Hello listeners! We want to let you know that Episode 4, which was originally slated to appear this week, will not be published.

One of the foundations of our class is the belief that a person's story belongs to them, first and always. In this country, there is a long history of others speaking for and even silencing the stories of immigrants. With our podcast, we strive to amplify stories rather than co-opt them, and we are learning every day how to do better at this.

In this case, our narrator decided they were not comfortable sharing their story in a public venue, and we respect that decision without reservation. We would like to thank the narrator for their time and commitment to our project, and we will continue to honor both the stories and silences of the immigrants in our community.

Join us as we celebrate together the launch of season 2 of the Harrisonburg 360 Podcast. Over the course of the spring 2021 semester, twenty-five JMU students in Dr. Allison Fagan’s English 360 class have been working on a digital project that seeks to ethically elevate the stories of past and present immigrants living in the Shenandoah Valley community. This semester each episode focuses on stories of local business owners and how they have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. This event is an opportunity to have conversations and discussions as one community to showcase student work from this semester in hopes of expanding perceptions of what it means to be an immigrant in Harrisonburg. Join us for a panel discussion and Q&A about the project and this year's experience. Register at this link: https://jmu-edu.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0scO-ppjsiHNPObLL6Oq2vWVEmVp0KHORR

When people migrate to the United States they are often faced with tough decisions regarding assimilation, acclimation, acculturation, or a combination of all three. The episode "Ten Million Souls" shares these themes with Achy Obejas's short story, “We Came All the Way from Cuba So You Could Dress Like This?” which also tells the story of a young girl who migrated to the United States and faced battles of oppression and conflicts even with her own family.

Welcome to the home of the Harrisonburg 360 podcast!

This project is an attempt to capture and record narratives of immigrants living in the Harrisonburg community. Using past and present voices of Harrisonburg immigrants, students in our JMU English 360 class have collaborated to create a space focused on the importance of listening to each other’s voices.

Every person deserves a chance to share their story, and we, as a class, are privileged to share these stories with you in hopes of expanding perceptions of what it means to be an immigrant in Harrisonburg.

Harrisonburg 360. Real people. Real stories. One community.
