Hello my friends, it has been a bit since we posted here. Have to apologize, been out sick. But all is getting better.
There is a question I have to ask first; Do you know when Black History Month started? Answer may surprise you, It was in 1926!
I want to post some history, like I have been doing, but this time, because it is Black History Month, I want to cover some people very much worth talking about. Some very famous African American people and maybe some from other countries around the world. Attached is a list of ten most famous blacks known around the world. You should look at them in the article. Below, though, I will be talking about some not mentioned in the article. I do have to admit though that two of the people mentioned in the article are well known all around the world just as much now as before. Martin Luther King Jr. and Michael Jackson.
Ok, here we go. I do have to foreworn you that this is a little long, but very informative. Will try to give a short description of each one. Bare with me, they all need honorable mentioned here. First off we have to mention the Tuskegee Airman who were the first Black Military Aviators in the US Army Air Corps, which was the precursor of the US Air Force. They flew over 15,000 sorties during WW II. Shot down 12 German fighters in two days. They shot down and destroyed 36 in the air and 237 on the ground. The aviators received 150 Distinguished Flying Crosses. There were 66 Tuskegee-trained-aviators also shot down and killed. There were also 32 more shot down and taken as POW's. I believe there are still 10 members left of the 1000 trained.
The second is another group of famous but not so famous group of men. The Negro Baseball Teams. First we have to look at when the first all black team was formed. This really should be before the Airman as it happened before them, but all is well. The history of an all black team was formed after the Civil War ended in 1865. That was before the Tuskegee Airman's time. While baseballs popularity was increasing, the African-Americans expressed interest in playing also. The National Association of Amateur Baseball players rejected them in 1867 and again in 1876. But then in 1920 Rube Foster launched the Negro National League. Which was active from 1920 till 1940. The league enjoyed several periods of success before completely folding in 1960s. Black teams were actually trying to be formed as early back as 1855. When several of the members tried to get on the all white teams, it made racial tension and the teams started to disengage. Although teams had a few good years (they held a Popular Negro World Series from 1924 through 1927) most of them disbanded by the peak of the Great Depression. The Negro National League was officially disbanded in 1948. The Negro American League barely made it through the 1950s. The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum opened in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1990.
Now this brings me to another famous player that made history during this time. One of the players of the Negro Team, Jackie Robinson! He broke Major Leagues Baseball infamous "color barrier" when he started at first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947. Jackie was 28 when he started playing for them, he played for 10 years. His number on his jersey was 42. As of this date there are two things that has come from this and will be in the history book or at least it should be. This is that all the teams across the US have officially retired that number forever. That was in 1997. The second thing is that the day Jackie Robinson stepped onto the field has become a national "Jackie Robinson Day" throughout the MLB franchises observe this day. Jackie Robinson was born on January 31, 1919, in Cairo, Georgia to "Sharecroppers". He was the youngest of 5. His oldest brother won a silver medal for track and field at Berlin in the Olympics in 1936. That inspired him to be in the athletics field. In high school he received a letter in four sports; baseball, basketball, football, and track. He did the same thing in college. He won the NCAA long jump championship in 1940. He was drafted in the Army in 1942 which he spent 2 years. Never seen any battle though. His overall batting average was .311, but had several years upwards of .387 and .349. He became the first Black player to win the National League Most Valuable Player Award in 1949. He led the league in batting average of .342, with achieving a career-high 124 RBI. He was an All Star every year from 1949 to 1954. He led the team to a win in the World Series championship over their rivals the New York Yankees in 1956. That is when he decided to retire just before the next year the team moved to Los Angeles. Jackie also had several great quotes he was known for. I want to mention a couple; "I'm not concerned with your liking or disliking me; all I ask is that you treat me as a human being", "There is not an American in this country free until everyone of us is free", "As I write these words now I cannot stand and sing the National Anthem. I have learned that I remain a Black in a white world". Robinson died in 1972 of a heart disease and diabetes at the age of 53 from an actual heart attack.
Another point of history in baseball for Negros. Do you know when the first team was formed? Then believe it or not, it is also known as the longest black team formed in history. A man named Johnn Pierce, known as "Red Pierce" was known as a bootlegger numbers man when he funded the team. It was called the "Miami Giants", of course in Miami. Even though they never became members of the Organized Negro Leagues. The team later was named "The Miami Clowns".
Bill Robinson, born Luther Robinson, born May 25, 1878 and died November 25, 1949. He was 71. He was one of the best tap dancers in history. His nick name was "Mr. Bojangles". Became a name in the late 19th century.
William "Smokey" Robinson Jr. American Singer, songwriter, producer, and record executive. Smokey has written more than 4,000 songs. Here is a bit of information you may not know, he wrote the song "My Girl" and gave it to the Temptations. Of course it became one of their top hit singles. But Smokey says he has no regrets giving it to them. He was born on February 19, 1940, he is celebrating his 82nd birthday today.
WOW, here is another famous Robinson. Known also as Bill Robinson, born as William Henry Robinson Jr. He was an American Professional Major League Baseball player from 1966 to 1983. He was born June 26, 1943 and died July 29, 2007. He was a right-handed player. More known as an outfielder but he also played on the 1st and 3rd bases.

Whitney Houston, born August 9, 1963 and died February 11, 2012. Ten years ago! She was an icon with her voice. She of course was a singer but also an actress. It is said that she died of an accidental drowning, but we really know the truth. She was a Superstar Powerhouse singer who had seven number one singles in a row. She also had three Diamond Platinum Albums. But this just scratches the surface of her accomplishments and achievements. One of her best performances in the movies was "Body Guard".
Aretha Franklin, also born on March 26th but in 1942. She died on August 16, 2018. She too was a famous American Singer and Songwriter. Aretha is known as the Undisputed "Queen of Soul", her gospel-tinged R&B displayed one of the greatest voices in record history. She died of Pancreatic neuroendocrine cancer.
Richard Roundtree, born July 9, 1942, soon to be 80 years old. Still lives in California. He is an actor and a former model. He is also my significant others second cousin. We see him sometimes at large family reunions. Once in Vegas. I was also in a movie with him in Korea for two weeks along with Ben Gazzara, Annett Funicello, Sir Laurence Olivier (He was General Patton). The movie was called "Oh Inchon", but it never was really got out there. Rountree is noted to be "the first black action hero", for his portrayal of a private detective, John Shaft, in the 1971 film "Shaft". He also stared in the four sequels that aired from 1972 through 2019. He attended Southern Illinois University which he had a football scholarship.
A famous duo in the tennis market are the Williams sisters; Venus and Serena. Both famous for playing doubles matches but also famous in their own right with singles matches. Especially when they had to compete against each other for a title. That was a great show. Serena is still going strong even after the birth of her child. The Williams sisters were coached by their father and mother who both are/were tennis coaches. Venus Williams is a seven-time Grand Slam title winner, where as Serena is a twenty-three-time Grand Slam title winner. Fathers name is Richard Williams and the mothers name is Oracene Price.
You also have to recognize a very powerful influence of the military force and political force. General Colin Luther Powell who not only was a military icon, but was the first African American to hold the title of Chairman of The Joints Chief of Staff under George H.W. Bush, then he was also the first African American Secretary of State under George W. Bush. Powell indorsed Obama for President. He received the "Presidential Medal of Freedom", twice! He was born April 5, 1937 and died October 18, 2021. He died of complications from COVID-19. He was fully vaccinated. Powell had multiple myeloma, a cancer of plasma cells that suppresses the body's immune system response. He also had Parkinson's. His wife, Alma Vivian, tested positive, it was not that severe so she was sent home. She is an American Audiologist. She is now 84 years old. Powell's widespread popular appeal and stature made him one of the "Most prominent and successful Black Americans" in public history.
