Had a couple awesome playtests over the weekend! Lots of changes to make but thanks to the advice of and my buddy Brian (who is not on IG lol), I have a good sense of the direction I need to head. Can’t wait for the next round of playtesting! If anyone is interested in playing my game (a worker placement game based on being in a band) hit me up and we can put something together! Now that we’re fully vaccinated, and I were finally able to have a proper date day! It was full of good beer, good games, and some much needed time out of the house. We played 7 Wonders Duel and she won (per usual) and 3’gamea of Biblios, of which I won two (woot woot!). Such a good feeling to start getting back to normal again! What games have you been playing this weekend?

Had a chance to play Band Builder by tonight on TTS!

Band Builder is a game of managing your actions against a time track while trying to keep playing better and better venues while also trying to gain as much skill, fame, fans, and money as possible.

It’s a smart, simple, strategic game that I can’t wait to see on game shelves everywhere and on my own table.

Matt and I originally connected on Facebook because we’re both making band games and I’m so stoked to see his game get to this point! It’s such a huge step to show your game to people outside of your family (a step I have not reached yet) and I was so honored to be included.

And honestly I can’t wait to play again. Seriously, stay on the lookout for this game from !

Just finished playing Sagrada! Such a beautiful game. I’m making an effort to get into lighter weight games and Sagrada just skyrocketed to the top of my favorite family games list. Very rules-light but tons of strategy. And my wife won by a single point. What’s your favorite family game?

Had the opportunity to finally play Horrified last night! I’m not the biggest fan of co-op games but this one was a lot of fun. I really liked each monster’s unique puzzle and abilities that really added to the tension and feel of the game. We played against Dracula, The Mummy, and The Creature From the Black Lagoon and we won on the very last possible turn. I might have to pick this game up for myself at some point. What’s your favorite co-op game?

We played Brass Birmingham yesterday! One of the heaviest games I’ve played in a while for sure. All the different things you need to balance and plan for makes for a real brain burner but even so, this game immediately jumped into my top 3. What are some of your favorite heavy board games?

We had another playtest of our worker placement game! I got a lot of good notes and everyone said it was more fun than the last iteration, so that’s good news, but I’m honestly pretty discouraged. The balance and pacing is totally off and I’m not entirely sure yet what needs to be done to fix it. Just gotta keep at it. What are some things those of you who design games do when you’re frustrated with your game?

The newest iteration of the prototype is complete! The dry erase game board is amazing and easily my new favorite prototyping tool. Along with 200+ cards, lots of meeples and cubes, and a few bits borrowed from other games, we’re ready for another round of playtesting this still unnamed worker placement game! What are some of your must-have prototyping tools?

Euphoria! This was our second try with this game and I’m still not convinced I’ve got the hang of it. I know the rules but I feel like I’m not playing optimally. It took us almost 2 hours to finish the game and I don’t think it should have. Granted the beginning is real slow going but at some point, I feel like I should have been doing a little better. I’m gonna have to spend more time with this game to get the hang of the strategy.

The kid and I learned Dice Throne today and we had such a great time! He played Samurai, I played Gunslinger, and we killed each other at the same time. We have six other characters to try and I can’t wait to get into them! Who’s your favorite Dice Throne character?

Tried out some Dice Forge today and what a cool idea this game is! I love the components (even though the die faces are a little tough to remove), the art is fantastic, and it’s a quick and easy game that I can play with my kid... who beat me by one point. Definitely glad I picked this one up! What are some other good dice games?

Finally got the wife to play Architects of the West Kingdom and I only beat her by 2 points. I was very impressed with her first play. Don’t tell her but she’s turning into quite the gamer and I’m incredibly happy about it.

Finally convinced my wife to play Castles of Burgundy last night and she ended up beating me by 6 points! I made a mistake in the last phase that probably cost me the game. Oh well. She won so that probably helped convince her that it’s a good game lol

Our first game of My Little Scythe with the Pie In The Sky expansion and we love the airship and new factions! Surprise, the kid won again. I have no idea how he keeps beating us.

Tried out Hive today and that’s a pretty fun little game. Nice and quick, a good amount of strategic depth, and the pieces themselves are awesome. Big and heavy, I love them. Bonus points for being the very first game that my wife saw, was interested in, and purchased all totally independent of me. I’ll turn her into a gamer yet.

I was so close to winning solo Nemesis! My objective was to send the signal and let the ship be destroyed. I sent the signal, disabled one engine (the other was already damaged) and unlocked the escape pod in section A but an event card launched it before I could get there! I was on the other side of the ship and had to fight through tons of intruders to find the section B escape pod but I got there. On the last turn of the game, I tried to enter the escape pod but failed my noise roll and then the ship jumped to hyperspace and I died. Oh well.

We played our first ever game of Agricola tonight and it was a blast. I won 44-35 which kind of makes me think we may have done something wrong but I dunno. My wife also said it’s way more fun than it seemed at first, so that’s also a plus. Worker placement is definitely climbing the ladder of my favorite mechanics. What are the best worker placement games?

The kid and I introduced my dad to Small World of Warcraft and My Little Scythe today. Im a big fan of both of these games and it’s a huge plus that the kid loves them too. We’ve played My Little Scythe five times now and the kid has won four of those games (including today). We don’t let him win. He just gets it. His ability to strategize amazes me. He also helped teach the games to my dad and he did a really good job there too. I’m so proud of him.

I picked up Race For The Galaxy yesterday and we gave it shot tonight. It’s a pretty intricate game with all the different icons and card interactions but a very rewarding experience nonetheless. What are some other good tableau building games?

Some Tiny Towns for family time! The kid hasn’t quite gotten the hang of the space management but he still loves the game. I see this one getting played a lot in the future.

Played Carcassonne and Architects of the West Kingdom last night and yep, they’re still two of my favorite games. Carcassonne was what ultimately hooked my brother and his spouse on board games so I think we just added two more people to our wonderful hobby. I can’t wait to watch their collection and enjoyment of it grow with time.

New Years Eve game of Rap Godz. I never win this game and it is incredibly frustrating. But it’s a fun game so it’s all good.

Introduced the kid to My Little Scythe today and, with very little help, he beat me! I’m so proud of him! He also told me it’s his new favorite board game but that may just be because he won 🤣 What are some other really good kids games?

Four player Nemesis! It only took us about four hours and everyone lost. Such a great game though and I can’t wait to play it again.

Just played my first game of Nemesis and woah. What a game. I played solo so I could get the hang of the rules and stuff but it was still a ton of fun! Super tense, thematic, and really interesting mechanics. I don’t think it will come as a surprise to anyone that I died pretty quickly.

Had another playtest of the new game we’re working on last night! It’s getting better but still needs plenty of work. The full playtime was about 2.5 hours and the game is actually fun, so that was a really good feeling. Lots of super constructive criticism and great ideas from everyone at the table and I can’t wait to keep working on it!

Christmas Fallout! I wish this game had a better win condition but I’ll play it anyway because I love all things Fallout. What are some other good video game to board game adaptations?

Picked up Tiny Epic Zombies the other day and gave the solo mode a try just now. Even though I lost, this game is a blast and pretty incredible that they fit so much game in such a small box. I’d highly recommend it if you’re into the whole zombie thing. What are some other good Tiny Epic games?

Played some Architects of the West Kingdom today and I love this game! Worker placement is definitely one of my favorite mechanics and I learned a lot about my own worker placement game from playing this. Oh, I ended up winning 46-40. What’s your favorite worker placement game?

It’s been a while since we’ve been able to play a game, life is still weird. But it felt so good to sit down as a family and try out King of Tokyo! This is such a cool game that I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to play. Oh, the wife also stole the win out from under me! What are some other good dice games? 🎲

Playtest Round 2: still impossible to get points so it’s back to the drawing board! The game has good bones (I may even argue great) but the beginning is so slow that we gave up after about 90 minutes. Just gotta keep at it, I guess.
