Continuing our "Meanwhile, elsewhere..." series... Here's team member Ken exploring Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, west of Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. Founded in 1383 (1927 BE), legend has it that the wat was built by King Nu Naone on the very mountaintop where a sacred white elephant he'd summoned, bearing a relic of the Buddha, fell down dead on its way to him.

Something a little different from us today! Here's team member Ken exploring the magical ruins of Sukhothai in central Thailand. The kingdom was founded in 1238 by Si Inthrathit and reached its zenith under Ram Khamhaeng the Great (r.1279-98) who's generally credited with establishing Theravada Buddhism as the region's official religion and single-handedly forging the Thai alphabet from a blend of Sanskrit, Khmer and other precursors! A truly enchanting site.

More from team member Abi, this time Micklegate Bar in York. Acting as the main entrance to the city of York from the south, the lower section dates to the 12th century and the top two storeys from the 14th!

For centuries the severed heads of rebels and traitors were displayed above the gate, famously including Sir Henry Pucey (Hotspur) in 1403 and Richard, Duke of York in 1460 (supposedly wearing a paper crown 👑)!

We're back!! After a long break, we're once again up and running! Here's team member Ken visiting the Church of St Laurence in Bradford--on-Avon today. Probably built shortly after 1001 when Æthelred Uræd granted the land to local nuns, it may have also served as a mortuary chapel for the body of Edward the Martyr (r.975-78) and is a very rare survival from the period. Anyway, look out for new episodes soon with some very special guests!!

🚨 New Episode Alert 🚨

THE WARS OF THE ROSES: Bastard Feudalism (Ep1).

The term bastard feudalism has been adopted as a label to distinguish a social structure different from its predecessor in the post‐Conquest period. In this episode of Teach Medieval, Abi is joined by Dr Gordon McKelvie of the University of Wi******er to discuss the term and the role that this social structure played in the Wars of the Roses.

On a recent trip to team member Abi came across the incredible tomb of Henry Percy, 4th Earl of Northumberland!
Percy had quite the career during the Wars of the Roses:
✋After being restored to his earldom in 1470, he paid homage to his Yorkist king by making no move to stop Edward IV after he landed at Ravenspur in 1471 following his exile to the Duchy of Burgundy!
🔋His power in the north continued to grow during Edward’s second reign, only really being rivalled by Richard, Duke of Gloucester who he seems to have a good relationship with
⚔️Yet Northumberland is infamous for not joining in at the Battle of Bosworth!
⚰️Northumberland was killed in April 1489 at South Kilvington by a mob protesting against taxes imposed by Henry VII.
