Community Code of Conduct

Unsettled: Journeys in Truth and Conciliation is an independent podcast dedicated to building bridges between Indigenous, settler, and newcomer peoples in Canada. This public page represents, develops, teaches, encourages, and supports a community of listeners and others who are similarly inclined. Others are not. Our Foundational Beliefs
• Canada needs to understand and

redress past and present wrongs and inequities perpetrated against its Indigenous peoples.
• These wrongs and inequities continue to harm Indigenous peoples, families, and communities.
• When we share knowledge, ideas, and stories about truth and conciliation, we create paths forward for us all. If you disagree with the above—and you’re not interested in modifying your opinion or learning more about what our podcast explores—this page is not for you. Do
• Treat everyone with respect—including commenters you disagree with.
• Expand upon posts or comments made by others.
• Express your like, love, displeasure, etc., by clicking on a Facebook reaction button.
• Ask relevant and genuine questions of each other and the administrators.
• Agree or disagree with points made by others and explain your position.
• Critique or review a posted episode or the podcast itself.
• Suggest further reading or other resources for the community.
• Share knowledge and stories.
• Like our page.
• Share our posts and tag friends.
• Adhere to Facebook’s Terms of Service and Community Standards, even those not specified here. Do Not
• Troll, bully, name call, or otherwise attack.
• Engage in hate speech, promote violence, or write anything obscene or illegal.
• Swear excessively. The occasional expletive is OK, but it’s better, we believe, to avoid swearing all together.
• Go on and on and on (i.e., insist on getting in the last word). When it’s clear a thread’s comments and responses are no longer productive, move on.
• Promote or link to sites, services, or products that contravene this Code of Conduct or Facebook’s Terms of Service.
• Spam the community to sell products. (See Promotional Consideration)

Grey Area
We accept that some generalizing about identifiable groups is inevitable in life. That’s especially true on pages like this one, because we actively distinguish between different peoples in Canada. However, when generalizations become destructive stereotypes, we draw the line. Corrective Actions of Administrators
Facebook does not allow us to turn off comments. But we can—and do—delete specific comments when they do not conform to our Code of Conduct. We can also block specific Facebook users from the page. We’ll do that if you become a serial offender or post a comment that’s particularly vile. What About Free Speech? We have the right to develop this platform in the spirit of the podcast it supports. Deciding what is and is not appropriate is included within that right. None of this is an attack on your right to say what you want. You can exercise free speech—elsewhere. Promotional Consideration
If you like, you can put appropriate links within the comment section of a specific post. However, a more effective route may be to message your link to us and suggest that we post it on the main feed. Click on the Messenger icon in the About section of the page. If we agree your link is right for our audience, we will promote it. News items, non-profit activities, and coming events are given priority. On rare occasions and at the administrators’ discretion, we may promote a product or for-profit service. The acceptance bar for these items, however, is especially high. Do not post these as comments—they will almost always be deleted. Final Notes
This page and this Code of Conduct are evolving things. Therefore, we reserve the right to change the code anytime and for any reason, without notice. We realize that much of this code requires interpretation, so we also reserve the right to do exactly that: interpret. In applying this code, we will do our best to be consistent and fair.

In S4 E2 of Unsettled: Journeys in Truth and Conciliation, Ramona Big Head of Kainai Nation in Alberta speaks of the heartbreak and other impacts of fentanyl deaths in her family and community.
Ultimately, though, the ground-breaking educator in the Blackfoot community shares a message of hope.
"I'm such an optimist," Ramona says. "I honestly believe that this generation of kids. . .they could be the first generation of our people that absolutely, 100 per cent stay away from drugs or alcohol."
This podcast serves Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission and its 94 Calls to Action. Check out the Ramona Big Head conversation or any of the other episodes in our catalogue.

Part of Ramona Big Head's healing process was taking part in a charity run across Canada.

Mike Bern of Tobique First Nation in New Brunswick shares stories of song, career, life and culture, in S4 E3 of the podcast.
Veering away from the heavier soundscape of his past bands, Mike embarked on a solo career about five years ago with the release of the single First Mother.
Now he has two solo albums to his credit, including the release earlier this year of Ancestors.
"I'm always working on music," says Mike. "Everyday you wake up from a dream or just a walk in the woods or from talking to somebody—inspiration is all around us."
Listen now on Buzzsprout (below) or wherever you get your podcasts.

Mike Bern, who released the album Ancestors to wide acclaim this year, uses folk rock to tap into his First Nation culture and stories.

Rooted in her own story of domestic abuse, Kristi Lane Sinclair's album Super Blood Wolf Moon oozes strength, perseverance, pain, and vulnerability. The award-winning Haida-Cree singer-songwriter has released a searing, deeply personal, and profound collection of songs, at once driving and anthemic, wispy and gentle, angsty and orchestral.

"I didn't want to write this," says Kristi. "It was the last thing I wanted to do at that point, to share my story. But just going through it, I had this knowledge. I'm part of this secret club now. . .I just thought I'd extend that. If you know you know. They'll get what I'm talking about, and I'll not really help but just hang out and make someone feel not quite so alone."

Kristi Lane Sinclair taps into her Haida Gwaii culture in her new album, Super Blood Wolf Moon.

Murphy Brown plays a big role in our latest episode.

Murphy Bio Part 1: Raised roaming the alleys and dog parks of Toronto's Parkdale, the tough and tender Murphy Grace Brown sharpened her teeth collaborating with Kristi Lane Sinclair and facilitating Kristi's 2023 album Super Blood Wolf Moon.

"You called me to talk about my dog, right?"
Not exactly. But sure, we like dogs.

Murphy Bio Part 2: Murphy went on to cofound hip hop sensation Dog Dad Posse. Not content with modelling duties as Canada's fav poster pup, Murphy's true passion lies in being a full-time therapy pup. She puts in a lot of overtime.

Favourite bands? The Cranberries and Concrete Blonde. Favourite song on Kristi's latest album? End of the Rope.
