable visual sensitivity and emotional precision.
