Yesterday was a shock and an inevitability, I never owned any of Sinéad’s music, I didn’t need to, her major works hit me instantly , her voice, her delivery, her tortured sincereity got through unchallenged on each listen whether on the radio or tv. Her eyes were pools of struggle, her vulnerability was for all to see unguarded, it was honest and open.
People often talk about “Punk”, yes Punk was carried by thrash songs, lip curling stage presence, 50’s biker jackets and pin badges and pseudo bo***ge Westwood inspired fashion. Occassionaly it was covered also by smart sassy lyrics spitting at unjust power and social issues. For me though Sinéads music was not that, her open vulnerabilty and fight against insane unjust deplorable acts was. She had a small frame but a big heart and did things almost all people were too scared to do, hold people of immense power to account.
This was a strong person in that regard, the strongest and through her struggles got justice through, which , obviously, would be too much for one soul, who was villified, to bear.
Thank you Sinéad, a true true punk in all the best ways.
